The SIG Notes are a joint document produced and edited by both ALPA and Company SIG Representatives. SIG PROCESS RECAP: Groundhog Day is in February. February was very similar to January for targets and number of disputed pairings. Average bid line guarantees (BLG) remain high in almost all bid packs. Summary of the Build: Different challenges arise with mid-range to higher targets. Minimum days off, days off pattern, and the adhering to the 13 CH spread between high and low line values are the limiting factors building to a higher line guarantee. Some of the bid-packs still need smaller pieces (pairings) to facilitate better line construction. But overall, most of the bid-packs went together with minimal complications. Disputed Pairing Process: A trend of having fewer trips discussed during the disputed pairing process continued in the February bid-packs. The issues we focused on were multiple international duty periods without a reset. The 777 had a new sequence the transited multiple arenas (Middle East, Asia, Europe) with a single reset. These pairings start in one direction (east or west) operates three quarters around the globe, then reverses direction (Slingshot). Typically, we find reversing direction like this can be difficult.

Errors. Last month, one pairing number on the dispute list was transposed. Previous months, we have copied the wrong date of a dispute. A vigilant crew member last month alerted the SIG and we fixed the error within minutes of publishing. Publishing the SIG Notes in six days is not an easy task. There are currently twelve separate inputs. The publication has a half a dozen people editing on a rigid timeline. Finally, they are formatted and distributed. We believe it is important to publish prior to the bids closing. More pilots read the SIG Notes when published on time. Disputes: None PSIT Notes: February is a 4-week bid month. We were able to build 23 lines at an average of 71:19. Our first 75/76 crews will begin training mid February. Flight schedules for the Airbus remain the same for now. There are a number of long night hub turns to/ from ICN and KUL surrounding the min MNL overnight. We have identified it as a difficult sequence. Your feedback is requested on any operational or fatigue issues you experience. We were unable to secure any European flying this month. Flight 5017 PVG-CAN delays due to Chinese ATC/ military ops have continued since July. We have been informed that the company (and other airlines) are trying to improve the situation but we are not aware of an imminent solution. We have voiced our concerns about this flight hub turning, since the average delay is approximately two hours, and eliminates the opportunity for a rest on the hub turn.

[Hong Kong A300 Continued] GT crews are experiencing longer than normal delays clearing customs at the border, due to increased tourists during this time of the year. **Heads up** Chinese New Year is Feb 19. The worlds largest human migration, officially known as The Spring Festival travel season/Chunyun runs from Feb 4 –Mar 16. There will be extremely high traffic loads during this period. Plan ahead, caution while deviating, and book your transportation tickets early. I would like to thank the pilots that have taken time to file a scheduling PIREP. PSIT Notes: February is a four-week month with no major holidays. Flower flights for Valentines Day had an effect on the flying schedule and build for the second week. Buddy bidders beware! The requested BLG for the Captains was 78 and the First Officers was 76. With the high BLG, you will find extra flying on most lines to bring them up to this level. The lines will have some different pairings to accommodate this split in the BLG.

PSIT Notes: The Company requested a build target of 72+00 hours. The build patterns were such that the MUC trips were used over the lines resulting in fewer reasonably pure MUC lines. With this number of credit hours, we normally are only able to build 22 lines. This month, we built 23 lines. That means that fewer trips were left in open time. Additionally, we intentionally kept the week after the weeklong MAN/BSL pairings free from duty. Though the construction in BHX is scheduled to be complete on 07Feb15, the Company continued to build BSL as the hook city for MAN. The MAN/BSL pairings are built reflecting the 07Feb15 completion date but the pairing may be revised if BHX construction is not complete on schedule. Last year’s runway work in BHX went several weeks beyond the projected completion date.

[Europe B757 Continued] For those pilots with R-Days, remember that you are due a contractually compliant 1 in 10 in base. Unlike a 1 in 7, which can take place in the field, this is required to be in base unless waived for phase-in conflict. Please see 12.C.1.c for details. PSIT Notes: Captain Bid Lines Note: The normal “sorting” of the lines was changed in a clerical error to a sort by ascending line credit hour value instead of the normal groupings you are accustomed to seeing. Please accept our apology if this changes your bid back review/bid input strategy. Expect a return to the normal bid line sorting in March. The Captain and First Officer lines are not matched in number and in many cases the trips vary on similar lines due to the large split in average BLG targets requested by the Company, thus First Officers are cautioned that attempting to bid a particular Captains line will require more due diligence Let us begin by thanking two people who spend countless hours reviewing our pairings for quality and contractual compliance. [Memphis 757 Continued] February is a 4-week month with some extra Valentine’s Week flower flights affecting week 2 schedules in some cases. Overall our cities remain stable and some of the “peak” flying has remained in the bid pack. The aircraft routings in and out of EWR and AFW are in many cases “one way” and continue to present challenges in city purity, regional DH problems and in some cases day/night duty swaps. We are asking feedback on any of these pairings that tour America through EWR/AFW as we attempt to find solutions that meet both quality of life concerns managed with crew alertness issues. There are a few pairings (Trips 205/2FEB, 89/8FEB and 182/8FEB) that were held out of lines that will be revised and then made available for the View/Add and/or the secondary line processes. Lastly we continue to dispute the MEM-BFM-QRO critical duty sequence as the PSIT has a number of concerns on this pairing design. Concerns include: 1) Flying the second leg out of a critical duty into a foreign location with high CFIT risk, 2) No radar and a NON-ILS approach, and 3) A customs bag drag into a very short layover. We ask for POR’s and SIG PIREPS and, if required, a Fatigue report if you experience issues on this or any pairing you operate (you don’t have to make a “Fatigue Call” in order to file a fatigue report).

