Youth in Distress: Managing suicidality and self-harm A new professional development program for the school counselling service Black Dog Institute, in liaison with Department of Education, have developed a new workshop for school counselling staff. With a focus on self-harm and suicide in adolescents, the new program will assist school counselling staff to manage youth distress, self-harm and suicidality. The workshop has been designed to build on the current level of skills of counselling staff, and to further develop confidence in undertaking risk assessments and safety planning for youth in distress. This new program will allow school counselling staff to: Manage youth distress and self- harm Undertake a suicide risk assessment effectively Develop a collaborative safety plan Implement a team approach to treatment planning Provide effective management following a suicide attempt Identify strategies for self-care To find out more or request a session contact the Education team at [email protected]

Youth in Distress: Managing suicidality and self-harm

A new professional development program for the school counselling service

Black Dog Institute, in liaison with Department of Education, have developed a new workshop for school counselling staff. With a focus on self-harm and suicide in adolescents, the new program will assist school counselling staff to manage youth distress, self-harm and suicidality.

The workshop has been designed to build on the current level of skills of counselling staff, and to further develop confidence in undertaking risk assessments and safety planning for youth in distress.

This new program will allow school counselling staff to:

• Manage youth distress and self-harm

• Undertake a suicide riskassessment effectively

• Develop a collaborative safety plan• Implement a team approach to

treatment planning• Provide effective management

following a suicide attempt• Identify strategies for self-care
