holguín is a region standing out for its city's urban design, historical heritage, beaches and people. its coasts made Christopher Columbus say in 1492 "this is the most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen." holguín has always been extraordinary. its geography sublimeness has come to life, evidenced in surprising animals, summits defying gravitational force, poets, and warriors. it has been the cradle for great writers and native fighters like Calixto garcía and Julio grave de Peralta, who joined the independence struggle against the spanish metropolis. this is the land of the Castro-ruz family. its coasts, full of great beaches, will stay in visitors' minds. visiting this area of the island is a different way to understand the Cuban spirit, another way of living the Caribbean. this area is, indeed, one of a kind.holguín province is also one of the most diversified regions in the island. third in the country for its population, after havana and santiago, it has over a million inhabitants in 14 municipalities. its territory, with 9 300.6 km2, presents an heterogeneous geography. located in the noreastern portion of Cuba, it limits to the West with las tunas, to the east with guantánamo, and to the south with santiago and granma. holguín soils are rich in mineral, like nickel, abundant in moa and nicaro regions. the economic activities are based on agriculture, industry and tourism. its main agriculture crops are citrus fruits, tobacco and sugar cane. holguín, the City of Parks, can be easily reached, distant 744 km from havana, a place surrounded by mountains and the ocean. its coasts have the best beaches in our country.

near gibara you may visit the place of the encounter between cultures of the old and new worlds, on october 27, 1492. the place evokes the moment as it was witnessed by those involved, giving the visitor a sense of participation in the primitive scene.

the most important museum dedicated to Cuban pre-Columbiancultures is located in the main townof the Banes municipality. it was inthis area that more of the third partof all the archaeological remains discovered in Cuba so far were found.the museum keeps totally more than20 000 exhibits.

cHorro DE maíTa anD taiNo VillaGE
the largest native funerary area of the antilles, located right in the centre of a region densely populated by Cuban natives up to the 15th century, is closely related to the archaelogical values of Banes municipality. in this area remains more than a hundred of those inhabitants have been found. some of those values are exhibited at the museum. next to the burial site a reproduction of a taino village with typical native houses and other facilities common to those communities can be appreciated too.

GiBara
gibara is a port city turned into the main access by sea to the northeastern region of Cuba in the late 19th century, which explains thegreat colonial architectural wealth of the province.
one of the places to visit is the museo de ambiente Colonial Cubano (Cuban Colonial environment museum), placed in a great neoclassic house built in 1872. You may also make a stop at the villa Blanca or the natural sciences museum, with an exhibition of one of the most complete collections of day time and twilight butterflies of the antilles.

in 1962, in a place now called vita Bay, only 45 minutes from the center of the city, a russian towboat broke down and threw a 110 meters long chain. the chain has been lying on the seabed all this time, now part of one of the best diving areas.
the chain crosses vita Bay from one side to the other, starting at 18 meters deep area reaching 40 meters in the Centre.
