Successful train the trainer course in tailoring
Closing ceremony of qualification course for tailoring teachers
By Khambang Seneboutdy & Tiffany Siegert
Beginning of April the two and half month training of trainer qualification course ended and was
officially closed with a ceremony in the Garment Skills Development Centre.
From end of January, 9 tailoring teachers from six different IVET schools learned how to
communicate their knowledge in tailoring to their students. The participants came from schools
in Phongsaly, Houaphan, Xiengkhouang, Boulikhamxay, Saravan and Attapeu.
The German Development Cooperation project ‘TVET
Teacher Education Programme’(TTEP), implemented
by ‘Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale
Zusammenarbeit’ (GIZ), supported the course. TTEP
project director Mr Eberhard Frey attended the closing
ceremony as well as Ms Katja Freitag, TTEP Junior
Advisor. TTEP supports the training of teachers to
enrich the quality of tailoring courses and thereby
strengthening the Lao tailoring training system as a
whole.
In her speech at the closing ceremony Mrs Borivone Phafong, Director of the Garment Skill
Development Centre, emphasised that the main objective of this training programme was to
give the participants the possibility to improving their professional skills and knowledge in both
vocational pedagogy and practical application of tailoring. During the 11 weeks course, four
different components covered pedagogical, technical and entrepreneurial aspects.
All participants had the opportunity to visit different factories to exchange information about the
workforce demand, training needs, modern technology, production line and career guidance.
Moreover, they could get into direct contact with factory production and human resources
managers on topics like productions processes and recruitment policies. During the course,
participants also had the opportunity to conduct a small market research to practice business
management principles. Through this training, they are enabled to qualify, guide and advise
vocational students on further income generation or to set up their own business. TVET
teachers can use the knowledge on entrepreneurship to develop learning environments which
are appropriate for the occupational field of tailoring.
During the closing ceremony, Mr Frey Project Director expressed his hope that the tailoring
teachers trained in the course could improve their skills based on the received lessons and that
they would use their new knowledge. He hoped for the actual set-up of transfer projects back in
the different IVET schools which would sustainably improve the quality of the tailoring training in
these schools.
