Success at the Petite Anse Reef Restoration Project Following the launch of the Petite Anse Reef Restoration Project with our marine education and conservation partner WiseOceans in March 2015, we are thrilled to share the news that already over 1,000 fragments of coral have been placed in the Coral Nursery, and that the first of these fragments have been permanently transplanted onto the reef to help preserve the overall ecosystem of the bay. The Project, which aims to protect and nurture 10,000 square metres (100,000 square feet) of limestone reef in the Resort’s horseshoe bay, is scheduled to take place over a three year period. During this time, WiseOceans aims to transplant 16,000 fragments of naturally damaged broken coral onto small metal supports that will be hung underwater in the Coral Nursery. In this environment, the coral is able to grow to a more robust size and secure itself firmly to its support. Once large enough, the coral fragments are transplanted to bare areas of the reef where they will grow happily into large, healthy coral colonies to provide food and habitat, and allowing other species of marine life, such as turtles, to thrive. With the successful growth of the first nursery fragments, WiseOceans is already able to begin transplanting coral fragments to bare areas of reef, aiding the recovery of the Petite Anse reef. Stationed at the Resort’s Coral Cabana just metres from the beach, the team of WiseOceans Marine Educators ensure daily monitoring of the Coral Nursery and provide regular guided snorkelling excursions for guests, sharing their expert insights on all of the various marine life that calls Petite Anse bay home.
