Newman Riga Library celebrates with musicby Kristina Gabalski

Churchville/Riga area residents were treated to a special concert the evening of Thursday, April 14. Clas-sical guitarist Dr. Kenneth Meyer performed as part of the Newman Riga Library’s celebration of National Library Week.

Dr. Meyer, who lives in Geneva, New York, cur-rently directs the guitar studies program at Syracuse University’s Setnor School of Music. He holds degrees in Music Composition and Performance from the State University of New York at Fredonia and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the Eastman School of Music. He has served on the faculties of East Carolina University, SUNY at Fredonia and the East-man School of Music.

Described as, “A thinking man’s guitarist,” Dr. Meyer is a national first-prize winner at the Music Teacher’s National Association Collegiate Artist Competition.

He delighted the audience at Newman Riga with a program, which included five short pieces by Renais-sance composer John Dowland (1563-1626), a Prelude, Fuga and Allegro, by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-

1750) and Quatro Valses Venezolanos by Antonio Lauro (1917-1986).

Additionally, Dr. Meyer performed a piece written especially for him in 2012 by Jesse Jones called Ricor-danza. Dr. Meyer said the piece, which includes a num-ber of different musical characters coming in and out of focus, is a reflection on the nature of musical memory. Following its performance, Dr. Meyer told the audience he had been nervous performing the piece as it was the first time he had played it, “from memory.”

Dr. Meyer has performed at the Newman Riga Library on several other occasions; he told the audience he was happy to be back in Churchville on such a beautiful spring evening.

The theme for National Library Week 2016, which was observed from April 10 through 16, was “Libraries Trans-form.” According to the American Library Association, the observance is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.

All libraries - school, public, academic and special - participate in the observance.

Plans under way for the fourth annual “Low Bridge High Water” May festivalby Doug Hickerson

As you observe the canal low and murky

now, look ahead to the merry month of May when Brockport celebrates the Erie Canal opening. The fourth annual “Low Bridge High Water” festival on May 12, 13 and 14 will include history, recreation, music, plus food and drink.

New this year, a mural will be installed in Sagawa Park and dedicated on Saturday, May 14. It is titled “Portraits of Our Past,” by muralist Rick Muto. The popular scull-ing regatta called the “Village to Village Challenge” (Spencerport to Brockport) returns Saturday after a hiatus last year. Music on Saturday will include the Golden Eagles String Band, Jim Foote’s “Vil-lage Music” and Rosanne, Ned and Nick Mascari’s “Thicker Than Water.”

Saturday also includes these family focused activities:•Poster Contest - The work of fourth grad-ers depicting scenes of the Erie Canal•Storytelling - Gretchen Sepik as ‘Erie Canal Gal Sal’•Kids Crafts Events•Free Pizza Picnic

On Friday evening at the Welcome Center, The Big Tent Craft Beer Event, organized by Stoneyard Brewing, returns with 40 craft breweries participating. The event will raise funds for “Bring Row-ing to Brockport”, Camp Good Days and Brockport’s Camp Abilities.

On Thursday, the Morgan-Manning House will host the showing of the new documentary film, “Boom and Bust: America’s Journey on the Erie Canal.”

The “Low Bridge High Water” festival was the inspiration of Village Mayor Margay Blackman over four years ago. “I got to thinking how the mood of winter literally sinks in, as the canal is drained in November,” she said. “Then, I thought about how eagerly people await the return of the water in May. I concluded it’s some-thing we need to celebrate.”

The Mayor said she was pleased to see how the festival and the organizing com-mittee have expanded since 2013. The com-mittee began meeting in October, 2015, to plan this year’s event. Final plans and the schedule will be announced later.

Nominate a cancer survivor to be honored at the Wilmot Warrior Walk

UR Medicine’s Wilmot Cancer Institute is accepting nominations of cancer survi-vors and caregivers for its fourth annual Wilmot Warrior Walk, which celebrates life beyond cancer. This year’s walk will take place Sunday, September 11, at Highland Park in Rochester.

