IS IT TIME TO CHANGE CLIFF'S

IMAGE?The image, the fans say, is

wrcng. The singer ? Cliff Richard. His present image? That of thePerfect Pop Singer. He is hand-some, has a fairly good voice, unique enough to be recognisableon all his records as being no oneelse but Cliff. He is smart, talented, and is the sort of boythat any mother would love tohave marry her daughter. Hisfilms, few as they are, are clean, happy, never serious musicals, with all drama of a strong oremotional nature almostcompletely removed.

The perfect image of a pop singer, and the image that most people usedto have of every pop singer in thiscountry. Nowadays we think, andmany agree, that It is the wrongimage. For Cliff should be movingtowards either a rougher approach,in the sense that he doesn't alwaysappear so immaculate onstage, andhis films should have more acting of adramatic or tougher nature.

The Beatles made the first break-through In pop music In more waysthan one. One way in which they didbreak into show business, and helpedCO kill an Image was because theylooked like the REAL boys -next-doortype. Let's be honest, does the boy -next -door image mean somethinglike Cliff? Sophisticated, handsomeand looking as impeccable as JamesBond at the casino? The answer is"No" of course.

The Beatles began the image of boyswho dressed more or less like everyoneelse, who had been through all thephases of teenage life, and who treatedlife as something very serious and a

by ANTONY LOGSDEN

joke at the same time. Not sophisticatedbut with the rough edges still showing. In other words, a lot more like the boy -next -door image that is true to lifetoday.

The reason why Cliff's popularityhas slumped to some degree, eventhough he still retains leadership ofthis country, is that his image is outof date. In the mid -fifties everyonelooked smart and although some woregarish shirts of bright orange, mostpop singers were pretty respectable.Nowadays Cliff is out of date. Groupslike The Stones, The Beatles, TheKinks, Manfred Mann and the rest ofthem rely not on shiny suit imagesbut on the image of rough. tough butvery likable people.

Now Cliff is the nicest pop singeron the scene. He is polite, sincere, considerate, and never seen in frontpage headlines of a critical sort.

I wish, just once that Cliff would dosomething that became controversial.Something that made someone madenough to print it in big headlines.Something that may make his fans andhis not -so -ardent followers feel that heisn't really a machine, but a personwho holds definite views that reallycould be controversial.

The fact boils down to one phrase.Cliff is too nice!! The Beatles haveattacked Cliff in magazines, but Cliffjust shrugs it off. Why can't he, lustonce, hit back and hard-hard enoughto show that behind the smoothveneer of a mohair suit, and impec-cable manners, he can be as surly-and maybe, as rude when pushed asthe rest of us are!!

Off Her Nut !I am writing to say that The Stones'

music is R & B. I agree with Barrie Hilt, but I'm sure Anita White must have goneoff her head.

Some of The Stones' fans buy ChuckBerry records but most of them don'tbecause Chuck's R & B records arepretty fast, like The Stones were whenthey started and they only reached thebottom part of the charts, well now TheStones are playing slower R & B and theyare reaching the top and Chuck who issticking with the faster R & B stays inthe bottom part of the charts.

I am sick and tired of people who keepon about The Stones, Anita is not thefirst to say that The Stones are notR & B.

Own up Anita. You don't like TheStones, why not admit it?

Geoff Brown (Mildenhal0

Stones' Chart ToppersNo, The Rolling Stones are not

overrated! They have had two Number l's in the

last year, It's All Over Now and LittleRed Rooster reached Number 1 in "TheNew Musical Express" Charts and NotFade Away reached Number 2!

They are not overrated in newspapersand magazines. Older people who writeitems for newspapers are always criticiz-ing them, their hair, their clothes, etc.

The Stones are different from othergroups such as The Beatles, Hollies, etc.

What is so great about The Beatles

anyway? All their records sound thesame. Compare She Loves You withI Want To Hold Your Hand, From MeTo You, or I Feel Fine, and you willfind that the difference between them isvery little.

But can you find any similaritybetween It's All Over Now and LittleRed Rooster?

They arc the greatest and they are notoverrated! ! ! !

Linda Scannell (Falmouth)

Stones Best R. & B. GroupI agree wiai Barrie Hilt, The Stones

do play R & B. They might not playR & B every number they do, but theyare R & B.

I don't think Anita White knows whatR & B is, or else she wouldn't have putwhat she did in her column.

The Stones are the best R & B players,I have ever heard.

