“Antibacterial Efficacy of a New Chlorhexidine Slow Release Device to Disinfect Dentinal Tubules LinS,ZuckermanO,WeissEI,MazorY,FussZ

Dentinal tubules of 27 cylindrical bovine root specimenswere infected with Enterococcus faecalis. In nine speci-mens,5%chlorhexidinewasplacedinaslow-releasede-vice(ActivPoint®)for7days,inanothernineirrigationwith10mlof0.2%chlorhexidinewasused,andtheremainingnineservedaspositivecontrol.Powderdentinsamplesob-tainedfromwithinthecanal luminausing ISO025to033burswere examined for thepresenceof vital bacteria byinoculatingbrain-heartinfusionplatesandcountingcolo-ny forming units. Resultswere analyzed using analysis ofvariance and covariance with repeated measures. Heavybacterial infectionwasobserved at the layer close to thelumen in the control specimens, decreasing rapidly fromlayertolayeruptothedeepestlayertested(400–500µm),which contained several hundred colony forming units. Viablebacteriaineachlayerofdentinweresignificantlyre-ducedwithchlorhexidineirrigationsolution(p<0.01)andwere completely eliminatedwith the chlorhexidine slow-releasedevice(p<0.01).”

It is an established procedure to use calcium hydroxide[Ca(OH)2]asatherapeuticcomponenttoachievesteriliza-tionof infected rootcanals.Unfortunately, somebacterialspeciesarerelativelyresistanttoCa(OH)2andarethereforeassociatedwithtreatmentfailures.Theobjectiveofthisstu-dywastoidentifycombinationsofsubstancesthatimpro-veantimicrobialactivity.Ca(OH)2wasusedasasuspensionor as a componentofgutta-perchapoints.
