Social Sport

Page 29: SUBU Arrivals Guide 2015:16

Varsity sport offers athletes the opportunity to excel and grow within our comprehensive sports programme.BU is currently ranked 28th in the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) league thanks to the successes of our varsity teams and individual athletes competing in a wide range of sports.

Our teams are supported by professional, semi-professional clubs and a dedicated team of coaches and BU staff, as well as a strength & conditioning programme. This enables our athletes to compete at high quality facilities as well as provide opportunities for local and national league competitions.

Varsity matches take place on Wednesday afternoons with individual sports running at various times throughout the year. Selection to the teams is based on a performance trial. Trials run from the end of September to mid-October. See pages 30-31 in this guide for details.

The Student Centre is your hub on Talbot Campus. It’s where you’ll find your Students’ Union, SUBU, including the four full time elected officers who are here to represent you.

On the ground floor you’ll find a great place to relax in the Ground Up Café, or take a chance to study, or meet friends, in a relaxing environment.

Head up the stairs and you’ll find the main SUBU office, including the Democracy, Equality and Representation teams and your elected Full-Time Officers. There’s also the SUBU Reception desk where any enquiries can be answered.

On floor two you’ll be able to learn more about the involvement opportunities offered by SUBU Activities. These include over one hundred clubs and societies, Bournemouth RAG and our volunteering team.

Interested in student media? You can see Nerve FM and Nerve Magazine in action on the fourth floor. Find them online too at www.nervemedia.org.uk

Global BUddies is a project which matches new students in small groups with a Global BUddy of a different nationality. We welcome applications from everyone – the more nationalities the better (that includes British students too!).

Global BUddies will help you to build a network of new friends from all over the world and develop important skills that your future employers will really value. Your Global BUddy will be a current student who will contact you by email before you arrive, help you settle in to life at BU and organise small social events, meetings and activities to help you get to know people when you get here.

Places are limited, so apply as early as possible if you would like to be involved. To find out more and to register, go to our website:

www.bournemouth.ac.uk/global-buddies

Cristiano SousaGlobal BUddy

My best global experience was when I came to university this past September and saw so many

people from all corners of the globe. All studying, working, playing together as if they always did

belong in the same group.

As a Global BUddy, I’m really looking forward to meeting new people from diverse cultures and learning about them, while also showing them

my culture.