Anne Symes (Openshaw)

Fabulous SoundIn reply to your article in "Pop

Weekly" No. 23, I would like to pass myopinion on The Stones. What AnitaWhite said was a load of rubbish. TheStones have a fabulous sound, muchdifferent to that of any other group.Their latest LP is even better than thefirst one and each single gets better andbetter. I say "long live The Stones."

AMERICAN FANS DEFEND DAVEToday I received "Pop Weekly" and

was shocked at the article written aboutThe Dave Clark Five and their troublewith American reporters. I myself aman American teen who loves the DC5.I can say that I don't believe the articleyou wrote, for I heard another versionover the radio from a more reliablesource-Dave Clark. It was on radiostation WOWO in Indianapolis, Indiana. The story goes that the boys were latebecause they were held up at a previousinterview. They walked into the pressconference, and the first question wasasked by a rude reporter, wondering whyhe was kept waiting. Dave explained thesituation patiently, but the reporterasked again. Dave again explained whythey were held up. As the conferencecontinued, the same reporter asked thesame question. He was then asked toleave. The reporter left, not the DC5)!

As for Denis Payton in a brawl, youcertainly did get mixed up. After theDC5 left the press conference, a pictureof the boys was taken as Mike Smithwas opening the car door. As Hike's

hand swung around, it looked as thoughhe was in the midst of hitting a reporter.Of course, this was not true, but instantlythe press latched on to the picture andsaid that Mike was striking a reporter.

I don't see how anyone could printsuch a nasty article about the DC5, andas far as I'm concerned, they can stayover here in America forever.

American DC5 Fan (Pittsburgh)

I have just finished reading your articlein "Pop Weekly" concerning The DaveClark Five. You asked the question"Have the DC5 let us down in theStates?" As an American teen, myanswer is NO!! If anything, The DaveClark Five have made a better image foryour groups over here. It is nice to knowthat at least some of your groups areneat and handsome, and the DC5 are aperfect example.

As for their row with the reporters, Iam very doubtful of that. However, lastDecember 16th, when the DC5 appearedin Fort Wayne, Indiana, a similar story

(which my friend and I believe to be thesame) was told to radio station WO WOby Dave Clark himself (whom I DObelieve). He said that after the reporterhad asked him (very rudely) three times, why they were late, the reporter, not theDC5, was asked to leave. Each time hewas asked, Dave explained that he andthe boys had been held up by a previousinterview (which I think is a legitimateexcuse, even if you don't!) Also, areporter took a picture of Mike Smithswinging his hand to open a cur door, and since a reporter was near him, thepicture looked like Mike was billingthe reporter. Doing anything for a

story, the papers said he was, thoughthis is completely false.

The DC5 have just as much wit andtalent (if not more) than any of yourgroups, so please, keep sending it overhere. We love it ! !

Controversy is the key-word-P. J.Proby is the artiste-and, I suppose, controversy is good for business!Whether the title of P.J's new Libertyrelease is fortuitous or deliberate it is,nonetheless, a revival of the old standard"I Apologise"! Once again, this is aperformance one can scarcely ignore. It makes a big impact-one way or theother! There are no half -measures. Apowerfully effective backing is providedby Johnny Scott; P.J. sounds, half -the-time, like Billy Daniels and like P. J.Proby for the rest. Both in his pleasantwarm tones and his ear -shattering onesthere is dominance. As I've said, youJust cannot ignore this performance but, personally, I regard the way-out vocaltreatment to be right against the moodof the composition and the distortionof syllables a little nerve-racking.Undoubtedly, the disc will gain tremend-ous attention and, as an example ofgood record production, it deserves it-the rest is just a matter of individual, personal taste.

Philips' "Your Hurtin' Kinda Love"gives Dusty Springfield her strongestchallenger for chart popularity for sometime. A strong dramatic ballad with ahefty, driving beat satisfies all theemotions called up by the song andDusty is at her very best all through.Written by Ivor Raymonde and MikeHawker (who was partly responsiblefor most of Helen Shapiro's early hits)the composition has distinct leaningstowards the Bacharach influence and iscommanding stuff.

* * *

Another popular lass pops up with abit of a better called "You Can HaveHim"-Dionne Warwick. This makes abig impression, too, on first hearing butthere is little of the Dionne Warwick wecame to love through her earlier hits. The mood of the song is against the lowwarm tones; in their place we have somecrystal-clear biting tones that cutthrough a pretty hefty backing veryneatly. A good contrast when comparedwith Dionne's gentler style. My onlyreservation about this one is theelusiveness of the melody; any successmust be based on the beat and overalleffect.