SGF is going back to the 757 bidpack, and BFM (day and night) has come over to the 767 to act as short hook cities for the longer west-coast flights that create 30-in-7 issues (GEG, LAS). 13/14FEB - Disputed for the multiple circadian disruptions and only one reset. This reset does not mitigate the fatigue risks possible throughout the pairing. 72/03FEB, /17FEB - These two occurrences are disputed for the multiple circadian disruptions after the reset. The constant shifting of your body clock and increasing duty times could pose a fatigue risk. PSIT Notes: There is not much materially different for FEB 2015 than last month. Credit hours for the month remained steady and pairing design was similar. We have two disputes this month operating 3 times.

[Anchorage MD-11 Continued] Pairing 29 and pairing 75 will be revised to reflect some changes we requested. The resultant fixes will be available in open time and for the view/add window. We have had some domestic style pairings in the last few months. These are the SEA-OAK turns. This month we also got some PDX-OAK turns on the night side. I attempted to put these pairings together in the bidpack to have some consistency. There are three lines of these scattered within the bidpack. Out sort system did not allow for them to be placed next to each other.

PSIT Notes: February is a 4-week bid month with Valentine’s Day occurring on the second Saturday of the bid month, so don’t forget your flowers. The company requested a target BLG of 76:00 for both seats. Pairing 18 has a duty period that operates MNL-HKG-TPE with a 7:38 sit in HKG. The company has told us that this sit is a one-time issue due to the Spring Festival Golden Week holiday, and will not be a regular occurrence. PSIT Notes: February is a 4-week bid month with President’s Day and Valentine’s Day. The target this month for Memphis was 78 credit hours in both seats, up from 76 in January. With the same amount of flying time, this reduces the number of lines we can build. We’ve seen some change to some of our pairings as flying has shifted to other fleets. This has caused some holes in traditional lines. An example of this is the second week of MCO going to the Airbus, so instead of two MCO lines, we could only build one. Another example would be the Thursday afternoon flight to BOS. Instead of a layover and return to MEM, it is the beginning of a weeklong pairing to the west coast. Pairings 15, 245 and 337 have backend deadheads with minimum turn time after the last live leg. If any of these flights get in late, be advised that you should call GOC and have the pairing rebuilt to make it a legal turn. Disputes:     #24 9 FEB #71 4 FEB #145 10 FEB #24/9 FEB This 10 day pairing operates MEM-ANC-KIX-(NRT)-PVG-TPE-HKG all before the first reset. It then operates HKG-NRT-KIX-MEM. We believe the reset should occur in the first or at least second layover in theater. #71/4 FEB, #145/10 FEB These two pairings are very similar. They operate to CDG (one from MEM the other from IND), and then operate to DEL for a reset. They continue eastbound to NRT and then Sling-shot back to CDG and finally MEM without a reset. We believe these trips should continue east to MEM from NRT or get a reset in CDG before the ocean crossing.

PSIT Notes:

February is another 4-week bid month, with President’s Day on the 16th. We were tasked to build to a 75CH BLG in both seats.

We again did not have enough small pairings to match with the much larger pairings. You will see several 67-62 CH pairings in weeks 3 and 4 that were left over because we did not have the EWR 6 CH pairing to match with them. Most of the left over pairings (10) were carryover in the Captain’s seat and only a couple were carryover in the First Officers seat.

Single Departure Lines (SDLs) are again high for Captains 50 (40%) with the First Officers falling back into the average range of 62 (24%). We have had very little feedback on how well you like or dislike this new trend.

Because we are still a growing fleet and do not have all the pieces/cities that we will have when all of the aircraft are delivered; we are getting more sling-shots between Europe and Asia. Hopefully, when we have all the pieces, we only fly in one direction throughout an entire trip. To help mitigate some of the fatigue associated with these sling-shots, the company will look at the possibility of putting a reset either before or after the NRT-CDG leg

Pilot Ops Report (POR) – The most efficient way for management to be made aware of and correct issues pertaining to hotels, catering and ground transportation is via the Pilot Ops Report (POR). This electronic form is accessed via the pilot.fedex.com website home page. If you have a hotel, catering or ground transportation concern/issue, positive or negative, we encourage you to submit the report. Please submit a separate POR for each issue (for example, please submit one POR for a hotel issue and if there was also a ground transportation issue please submit a second POR.) These Ops Reports, combined with your correspondence to the Trip Services Committee, are reviewed at our quarterly meetings with the Company and are instrumental in making changes.
