The key to getting the very best substitute teachers is as easy as
A,B,C!
What are the two WORST ways of getting substitute teachers?
Dear Substitute Teaching Administrator:
We have been researching substitute teaching since 1995 at Utah State University. We know the struggles of recruiting!
We have found the two WORST ways of attracting subs:
1) RAISING PAY. It doesn’t even work in the short-term. Studies at STEDI.org prove that offering more money is not the best way to keep and retain substitutes.
2) LOWERING EXPECTATIONS. If “breathing” is all you require from an applicant to substitute teach, no one will want to work for you.
So...what is the BEST way to get the BEST subs?
It’s simple: Raise the bar. Expect more from your substitute teachers. REQUIRE TRAINING. We have learned that initial AND ongoing training are the keys. Our research shows that training is the only common trait in successful recruiting and retaining efforts.
An open letter to substitute teaching administrators
We realize there are many substitute training options. Some are cheap, some in-house. But there is no other COLLEGE-LEVEL training course like our SubSkills Online TrainingTM OR our 9th edition Substitute Teacher Handbook.TM
Training will give your substitutes what you and they want:- Respect: substitute teaching is an honorable profession- Flexibility: the chance to teach when and where they want- Great hours: an ideal job, especially for people with kids- Impact: substitutes change lives and make lifelong friends- Professionalism: they work with other teaching pros- Recognition: they will get honored for a job well done
All because you cared enough to require training to attract the very best subs! Here is what you should do next: Step A: Choose online or printed training Step B: Give your new or returning subs options Step C: Choose five people to get SubSkills for free