* * *

"He Doesn't Love Me," on Decca, isby far and away the best disc to comefrom young Adrienne Poster. I wasattracted, on the very first spin, by theclean-cut sound of the production andby Adrienne's assured and persuasiveperformance. The rhythm is totallyinfectious albeit inspired by the brandimage of The Supremes. It is not, however, a complete carbon copy ofsuch. Melodically, the song has muchattraction and I hope the disc itself willattract the general ear.

*** BO U Q U ET ******* Gene Pitney has done it again! ** Not surprising, really! His new ** Stateside release, I Must Be ** Seeing Things, is well above his ** high average. The song is a strong ** romantic ballad given a pretty ** powerful yet altogether irresist-* ible beat. Gene, himself, ;is in ** fine clear voice, as usual; a very ** tight performance that packs a ** punch of the special Pitney kind. ** The total effect is commanding, ** right from the very first note-and ** it is, perhaps, the most appealing ** of all Gene's good discs since ** Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa. **** **** *** *** ****

Tony Jackson first recorded "LovePotion No. 9" when he was a Searcher,of course; now, he has recorded it, onPye, in his own right as a solo performer. The distinctive sound of the guitarcaptures the ear at the beginning andTony holds the attention with a strongvocal performance. This is not a copyof The Searchers recording but anattempt to inject a little freshness ofapproach-which such a revival requires.I think it succeeds and let's hope, forTony's sake, the disc will, too!

* **The new Warner Bros. release of

The Everly Brothers has Don and Philtied up with a real uptempo beater.Heavily recorded, just short of distor-tion, "You're My Girl" is the kind ofthing with which the boys enjoyed chartsuccess awhile back; although I thinkit's true to say they never fared betterthan when they were in their gentler, more lyrical mood. On this new one thebeat is very danceable but there is littleother particular distinction.

* a *

"I'll Stop At Nothing" says SandieShaw on her new Pye platter and I thinkit is her best offering yet. Like her firsthit, inasmuch as there is a catching, powerful title phrase-the rest showsa certain tenderness of tone we've notfully appreciated before. A strongsong-a strong performance with astrong hit potential.

* * *

The Mongrels, on Decca, handle "MyLove For You" very nicely and thegentle beat of this melodic compositionis well within today's idiom. It is allvery pleasant on the ear but there isnothing strikingly new about the soundor the melody to attract the attention.

With The Wild Boys backing him,Heinz comes up on the Columbia labelwith "Digging My Potatoes." This is ahappy enough foot -tapper with aslightly novel lyric. It breezes along ata fairish pace and the overall effect isvery pleasant.

Having hopped on that bus to godowntown, Petula Clark found some-where to dance to the beat; on her newPye disc she proclaims, very happy,"I Know A Place"-and a very happydisc, too. "The Place" is a beat cellarand things are really swinging! Hence, the lyric has much contemporarytopicality and the beat and rhythm isgoing to be very popular in lots ofcellars, dance halls and coffee bars. Petis in an infectious mood and all in allthis is a very welcome, very happyproduction.

BRICKBATThere is so much distortion on

Decca's See That My Grave IsKept Clean (What a title! !) thatit is very difficult to hear, let aloneassess, the quality of the groupcalling themselves just Paul'sDisciples. To my ear, this is anundisciplined noise; the lyric islost through lack of clarity and bybeing almost totally submerged bythe top-heavy backing. There isno melodic content to stick in themind and the result is somewhatraucous; everything seems to behappening at once but lack ofseparation and definition makes itall sound a bit chaotic. There isnothing to latch on to. I think itis a great pity that any groupshould have to make its disc debutunder such handicapped conditions.

And that's your little lot for anotherweek. I've enjoyed this selection myselfand I hope you find what you want whenyou browse through it.

See you next week? Till then-happy memories.

'Bye for now.

Well, well, well! Talk about scoop the board. Our pop chartsended up rather like a game of cards-with Elvis holding all the aces! !Yes, it was Elvis fans who really made the excitement in this poll, smashing Elvis into as many positions in the Poll as they were allowedto, with thousands of votes for him as the No. 1 singer.

Elvis came first in the BestArtiste on Wax section, with aclear lead over Cliff and TheBeatles. He also came first in theMost -Read Artiste section, andthe Best -Liked Photographed sec-tion, and of course, as I mentionedearlier, he also took first place inthe World Personality section.

