influenced by an interest in gasifiedcoal as a feedstock in the USA, cameafter a $200 M Federalencouragement for so-called ‘cleancoal’ technology in the recent energybill. Rentech has signed amemorandum of understanding inearly 2005 for the development of two35,000 bbl/day coal-to-liquids plantsin Ohio. It is also converting anammonia plant in East Dubuque, IL,to operate on gasified coal. Severalpower facilities based on gasified coalhave also been proposed.

Univation seeks petrochemicallicensing opportunities with Pemex –Mexico
Univation Technologies, thepetrochemical technology jv betweenExxonMobil and The Dow ChemicalCo, is seeking to license itstechnology to Pemex, the Mexicanstate oil firm. Already, Univation islicensing its technology to PemexPetroquimica for a 300,000 tonne/ySwing polyethylene being built atCoatzacoalcos, Veracruz state. The$104 M polyethylene unit is due tostart up in 1Q 2006. The Univationmetallocene-based technologyfeatures reduced operating costs andwill enable Pemex to meet growingdemand in Mexico for a range ofadvance polyethylene products. Thegas-phase process provides theflexibility to produce HDPE, LDPE,and metallocene polyethylene in asingle plant.

NEW PLANTSMethanol project based on coke ovengas in China
In Nov 2005, Shanxi TianhaoChemical Co Ltd commissioned thefirst phase of a 300,000 tonne/ymethanol project at Xiaoyi in Shanziprovince. Investment of RMB Yuan500 M for the first phase was providedby the Shandong Yankuang Group. The new plant uses proprietarytechnology for the conversion of cokeoven gas. The technology has theadvantages of a simple process, lowinvestment, high efficiency, energysavings, as well as beingenvironmentally friendly. Key to theprocess is the production of synthesisgas via the pressurization, catalysis, and partial oxidation of coke oven gasin a heat exchanger.

UOP and Total Petrochemicals tointegrate MTO and olefin crackingprocesses
UOP LLC and Total Petrochemicalshave signed agreements for a jointdevelopment programme to integratetechnology aimed at increasing theproduction of light olefins, the basicchemical building blocks for manycommonly used plastic products.Under the agreements, TotalPetrochemicals will construct ademonstration plant at itspetrochemicals complex in Feluy,Belgium. The demonstration plant willconsist of a UOP/HYDRO methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process unit and aTotal Petrochemicals/UOP OlefinCracking process unit. The integratedplant will feed an existing, large-scalepolymerisation pilot plant. The basicengineering for the demonstrationplant is complete and detailedengineering, procurement, andconstruction activities are scheduledto start before the end of 2005. Thedemonstration plant is expected tocome on stream in 2007. Theprogramme is expected to allowfurther optimisation of the combinedprocesses which Total Petrochemicalsintends to apply to a commercialplant. The UOP/HYDRO MTOprocess converts methanol toethylene and propylene along with