The Wilmot Warrior Walk features a 5K, 10K, 1-mile walk and family activities. The event raises funds for the Judy DiMarzo Cancer Survivorship Program as well as for cancer research at Wilmot.

The community is invited to nominate individuals who have had a cancer diag-nosis or who have supported someone else with cancer.

“Fighting for those diagnosed with can-cer and remembering those we’ve lost is the reason we host this event every year, so it’s important to pay tribute to survivors

by honoring them at the Wilmot Warrior Walk,” says Tiffany Paine-Cirrincione, Associate Director of Advancement and Community Events for Wilmot Cancer In-stitute. “Honorees demonstrate discipline and mental focus. They exemplify the essential skill of dealing with life when it presents a struggle.”

The deadline to submit a nomination is May 11. Honorees will be announced in early summer. Nominees will not be shared publicly until they have accepted the nomination.

Honor Flight Rochester seeks veterans for Honor FlightsFollowing World War II, Americans clearly drew a line

in the sand against tyranny by serving in the U.S. armed forces during the Korean War and in the lengthy period known as the “Cold War.”

Their sacrifices preserved democracy throughout the world as other forces tried to impose their philosophy upon other weaker countries. Honor Flight Rochester (HFR) rec-ognizes these veterans and invites these men and women to apply for a free Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. This covers veterans who served between 1947-1964.

“The men and women who answered our country’s call during those tense times are no less deserving of our admi-ration,” said HFR Co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors Peter J. Glennon, Esq. (Major, Ret. USAF). “They stood their posts in the United States and in foreign lands to preserve freedom. We want to take them on an Honor Flight to thank them for their service.”

“Many former service members feel that because they were not in combat that they aren’t entitled to an Honor Flight. We disagree. We honor them and their service and we want them to fly to Washington, D.C.,” said HFR President Richard Stewart.

This is an appeal for applications. As World War II vet-erans pass in final review, HFR will focus on those who served from 1947 up until 1964. HFR’s fall flights will be filled predominantly by veterans from the eras of the Korean War (1950-53) and that portion of the Cold War. They are also planning future Honor Flights for Vietnam War veterans.

Veterans can apply for an Honor Flight trip online at Honor Flight Rochester or by picking up paper applica-tions at area town halls. Honor Flights are supported by community gifts.


Hilton Board of Education adopts new Budget ProposalAt its regular meeting on April 12, the Hilton Cen-

tral School District Board of Education adopted a $79.9 million budget proposal for the 2016-17 school year. This is a 3.97 percent increase over last year’s budget, which will result in an estimated 0.4 percent tax rate decrease in all district towns if approved by voters on May 17. The decrease in the tax rate is due to additional state aid.

“I am proud of this year’s proposed budget. The process was transparent and valued all stakehold-ers’ input,” said Superintendent Casey Kosiorek. “This proposed plan is responsible to the taxpay-ers and also provides great opportunities for our students.”

The adopted budget qualifies Hilton School Dis-trict residents for a property tax rebate because it is under the state imposed Property Tax Levy Cap. For most property owners, this serves as approximately three percent of their annual school taxes paid.

Details of the budget will be available on the Hil-ton District website at www.hilton.k12.ny.us/budget-profile.htm. Residents will receive a budget news-letter through the mail in May and a list of budget presentations will be posted on the website.

On Tuesday, May 17, district residents can vote on the budget proposition as well as a $1,373,294 bus purchase proposition and four open positions on the Board of Education. Voters will select three board members to serve three-year terms and one board member to serve the remaining two years of Dan Wellington’s term. The terms of Michelle Ames, Barbara Cutrona and Nancy Pickering will expire June 30.

