4. Bar lengths, splice lengths, and cover dimensions do not need to be adjusted to accommodate potential
fabricationorconstructiontolerancesunlessspecificallymentionedinthisdocumentortheLRFDBridgeDesignManual.
5. When detailing clear dimensions, only put the distance required (i.e., 2 clear, not 2 clear (min)). When
dimensioningdeckthickness,includeminimumwiththedimension(i.e.,9(min),not9).

DowelsandVerticalReinforcement1. Computedowelbar lengthsassumingthedesign lapplusanadditional2 inches. Also,dimensiondowelswith

2. Dimensionlapsbetweendowelbarsandverticalbarsintheplansratherthantheprojectionfromthetopofthefooting.Showthelapstartingfromtheendoftheverticalbarratherthanthetopoftheconcrete.(SeeFigure2.)
3. Showverticalbarsinabutments,wingwalls,retainingwalls,andothersimilarsituationsasendingabovethetopofthefooting.(SeeFigure2.)Thisprovidesvisualclarityforthedrawing,butdoesnotnecessarilyreflecthowthebarwillbeplacedduringconstruction.

5. Forwingwallsthatdonothaveabarriermountedontop,useaUshapedtieatthetopofthewall.(SeeFigure3.)Tiesarenotneededattheendsofwingwallsoratthebottomsofwingwallsthatcantileverpasttheendofafooting.Additionally,tiesarenotnecessaryonthetopsofwingwallswithabarriermountedontop,aslongasthe barrier dowel is adequately lapped to the wingwall vertical bars. Choose bar marks for the ties thatcorrespondtotheconcretepourassociatedwiththem,i.e.iftheconcretearoundthemisabutmentconcrete,designatethemasAbars;iftheconcreteissuperstructureconcrete,designatethemasSbars.

DeckReinforcement
1. When the total lengthof the top transversebarexceeds60 feet, splice the top transversebars toallow foradjustmentinoveralllengthattheoutsideedgeofthebridgedeck.
2. Whenthetotallengthofthetoptransversebaris60feetorless,detailthebarwith2cleartotheedgeofthe
deck,butcomputethebarlengthassuming2clear.Thiswillresultinthetoptransversebarsbeing5shorterthanthetotaldeckwidth.Detailthebottomtransversebarswith4clearfromtheedgeofthedeck.
3. When detailing concrete end diaphragms for integral, semiintegral, or parapet abutments, place transverse
diaphragmbarsparalleltothebeams.(SeeFigure10.)