For Elvis this has been the startI believe, to yet another year ofhits, new films which as usual mustmake millions of dollars and acertain knowledge for his fansthat Elvis will live on, and on andon. Certainly it has proved thatwhen it comes to the crunch theElvis fans are the strongest andmost effective body of fansthroughout the world. Not onlydid he win our Poll but in nearlyevery poll in Great Britain inother musical papers he managedto take first place.

The amazing facts stand out forthemselves. Elvis as a hitmakerhas been on the scene for ten yearsand looks like being here for yetanother ten. As a film actor he isalmost certain to be o of thebiggest money spinners if the nextten years as well. He already hashis next film lined up for releasehere "Girl Happy," and after thathas "Tickle Me" and "Polynesian

Paradise" ready to hit the screens, and has now been signed to appearin another for Paramount entitled"Soon I'll Wed My Love." Infact, no one is quite sure just howmany films Elvis does have on theskeds at the moment. It could beanything from ten to twenty.

It is a well-known fact that hestill has some seven films tocomplete for different companiesand that he also has a new contractjust issued by MGM which giveshim another three films. Whateverhappens, the Presley formula ofthree films a year seems destinedto go on for many years yet.

No mere few hundred wordfeature can describe, or evenattempt to describe the fantasticcareer of Elvis Presley, the careerwhich has led up to Elvis toppingmany of the sections in our Poll. It's been an unusual career in away, with Elvis rarely seen inpublic and even more rarely seenor heard on radio or TV. Certainlyon entertainment outlets like stageshows, he must be the only singerwho has managed to stay com-pletely out of the limelight andyet still be able to have so manymillions of ardent supportersthroughout the world.

To Elvis Presley, the undoubtedKing of Pop. Thank You.

Buzzin' Dozen a feeling that it could do the same againwith this one. The chances are that ifthis disc clicks the trio will be back hereagain for more radio and TV dates.

by DON CRISPA group with more than the usual

amount of talent, humour and lastingability have arrived on the scene. Theyare called THE SIZE SEVEN, nothingto do with, I'm happy to say, the size ofhats they take. Actually there are onlysix of them. Their new disc is calledWhere Do We Go From Here which waspenned by one of the group, just anotherexample of their many talents. It's agas disc, different enough, I feel, tomake the grade with a bit of extraplugging.

The boy everyone is tipping to makethe grade into the Top Twenty at anytime, TOM JONES, is just beginningto realise that it could all happen. Firstoff, his single It's Not Unusual is startingto move and he is getting more and moreoffers every day for TV, radio and stageappearances. He now has a groupcalled The Squires, who like Tom are allWelsh. A tall, handsome guy with araffish air of Elvis Presley, the earlier Elthat is, about him, Tom could just infact show the cynics that Welsh singersdon't have to sing Welsh mountainsongs to be a success.

Unless we watch out we may befinding Great Britain back in herAmerican hit parade mood. ForCHUCK JACKSON, an artiste newto us, but very well-known in the Statescould become the biggest thing out withhis new single called Since I Don'tHave You. The 'B' side is also a numberwith hit parade potential, Hand It Over, but my feelings are that with enoughpressure Pye Records could move thisdisc into the charts. In the States Chuckis well-known, especially for his albumwork, and I think it could well be thathis name will be made over here via thisnew single.

Yet another new group and also withan unusual nasty: which seems to bethe vogue for Lew groups. HoweverSHELLEY as the group are called, dohave a different sound on their disc andit could well become a smash. I like itand I believe that it will have a stab atthe lower regions of the charts providedthat it gets enough promotion. A pitythat the song couldn't have beenslightly more suitable. However I expectthey may make it by talent alone.

A disc that isn't getting enough airplayis CHUBBY CHECKER'S LoverlyLoverly which should be, because it'sone of his best rhythmic discs since theTwist records that he made so famous. With more airplay than he is gettingnow I'm sure Chubby could start a chartcomeback, even though I hear he ismaking money hand over fist in theUnited States. But the Chubby Checkername hasn't been entirely forgotten andhis fans over here I'm sure will help thedisc along.

The American group, THE DIXIECUPS have another new single outcalled Little Bell and after their successwith Chapel Of Love and their singlePeople Say, they may make it once againwith this cutie of a cut. It's a platterwith a lot of punch and one that shouldappeal to people of all ages. The threegirls have managed to blend theirvoices in a style that is certainly differentfrom most of the British female vocaltrios, and one that I find ratherfascinating.