Polls located at Hilton High School (Parma, Clarkson and Hamlin residents) and Northwood Elementary School (Greece residents) will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Voters must be registered with the Monroe County Board of Elections or with District Clerk Julie Norris (392-1000, ext. 7099) to vote on May 17. Handicapped accessible parking is available.


Army Strong Community Centers pilot ending

The U.S. Army Reserve Command has announced it will not be re-competing the contract for six Army Strong Community Centers that were part of a U.S. Army Re-serve pilot program. Services provided by the center in Rochester will transition to other delivery methods ef-fective June 30.

While some services at the physical centers will be im-pacted, the U.S. Army Reserve Family Programs will help to transition members of the Army Reserve and Veteran community with the Fort Family Outreach and Support Center. Fort Family is available online and by calling toll free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to respond, refer, provide and connect Soldiers and Family members to critical resources. Additionally, services for Common Access Card and Defense Enrollment Eligibil-ity Reporting System registration will be available at the Navy Operational Support Center Rochester.

U.S. Army Reserve leaders remain committed to taking care of Soldiers, Veterans and Family members regard-less of where they are located in the country. Focusing on virtual tools, accessible from anywhere at any time, will improve the readiness and resilience of the soldiers, units and families. The Army Reserve will also continue other partnership and community outreach services to enhance the quality of life for both the military and the surrounding communities.

Some of the proceeds will go to Friends of the Public Library. We will also send a donation to the Kathleen Anne Tenny Animal Shelter. Our third donation this year will be to benefit Mackenzie Bennett, a five year old with cancer. Her family needs help with medical expenses and travel expenses for further treatment.

DiFlorio’s five RBI’s paces Saintsby Warren Kozireski

Shortstop Nick DiFlorio knocked a run in the first inning, two in the third and stroked a two-run home run in the fourth as Churchville-Chili defeated Leroy 8-4 in a non-league baseball game.

DiFlorio’s RBI double in the first came after Scott Neu led off the inning with a single and stolen base.

After the Knights scored three runs in the third after their first five batters reached base, Churchville-Chili countered in their half of the stanza by batting around and plating four runs to retake the lead.

Aaron Monroe led off the rally with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and third on an infield single by Neu. After another stolen base, DiFlorio drove both in with a single and he took third on a wild throw home. Billy Sanborn knocked him in with an RBI sacrifice fly. Ben Martin singled and advanced to second on an error

before another error allowed him to score from second on a dropped infield pop.

The Saints added two more runs in the fourth as Monroe reached on an error and scored ahead of DiFlorio’s two-run home run to left on a 3-2 pitch.

After the Knights scored once in the fifth, the Saints responded in the bottom half as left fielder Jason Wallace led off by reaching second on an infield single and ensuing throwing error. After stealing third, Monroe plated him driving a single to left on a hanging curveball.

Starting pitcher Tyler Johnson threw four innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs to earn the win. Dylan Angora picked up the three-inning save al-lowing only two hits and striking out four. He allowed just one walk over the final ten Knights batters.

DiFlorio was 3-for-4 with five RBI’s and two runs scored.

Ryan nets eight for Cadetsby Warren Kozireski

Senior Rachel Ryan scored eight goals - all but one unassisted - to lead Hilton to a 13-4 girls’ lacrosse victory over the Greece Lightning.

The Lightning scored the first goal of the game and led 3-2 after the first eight minutes of the contest, but were shutout for the next 40-plus minutes and held to just one more goal the rest of the way by goaltender Shaina Doser and a defense led by seniors Kaycie Malyk and Chloe Wormsley with junior Josephine Ban and LeeAnna Bianchi.

Amanda Hilderbrandt tied the game 3-3 with an unassisted drive to the net at 8:27 before Ryan scored four consecutive goals during the remainder of the first half.

Ryan opened the second half with an underhand shot at 7:21. Lauryn Simmons made it 9-3 off a pass from Payton Cook and Ryan followed 59 seconds later with her seventh of the contest.

