ECHOES / SUMMER 2002 3

Dear Friends,

As I write to you today we have just returned from theSouthern Baptist Convention meeting in St. Louis.

Each time that I get the chance to visit with our friends and alumni I am remind-ed of why we are in operation, and I am delighted to see the difference that isbeing made around the world by our graduates. As our new graduates leave thecampus I am convinced that they will continue to make a world changing differ-ence.

This has been an eventful time in the life of the college. We have seen the end ofsome segments of our history and the beginning of others. Recently we saidgoodbye to our longtime president, Dr. Jimmy Southerland. This man did muchto build the college that we have today. He is greatly missed, but we know thatwe will have a great reunion in the future. Another goodbye came in the form ofthe retirement of Dr. Wiley Richards. In his 34 years teaching at the college thisman had a profound impact on the lives of students and the life of the institution. We are glad that Dr. and Mrs. Richards are continuing to live in Graceville.

I hope that the mission trip to West Virginia that you will see in these pages is thebeginning of an ongoing relationship with that convention. Prior to coming to thecollege I had the privilege of serving in that great mission state as their ExecutiveDirector. Mission service continues as a strategic emphasis of the college. Thishas been seen in the commissioning service recently held in chapel, the studentsand faculty who are currently serving in Brazil, service by other students in sev-eral other countries this summer, and the upcoming commissioning of some ofour alumni for international service. Praise the Lord for the mission fervor on thiscampus!

I am so grateful for the leadership of individuals who come to lead in our chapelservices and special conferences. Drs. Timothy George and Bobby Welchinspired us to further service in an increasingly complex world.

The College Square Apartments are finally under construction after eight years ofplanning and waiting. We are looking forward to this much needed housing in ourcommunity.

There is much talk of Homeland Security. We must thank God for this great coun-try and stand for it. However, the great news is that we have a homeland in heav-en that is secure in the hands of the King of Kings. Thanks be unto God for Hisgreat blessings! Let's keep telling the good news.

God Bless You,

From The PresidentKeep Telling

Each year, summerstudent missionar-ies are recognized

in a service held by BCF'sBaptist CollegiateMinistries (BCM).This year's ceremo-ny was unfor-gettable.

The commis-sioning service fortwenty-four BCFstudents, all ofwhom willserve on mis-sion trips thissummer, washeld April 16,2002 in theR.G. LeeChapel. Hymnalsin hand, the con-gregation sang acontemporary ver-sion of "Nothing butthe Blood," led by theBCM praise band.

Praise band leader, ShaunBraley challenged the studentsgathered, "Are you truly worship-ping God . . .when you go to class . . .when you help other people?" As thepraise and worship came to a close, theband laid down their instruments to leadthe time-honored hymn "AmazingGrace" acappela.

Sophomore David Timms shared hisamazing testimony of how God broughthim from his home in Zimbabwe,

through his career in the British SAS andvarious side jobs, to BCF. David toldseveral amazing stories of God's work inhis homeland, his missionary in-laws,and friends.

He encouraged all, "There is some-one out

there wait-ing for you. I don't know who it is orwhere, but they're waiting for you."Then he urged the students to persevereand rely on God's power despite theadversity they will face.

The service closed with commission-

ing prayer as each group of missionariescame forward one at a time. The studentsgathered laid hands and lifted them up inprayer.

A reception followed and a cake wascut in dedication to the twenty-four rec-ognized student missionaries. Everyonemunched on finger-foods while BCM

Director Crystal Kepler presented giftbibles to each of the missionary

students.Whether traveling to

Brazil, Romania, or serv-ing in stateside mis-

"Faith is far broader than just evan-gelism," Welch clarified, "it is a strate-gy and process wherein a localchurch can crystallize the ministrytask." Suggesting the visualization ofa box holding many items, heexplained that the FAITH strategy islike a box holding the varied compo-nents of evangelism, assimilation, dis-cipleship and ministry.

Welch presented his vision to aclassroom of evangelism students atthe college March 12, citing eight prin-ciples for effective church ministry.

The first principle, he said, is thatchurch leadership must understandthe difference between "churchgrowth" and "growing the church."According to Welch, "church growth"is often considered the art of "how to

fill a building" rather than what hesays is a more appropriate approachof "growing the church." To grow achurch he states one must take thepeople in the church and invest intheir lives. As a result they will beequipped to reach others for Christwherever life may lead them.

Second, church leadership mustlearn the secret of a balanced NewTestament ministry that Welch statesis a mixture of evangelism and disci-pleship. However, he said that ineffort to accomplish this balance, "youmust always favor evangelism."

Welch explained that as a whole, people tend to favor discipleshipbecause it involves people they knowand with whom they share relation-ship. In effort to offset this natural ten-dency to lean heavy to discipleship, extra emphasis must always beplaced on evangelism. He said a pas-tor can favor evangelism by simplyproviding leadership and effectivetraining and by "teaching people tolove fishing and not just catching."

Vision for FAITH ExpandsVision for FAITH ExpandsAUTHOR SAYS PROGRAM IS MORE THANEVANGELISM BY HEATHER STEWART

The creator of the FAITH Sunday school evangelism strategytold a group of students at the Baptist College of Florida that hisvision for FAITH is more than a model for effective church ministry.