Our old friend MARK WYNTER,who hasn't been faring too well of latewith his records, comes up with Can IGet To Know You Better, which althougha nice single isn't that strong. It couldmake the charts but it will need a lot ofhelp from the fans and from the TVpeople. Not that that should be toomuch bother to the ever -popular Mark.

One of our most experienced artistes,it's doubtful whether a hit would makemuch difference to his always hectic life.

A group already creating quite asmall stir for themselves are PETER'SFACES, They now have a single outwhich could cause an even bigger stir. It's a waxing titled De Boom Lay Boomwhich may strike you as an unusualtitle but whatever happens the soundwill strike you anyway. It's a knockoutrecord and one that I predict couldmake it. I'm getting chart -tipping happy, aren't I? But it's true. A knockoutsingle from a knockout group. It's apity that every group has to have a funnytitle for a disc, but then again, this is adisc that needs that funny title.

THE NEWBEATS, who smashedover here against stiff competition withBread And Butter and whose next platterthen flopped, have a cutting out nowwhich could turn the tables in theirfavour again. The single is calledBreak Away From That Boy. It's not themost compelling disc of the year, but ithas that quality about it which pushedthe first Newbeats' disc up into theupper regions of our charts and I have

Another group, again from Pye whoare turning out some mighty salablerecords lately. They have a new singerand group called ALAN DEAN ANDHIS PROBLEMS. The disc they arcall getting excited about is calledThunder And Rain which sounds exactlylike a thundering great hit to me. Thegroup who have appeared in manyplaces in the North of England and inGermany haven't made the top of thecharts in any popularity polls or evenhit the high spots in any way or form. But on the sound of this record theycould be doing just that in the not toodistant future.

A record which doesn't need any TVplugs to put it straight into the No. 1

slot is Goodnight by ROY ORBISON.It's a smash sound that only Roy canput on record and a single that shouldshoot into the charts in no time flat.I rate it as one of the best platters I'veever heard from Roy and it's almostcertain to make that No. I position.I can see why Decca rush -released this.Roy is now starting his tour of GreatBritain which like the record will be ablockbuster sell-out. The Roy Orbisonimage must be one of the strongest inthe world.

The United States group who smashedour charts with a disc called Louie Louiewhich one of our top disc -jockeysdescribed as "terrible" have a newwaxing waiting to go into the No. 1 slot.Everyone is enthusiastic at it's chances, and although I don't see it making theTop Twenty unless it gets some TV plugsor unless it gets heavy airplay, it couldbecome the start to another successionof smaller hits for THE KINGSMEN.In America the disc is one of the hottestsingles and the sales have brought aheavy amount of loot to the boys!Watch this one-as it could just take off.

CAN'BRENDAKEEPIT UP?by Barry Thorne

One of the most surprising PollWinners in this year's Female Personalitysection was Brenda Lee. Don't get mewrong, I'm not underrating her. But asa singer who lately has had some verystiff competition, I was surprised to seeher name at the very top of the votes, although Dusty Springfield nearly caughtup with her too. Her latest disc ThanksA Lot is yet another indication of the wayin which this girl can turn from deep, emotional ballads to fast rockers andstill give a fantastic change to every disc.

The amazing thing to me why Brendahas dominated the charts, the pollscharts, is that for years she has been theNo. 1 singer and in the last few yearsmore and more girl singers have stoppedbeing just one -hit successes and startedto hit the charts with three or fourrecords. Cilia Black, Sandie Shaw andDusty Springfield arc but three examples.

All of them are trying harder andharder every day to be the No. I PopSinger. Few have had a chance really toovertake Brenda but the battle ishotting up. Brenda, known affection-ately as "Little Miss Dynamite" mustbe regarded 1 think in the same lightas The Beatles and Elvis. For years shehas been hitting the charts in GreatBritain with everything from wildrockers to sweet and slow ballads.Lately however, she has found thatballads have been her main forte, andalthough recently she did make a returnto the charts with Is It True? the MickieMost British -produced disc, which wasa fast number, she is more concernedwith recording the heavy emotionalballads which have brought her suchfantastic popularity over here. Withoutwanting to be pessimistic I think thatour little Brenda will really have to gosome if she wants to win next year's

"Pop Weekly" Poll. After all, she hasbeen top chart maker for many years. Now that girls are in favour more thanthey have ever been, I doubt whetheranyone will want to try and say withflat finality that the "Little MissDynamite" will be No. I again inthe New Year.