Dalle Carrighan and Hilderbrandt scored 1:07 apart to make it 12-3 before Ryan finished with her eighth of the game with three minutes remaining.

Doser, an eighth-grader - made ten saves in the Hilton net with many from point-blank range.

Holley sweeps in tennisby Warren Kozireski

Senior-laden Holley swept visiting Kend-all in straight sets through all three singles matches and both doubles to improve to 3-1 in the young season.

“We’re overachieving based on our expe-rience level,” Holley head coach John Grillo said. “Most of these seniors played junior varsity last season, but they are stepping up and meeting the challenge. “We hope to be in contention for a league title.”

Senior Brady Smith won at first singles 6-1, 7-5; Pablo Romero at second singles 6-3, 6-1; and Cameron Bennage took third singles 6-0, 6-1.

Seniors Melanie Klossner and Gabe Mendoza won a first doubles 6-3, 6-1 while junior Derek McArthur and senior Jake DeSimone had no difficulty in the 6-0, 6-0 win at second doubles.

The Hawks have also defeated Pembroke and Oakfield-Alabama this season with their only loss a tight affair to two-time defending champ Alexander.

Jason Day named Hickok Belt® Award winner for March 2016

Professional golfer Jason Day has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of March 2016. A select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA) conducted the voting. The voters selected Day based on his wins at both the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the WGC-Dell Match Play tournaments.

Other finalists for the month of March in order of how the NSMA voters ranked them included: Alex Morgan (soccer), Brian Elliott (hockey), Lucas Browne (boxing), Jenn Suhr (track & field), Dallas Seavey

Bright Raven gymnasts win State ChampionshipsBright Raven Gymnastics of Gates traveled to Suf-

fern, New York, April 1 through 3 to compete in the 2016 Level 7/8 USA Gymnastics State Meet where four team members emerged as champions in their respective divisions.

In the Level 8 Junior D competition, 13-year-old Jada Moore of Gates earned first place on vault and also placed second in floor exercise. In the Junior E division, Bailey Chudner, age 14 of Victor placed

third on vault, uneven paral-lel bars and all around. Emily Field of Greece won third on balance beam in the same di-vision. 12-year-old Sydney Sack of Spencerport placed third in floor exercise in the Child Divi-sion.

In the Level 7 Child D compe-tition, 11-year-old Madeline Pitts of Victor

was named a three time State Champion, fin-ishing first on vault, balance beam and floor exercise. In all around competi-tion, Madeline finished in third place. 12-year-old Kylie Rozzie of Spencerport finished in first place in floor exercise in the Junior A Divi-sion.

In the Senior C Division, 14-year old Camer-on Kull of Pitts-ford was first in floor exercise and third on balance beam. Abby Wilkins of Pittsford earned second place on the un-even parallel bars and third in floor exercise in the Senior D division.

Four of these Bright Raven Team members have qualified to advance to the Level 7/8 Regional Cham-pionships by earning high all around scores at the State Meet. Jada Moore, Bailey Chudner, Emily Field and Madeline Pitts will travel to Northborough, Massachusettes later in April to compete against gymnasts from the New England States in addition to New York.

The Street Machines of Rochester present annual outdoor auto show

The 42nd Annual Outdoor Auto Show will take place on Sunday, June 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Badgerow Park, 1120 Latta Road, Greece. The show will exhibit vehicles of all types, including Antiques, Classics, Motorcycles, Street Machines, Customs, Street Rods, Race Cars, Sport Com-pacts and Stock to Modified cars and trucks. The awards presentation will be held at 4 p.m. In past years, the show field has filled with more than three thousand spectators and over five hundred vehicles.

On Saturday, June 11, the annual Free “Cruise In at the Park” will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. with a live band, Rockhouse Riot. Food and drinks will also be available. This year a poker run will go on prior to the event at 1 p.m.

For out of town guests, The Street Machines will work with the Holiday Inn Express to reserve a block of rooms for the anticipated participants.

