About this year’s recipients of the Successful Latino/Latina Student Award!

These scholars represent all academic levels… from undergraduates to students currently enrolled in doctorate degrees in the areas of anthropology, audiology, education, instructional technology, and all fields of engineering…chemical, biomedical, mechanical, civil and environmental.

Roots and GPA

These scholars have roots in countries including: Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Venezuela.

They have an average GPA of 3.75 (out of 4).

Their contributions to research and our communities

Their contributions include studies on hurricane preparedness; discoveries that have transnational significance affecting the health and lives of Latinas/os; advances in audiology; enhancements in the academic curricula of our schools; development of technology to assist students with disabilities, support to teachers across the State through the implementation of technology in the classrooms; design of medical devices that could improve patients suffering from diabetes; and many other fascinating projects in the fields of molecular biology, mechanical and electrical engineering.

Scholarly presentations

They have presented their work and joined national and international conferences including the American Anthropological Association; American Academy of Audiology; Association for Educational Communications and Technology International Convention; Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers-Medicine and Biology International Conference and the World Environment and Water Resources Congress…just to name few.

Fellowships and Distinctions

Our students have been recognized as recipients of fellowships and distinctions such as the 2008 Florida Housing Coalition’s Flummer Scholarship; internship at the National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research; the Emerging Minority Business Leaders Summer Institute; Honors College Discovery Scholar; and internship at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Research Alliance in Math and Science.

At USF

Here…at USF our students assist in the recruitment of other minority students into their fields, mentor and tutor students, partner with our faculty to co-teach courses in their colleges, write grants for research opportunities and conduct research, hold leadership positions in student organizations and proudly serve as role models for generations to come.