But as a tribute to her, what more canI say than she is the only Americansinger to make the Female Pop Pollevery time with such consistency, andthat whatever happens with the numberof new singers who happen on thescene. Brenda will still be in the musicalcharts herself next year and for a longtime to come. To me, she is the veryheart and soul of pop music at its bestand 1 for one will be very sorry if shehas to vacate the tide of No. 1 FemaleSinger in the years to come.

YOU CAN'T BEAT THE BEAMSAlthough The Beatles didn't head any.

of our Polls as winners, we felt we mustgive them a tribute for at least two verygood reasons. That as opposed to theother papers, we didn't carry a Poll forgroups, which we feel sure they wouldundoubtedly have won. That also TheBeatles have obviously been the biggestinfluence in pop music for many yearsand obviously have done more for Britishacts than any other person or persons.

In the Best Artiste On Wax sectionthey made third place and took secondplace to Elvis as the Most -ReadArtiste. Best -Liked PhotographedArtiste had them featured in thethird position again, and in the WorldPersonality (Male) John Lennon took aplacing.

It's obvious that had we had a sectionheaded World's Best Group, that TheBeatles would have taken top slot. Butthen, that was obvious to most peopleanyway. How can one overlook thegreatest group in living memory? Therehave been jazz groups, modern andtraditional, who have made big head-lines, and just vocal acts like The KingBrothers and many other small groups. But never have there been a group whohave been so readily welcomed in justabout every country in the world.

No other group have produced suchsensational selling records and no othergroup have managed to achieve such afantastic break -through to the world ofrecord buyers. Not only are they apotential source of new songs and hitsfor many years to come but they arenow rated as being one of the biggestdraws on the film screens too.

In fact whatever The Beatles do theysimply cannot go wrong and whoeverialks about them being out of the scenein a few years is talking through a holeto the head. The Beatles are the topsand there isn't as yet anyone to beatthem to the punch when it comes todrawing huge crowds and also to sellingso many records in so short a time. Notonly that but they are the one groupwho have managed to keep their senseof fun, although all of them are reputedto be millionaires and if not millionairesthen very close to it.

For a group to emerge as top -sellingstars in not one but in just about everycountry and to make themselves thebiggest thing in history in less than notime is amazing. The Beatles havemanaged to do all this in two shortyears. Two years which have packedtheir lives full of millions of fans ofjust about every race that one can thinkof. Fans who have bought nearly ahundred million records in the fastestsale in history.

These fans will still be with TheBeatles today, tomorrow and for a very, very long time. I only hope The Beatlescan stand the pace which is being setfor them as the world's most famousgroup.POP Weekly 20 2 65

Can TheTippad in our polls as the "Most

Likely to Succeed," The Moody Bluescertainly deserve this recognition.Formerly a group called Denny Laineand The Diplomats, The Moody Blueshave rapidly established a complete)new image for themselves. Once the>were just an ordinary rock group. Nowthey are rated as one of the best R & Bteams in the country. Their disc Go \o;texceeded even their expectations and

shot straight to the No. 1 slot.

They have just completed a Herssuccessful stage debut on the ChuckBerry tour and arc nom heading foreven bigger heights with their recordbeing tipped to hit the charts in no timeflat in the United States.

As one of the "new R & B" groupsthat have sprung up since the start ofthe R & B scene. I asked The MoodyBlues what the> thought their chancesof succeeding in the future were. "Wethink we have got quite a strong chance"they told me. "Our stage act is differentand is certainl> not like the usual sortof stage act that people used to do. Ifwe can get some good songs we thinkwe can make it."

Since their Go NOW has smashed thecharts The Moody Blues are going allout to hit the scene, the pop scene. thatis, as hard as possible. The> ha>e had astring of one nighters, TN, and radiootTered to them and are certainl>to push their discs into the charts if thecan be sure of that promotion all thetime.

I asked some of the teenagers in theMarquee Club in London who the>thought would be the biggest group thisyear, the biggest new group of courseAll of them said The Mood> Blues. One can hard!) blame them. Apartfrom their >cry polished and commercialrecord The Moody Blues are one of thefew groups to ever ha'c such a stageperformance.

I would say without hesitation thatif The Moody Blues can continue tomake such appcalingl> commercialplatters that their future in the pop%%odd was assured, I doubt whetherThe Moody Blues could in fact slipOut of popularity for an> length oftime with such a superb stage act.