Peggy Naughton receives local recognition for her years in the restaurant businessby Kristina Gabalski

It’s 10:30 on a Tuesday morning and Peggy Naughton says she’s been busy all day. The long-time owner of the Johnson House Restaurant in Churchville celebrated her 80th birthday this past February and continues to keep to a demanding schedule that would likely be a challenge for someone half her age.

On February 27, Peggy’s large family gathered for a private party at the Johnson House. “All my eight children were here and 15 of my 19 grandchildren,” Peggy says. In all, 53 people attended, including extended family.

“We had a beautiful buffet,” Peggy says, “there was a band and dancing.” Her out-of-town children traveled to Churchville from Boston, Washington and Seattle. A grand-daughter flew-in from Rwanda.

“It was a lovely affair, tremendous,” Peggy says. Addi-tionally, she received 85 birthday cards in the mail from customers as well as some gifts.

Customers celebrated with Peggy the Friday evening before the private family party, and enjoyed complimentary birthday cake.

Additionally, Peggy continues to celebrate her long life and successful business career this spring with two very special recognitions.

In March, she was honored as Business Leader of the Year for the Tops 2016 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Roch-ester, and in May, Peggy will receive a Silver Spoon Award from the New York State Restaurant Association in Roch-ester at the Strathallan.

Peggy says she enjoyed the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and was able to meet with local dignitaries and attend Mass at St. Mary’s at 9 a.m. “It was a beautiful day,” she says, “there were thousands of people there.”

This year’s grand marshall was Captain Lynde Johnston, a 50-year veteran of the Rochester Police Department.

In a biography of Peggy on the rochesterparade.com website, organizers wrote that Peggy epitomizes “Cead Mile Failte,” by greeting each customer at the door every night. “For nearly 40 years, Peggy has put her heart and soul into making the restaurant one of the best in the area,” the website states.

Of the prestigious Silver Spoon Award, Peggy notes, “it is quite an honor.”

According to the New York State Restaurant Association, the annual award is presented to a restauranteur or food service operator who was not, “born with a silver spoon, but earned the admiration and respect of his or her peers through hard work and dedication to our industry and community.”

Peggy says she continues her tongue-in-cheek “20 year plan” with one of her sons to stay at the helm of the Johnson House as long as she feels healthy and capable.

“My son told me, you’ll only be 100 when you retire,” Peggy jokes. “I’m kept very busy,” she says of her business, “business is very good.”

She says her long-time customers continue to keep the restaurant going. “I treat them like family and they treat me like family,” she explains. Her customer base comes from all over the area, Peggy adds.

Peggy and her late husband, Michael, purchased the Johnson House in 1977, with no previous experience in the restaurant business. She says her longevity likely has much to do with her hard work and passion for her business.

“I’ve been doing this for 39 years,” she says, “I just keep going.”

The STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK resembles another map - known to Pennsylvania anglers as the “Lost Stream Map.” The “Stream Map of Pennsylva-nia” was completed in 1965 after a thirty-year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. Mary Jane is survived by her husband of 57 years, John Lessord; her son Shawn (Lori) Lessord and daughter Jil-layne (David) Lessord; grandchildren, Kara and Magin Lessord and Royce and Rhett Breslawski. She is also survived by her sister, Helen E. Simpson. Predeceased by her parents, Earl and Helen Magin and her brother Carl Magin. Mary Jane was a member of the Brockport United Methodist Church and The Order of the Eastern Star, Mary Jane Holmes Chapter.

Her Funeral Service was held April 24 at the Fowler Funeral Home, Brockport. Interment at Lake View Cem-etery at the convenience of the family.

Jackie is survived by her lov-ing husband of 62 years, Paul; children, Kenneth (Kristin) Sherman, Sandra Smith, Lynda (Jim) Fleck, Sherri (Peter) Sweetnam, Patricia Kielty; brother, David (Nancy) Coats; sister, Sharon (John) Robinette; 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Survived by her sisters, Sylvia Graf, Beverly Graf and Pauline Hughes; nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Jean was a retiree of Kodak Park after 44 years of service.