Bobby H. Welch, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Daytona,Fla., authored the first written version of the FAITH Sunday schoolevangelism strategy in 1998. Since that time more than 7,500churches and pastors have been trained through FAITH clinics allover the country, resulting in over a quarter of a million total par-ticipants.

RevivalRevivalRevival

It might not look like a typicalrevival, but the message of Christwas presented strongly through theLuau theme incorporated into thechildren’s revival.

Twelve BCF students made the 14hour trip to Charleston, West VirginiaApril 24 - 29 to lead a children’s revivalat North Charleston Baptist Church.Upon arrival, the group transformed theyouth room into a fun-filled beach scenecomplete with colored tarps to look likewater, sand and grass. Mats were con-structed for the children to decorate andsit on while the walls were covered withvarious types of marine life.

A boat constructed of cardboardprovided the central prop for vari-ous Bible stories including“Jonah and the Whale,” “NoahBuilds the Ark,” “JesusCalms the Storm,”and more.

With theroom now a vir-tual Hawaiianluau alive withcolor, the groupwas ready for their firstnight of ministry. The Jesusand Me (JAM) Team beganeach night in the adult

revival where they presented a chal-lenging drama and testimony.

Back in the children’s revivalother students started each

evening with a fun icebreak-er game followed by songsled by K.D. Tew and JedMarczewski. The BCFstudents turned each

night’s lesson into a drama, making the learning experi-

ence more memorable for thechildren. Following the lesson,Tasha Bishop taught a craft

that reinforced what theyhad just seen.

Althoughparticipantssay theirgreatest chal-lenge was planningactivities for 20 chil-dren in adiverse agegroup rang-ing from fourto twelve years old, their efforts provedworthwhile as two children made profes-sions of faith. “The trip was long and wedid a lot of hard work,” said BCM presi-dent Crystal Kepler, “However, it wasworth it just to see two children come toknow Christ.”

Sherry Jicka, wife of North CharlestonBaptist Church’s pastor, says the effectsof the revival are still evident in their chil-dren, “I can’t begin to tell you the differ-ence in our children. In Sunday Schoolthey have been excited about praying, andthey pray sincerely with a newfound con-fidence.” “Your ministry was a blessingto our children and even more now to usolder folk,” she continues.

In addition to the children’s revival, the students assisted with a free car washand witnessing to publicize the revival.Signs were made to advertise the free carwash and free food. While some washedcars, other students shared God withthose who stopped. The students said itwas gratifying to be able to share God’slove not only in word, but also in action.

“It was a great experience for the stu-dents to take what they have learned inthe classroom and use it in a hands-onmission environment,” commentedDirector of Student Services Greg Ford, who accompanied the students on theWest Virginia trip. “I was proud of the jobthat they did.”

tidbitsHappeningwhat’s

on campus?

Is the father ofJesus the God ofMuhammad?

Dr. Timothy George presented two lec-tures on this current hot topic during theannual Powell Lectures held April 22-23.George serves as dean of the BeesonDivinity School, Samford University locat-ed in Birmingham, Alabama. During hislectures he pointed out fundamental differ-ences in the teachings of Christianity andIslam.

Underconstruction

Local dignitaries joined BCFPresident Dr. Thomas A. Kinchenalong with Joe and Phillip Napier ofNapier, Inc. in an April 2 ground-breaking for the College SquareApartments. The 32 unit multi fami-ly facility will be located just east ofHeritage Village on the BCF campus.

Happening

Third, he expressed the impor-tance that church leaders "don't sayno for their people." In short, Welchencouraged pastors to give their con-gregation a chance by not arbitrarilydeciding what they will not do withouteven asking them. "Let [the congrega-tion] feel a part of leadership and be apart of breaking the trail," he implored.

The fourth principle, Welchexplained, is that leaders must lead."Leaders should inspire, excite, andmobilize," he said. Emphasizing thatthere is a purpose for managers whooften get caught in the details of a sit-uation, he emphasized that leadersshould not try to be managers caughtin the details, but always see bigger

and better.Fifth, he conveyed that churches

must learn to demonstrate the differ-ence between passion and compas-sion. To get excited about the mes-sage of Christ is passion, while leav-ing the doors of the church and doingsomething about it takes compassion.

The sixth principle explains thatchurches must learn to develop "forcemultipliers." Citing II Timothy 2:2,Welch said this simply means to takesomething known and tell it to some-one who needs to know it with fullexpectation that they will tell someoneelse. The process thereby creates achain that will reach further than anyone individual ever could on their

own. "FAITH is to take the forceyou have in your church and explodeit," Welch explained. Expanding onthis principle, he stated the seventhprinciple is to encourage Christians tobecome dangerous by pouring theirlives into others around them.

For the eighth principle Welch drewfrom his military experience statingthat pastors must "lead like a warrior."

"Jesus did not come to be minis-tered unto, but to minister others," heexplained. It should be every person'sgoal to choose sacrifice, self-denialand suffering all for the purpose ofaccomplishing the mission for whichthey were sent. "Find the load and getunder it."
