Study background – methodologyThe research team used a case-study methodology. Potential mentoring schemes – from all accross Europe – were identified and screened by local EMCC experts. Importance of evidence base for selection.10 case studies were developed. 5 in the UK, 1-1 further case studies in U.S.; Norway; Turkey; Hungary; Romania. Case studies were based on semi-structured interviews with Mentors, Mentees and program coordinators from the same organization. Interviews were complemented with document analysis. Selected findings5 areas – crucial for program success – were identified, with more than 30+ common findings under these. Examples include:
Mentor characteristics - Mentors are committed to their own learning and development.Mentee characteristics- Mentees are willing and able to seek help and share their perceived learning and development needs with their mentor.Mentoring relationship- Mentors provide mentees with appropriate degrees of challenge to enable them to develop their thinking and practice.- Mentor and mentee construct a mutual understanding of needs, aims and expectations, and a shared sensitivity to each other’s disposition. Institutional support for mentoring- Mentees are provided with development opportunities and/or information to enable them to make the most of mentoring.- Programmes are overseen by a mentoring coordinator.Structure of the program- In matching mentors and mentees, care is taken to avoid too substantial a gap in their relative seniority.