Sur-vived by his loving wife of 56 years, Dolores; children, Lisa (Tom) Culhane, Cathie (Tom) Kunkel, Paul (Maria) Dinella, Ann Marie (Kevin) Clar, Mary Beth (Rick) Lee; grandchil-dren, Kim (Dan), Laura (Kyle), Paula, Cristina, Kenneth (Catie), Kyle, Elizabeth, Anna, Joseph and Julia; sister, Basilia P. Harbeson; brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Joseph was a WWII Army Veteran, a member of the Chili Memorial VFW Post 412 and the Ogden Zoning Board.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated April 23 at Holy Ghost Church. Interment, Holy Ghost Cemetery. Donations can be made to Highland Hospital Cardiology Department in his memory.

SPENCERPORT•Cleveland, Thomas J., died April 17, 2016 at age 70. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Cleveland; children, Kimberly (Jack) Healy, Jennifer (Brian) Hogan; step sons, Jeffrey Morien, Todd Morien; 11 grandchildren. Mr. Cleve-land was a Retired NYPD Officer and a Retired Sergeant Major with the US Army National Guard. He was a member of the Church of the Epiphany where he served in many capacities, including Church Warden.

C-C Solar Saints take top prize at solar cooker competitionOn April 8, ten teams from high schools

around the state competed in the 2016 Alfred State University (ASU) Tech Chal-lenge. The competition focused on design-ing and building an energy-efficient solar cooker, along with creating a business plan for production and marketing of the device. The winning team, from Church-ville-Chili High School, scored 353 out of a possible total 400 with their solar oven, which achieved a baking temperature of over 300 degrees.

The team members include Churchville-Chili sophomores, juniors and seniors: Jamar Bevel, Ericka Considine, Zach Diegart, Adam Dietrich, Skylar Pickard, Brandy Plante, Olivia Tamoutselis and Allison Woeller. The students were guided by Applied Geometry teacher Terry Fil-lion and Special Education teacher Micah Court, with assistance from Career and Technical teacher Kevin Doty and Instruc-tional Coach Andrea Lynch.

“I am so proud of our students and the 21st century learning that they have

experienced,” said Churchville-Chili High School Principal William Geraci. “I know that they will remember this project for a long time!”

The school’s solar challenge project, partially funded by a grant from ASU, integrated geometry, algebra, computer-aided design (CAD), graphics and business curriculum. All team members collaborated closely on research and working prototypes. They analyzed test data and used the re-sults to optimize their final solar cooker, which received high scores for design, construction and operation.

The strong business plan, headed up by student Adam Dietrich, led the competition with the highest scores, in part thanks to creative marketing graphics by Zach Di-egart and video advertising by Jamar Bevel (http://bit.ly/1Mu9GP0). From beginning to end, every team member made unique contributions to the project’s ultimate success.

Young Women of Distinction recipients announced

The Women’s Council, a Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce affiliate, announced the recipients of its 17th annual Young Women of Distinction Awards. The scholar-ship program supports the Women’s Council’s mission of empowering and recognizing women at every stage of their professional careers, and its belief that young women with promise today will become tomorrow’s leaders.

The recipients represent four categories of schools. Jenny Yau of Churchville-Chili Senior High School won in the Monroe County West category.

The recipients, selected from a group of twenty final-ists, received a $2,000 scholarship and an opportunity for a paid internship at an area company. All finalists receive the opportunity to participate in a young women’s leadership course.

Other local finalists included Michelle Garrett, Leanne Walker and Adrianna Wellin of Churchville-Chili High School.

Modeled after the ATHENA Award, the Young Women of Distinction program is designed to recognize high school seniors who have displayed outstanding leadership, academic excellence, and involvement in the nine-county Rochester region.
