Awareness of the Maxillofacial Prosthodontics Subspecialty By Sujey Morgan Whenever I am asked my profession, I respond that I am a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist. The term is not known by many and most people assume that I am a surgeon of some sort. By training though, I am a dentist. Maxillofacial Prosthodontics is a subspecialty of Prosthodontics—one of the nine specialties of dentistry—that manages the replacement and restoration of lost or missing structures and functions in the head and neck region. Maxillofacial Prosthodontics is a very small field. There are fewer than 300 in the United States. The professional association is called the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics (AAMP). Our mission is to promote education and research and advocate for the care of the patients who need our service. Maxillofacial Prosthodontists work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in Head and Neck departments at various hospitals and universities. We work closely with oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, ear, nose and throat surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists. Our role involves the rehabilitation of patients with defects or disabilities that were present at birth, developed following trauma or acquired following cancer or other diseases. One common procedure is the fabrication of a maxillary obturator.
