GROWING THE KNOWLEDGE BASE

To aid in operations efficiency andsafety, we use the Quest knowledgemanagement system for reporting,scheduling inspections, recording all QHSE incidents, performing riskanalyses, and tracking all aspects ofemployee QHSE training and develop-ment. In this Internet database, wecapture, review, and refine best prac-tices and lessons learned to ensurethat each of our clients gets the full benefit of every one of our subsea well control experiencesand successes.

All Schlumberger subsea well controlpersonnel participate in our world-wide LMS Learning ManagementSystem training program, and theyare commissioned to support ourclients only after meeting criteria

related to field seniority and famil-iarity with the hardware andoperational routines.

RELIABLE, VERSATILE SUBSEA CONTROL SYSTEMS

The SenTREE* subsea well controlsystems are versatile performers forcompletion and testing operations.Ranges of sizes, pressure and tem-perature ratings, and control systemconfigurations permit designs for avariety of subsea completion and well-testing applications, water depths,and wellbore conditions.

The SenTREE family of well controlsystems includes the SenTREE 7 and SenTREE HP subsea completiontest trees (SCTT) and the SenTREE 3subsea test tree (SSTT). The flexi-bility of these systems makes themideal for integration with any subseaconfiguration.

The SenTREE system’s standardizedmodules provide the flexibility tomeet the specific requirements ofeach project with minimal systemcustomization. SenTREE modularityreduces system and interface com-plexity, thus enhancing reliability andservice quality while increasingsafety and operations efficiency.

QUALIFIED THROUGH RIGOROUSTESTING

To ensure performance reliability,SenTREE well control systems arethoroughly tested and qualifiedthrough in-house factory accept-ance techniques and externaltesting facilities. SenTREE systemsand components are tested in a specially constructed hyperbaricchamber at the SchlumbergerReservoir Completion Center inRosharon, Texas, where pressurescan be created to match the subseaconditions for any job.

OUR EXPERIENCE RUNS DEEP

Building on many years of experi-ence providing subsea well control services, Schlumberger launchedthe SenTREE family of completionlanding string systems using directhydraulic control for operations fromanchored vessels. While times varydepending on water depth andumbilical length, the direct hydrauliccontrol system requires approxi-mately 120 s to close the SenTREEvalves and disconnect.

For operations from dynamicallypositioned vessels, Schlumbergerdeveloped another special controlsystem. In 2001, the Commander*system became the industry’s firstfast-acting control system to enablecompletion installation and flowbackoperations from dynamically posi-tioned vessels.

The fast-acting Commander controlsystem requires only 15 s to closethe SenTREE valves and disconnect.It is an intelligent, integrated controlsystem that requires one simple,small-diameter umbilical to operatethe SenTREE family and all associ-ated tubing hanger running tool andcompletion equipment functions. Acommunications system for controland telemetry feedback providesdata to enhance well operationsmanagement.

To date, Schlumberger has com-pleted hundreds of subsea wellcontrol jobs using SenTREE SCTTsystems with direct-hydraulic orfast-acting control systems.

A SMALLER IN-RISER CONTROLSYSTEM FOR THE SenTREE FAMILY

With the introduction of theSenTURIAN* fast-acting control system in 2007, Schlumberger rein-forced its technology leadershipposition for subsea completioninstallation and testing operations.Evolutionary upgrades have beenincorporated into the SenTURIANsystem based on the knowledge andexperience gained with the market-leading Commander control systems.

System features include simpleoperation and maintenance, alongwith modularity that enables cus-tomization to meet project-specificrequirements.

The SenTURIAN system design addsa smaller footprint and increased operational flexibility, requires lessinline offshore time for rig-up, simplifies hardware handling, andreduces hardware installation andrunning time. Additionally, it uses a form of direct electrohydraulic

control that lowers the number ofelectrical lines, thereby reducing the overall diameter of the umbilical cable.

This fast-acting system provides total control of the SenTREE family,tubing hanger running tool, and com-pletion equipment functions, alongwith monitoring to assist in manage-ment of the completion installationand flowback operations. It canclose all valves within the SenTREE system and unlatch in 15 s.

The SenTURIAN control system isengineered for use with all SenTREEsystems, in water depths rangingfrom shallow to 4,572 m [15,000 ft],for completion installation and flow-back operations from dynamicallypositioned vessels. The simplicity ofthe SenTURIAN control system alsosuits it for some applications fromanchored vessels.

The SenTURIAN control system isdesigned in accordance with reliabil-ity specifications IEC 61508, SIL 2 forsafety-related systems. This designapproach sets a new industry bench-mark for reliability of in-riser subseawell control systems.

Like the Commander system, theSenTURIAN fast-acting control systemcan close all the valves in a SenTREE system and unlatch in 15 s.
