“As 5.5 million 16- to 24-year olds in America are not working or in school, think about the urgency we face and the power in this room to do something about it.” BLAIR TAYLOR, CEO, My Brother’s Keeper Alliance

“The best corporations are those that can see themselves as part of the world’s problem-solving ecosystem.” DARREN WALKER, President, Ford Foundation

“We look for ideas from our entire business, as we want to make sure we are inclusive and the entire NBA family is a part of our work in the community.” TODD JACOBSON, Senior VP, Social Responsibility, National Basketball Association

“CECP is heartened by the right-sizing of measurement to focus on outcomes of long-term programs. Companies increased the rate of measurement of at least one program--87% in 2015-- while the percent that measured impact on all programs decreased “ CARMEN PEREZ, Director, Evaluation and Data Insights, CECP

“The new social calculus rests on ethical and positive uses of data. As corporate actors your roles and institutions will be tasked with making data or data analysis available as a resource for good.” LUCY BERNHOLZ, Senior Research Scholar, Stanford University

“We’ve proven a direct linkage between purpose and performance; the purpose-oriented employees of a partner company outperformed their colleagues by every measure including 30% higher rated performance.” ARTHUR WOODS, Co-Founder, Imperative

“Employee engagement is the new CSR; unless and until you do right by your employees, you cannot be looked upon as an authentic purpose-driven, values-based company.” BOB KNOTT, Global Chair, Business + Social Purpose, Edelman

“Don’t underestimate that even CEOs who ‘get it’ need the confidence to ignore the voices screaming in their ears that they need to focus on short-term profitability and not the long term.” JOHN VEIHMEYER, Chairman, KPMG International

“Consumer brands that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability outperform those that do not.” CAROL GSTALDER, Leader, Consumer Insights North America, Nielsen

Investors: Companies shared information on societal commitments with new stakeholders in 2015 as an indicator of business strength; 56% of companies reported environmental, social, and governance (ESG) information to investors or the company’s investor relations department.

Elevation of the Role: As companies saw the bottom-line benefits from community involvement efforts, those teams expanded. The number of full-time team employees rose 3% from 2013 to 2015, while total number of employees dropped 2%, demonstrating resiliency.

Measurement: Measuring outcomes became a more widespread practice. Demonstrating impact and transparency is critical for companies, and as such 87% of companies measured social outcomes and/or impacts of at least one grant in 2015, up from 79% in 2013. Most commonly, they focused outcomes measurement on strategic programs.

As the field evolves, so does CECP’s research. The Good BEYOND Giving pilot is underway, for which we invite you to share your company’s examples of leveraging more of the firm for societal benefit. The objective of the research is to test new categories and definitions of these innovations to capture, report, and benchmark on more activities that make companies a force for good. Contact Laura Galindo for more information, [email protected].

Congratulations to the 2016 Charles H. Moore Award honoree Lance Chrisman, Executive Director, Anthem Foundation. “Social responsibility is everyone’s responsibility.” These are the words Lance Chrisman is best known for among everyone he engages with – whether that is the CEO and Board of Directors, peers, nonprofit partners, or the company’s 47,500 associates. Under Lance’s direction, the Anthem Foundation has donated more than $160 million to create a healthier generation of Americans.
