I am proud to present to you the 2019/20 season full of your favorite classical masterworks and inspiring new pieces in our Barnett & Company Masterworks Series. I am pleased to introduce some exciting artists to Chattanooga, including Steven Lin on Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, Thomas Landschoot on Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1, and String Theory’s Gloria Chien on Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2. You will also hear beloved masterworks such as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, and Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe No. 2. This season, we are featuring a number of female composers: Lili Boulanger, Wang Jie, and Gabriela Lena Frank, to name a few.

For the Chamber Series, we are welcoming guest conductor David Rahbee to conduct works by Franz Joseph Haydn. This series will also feature the CSO Chorus, our Concertmaster Holly Mulcahy, and two of the CSO clarinetists, Robert West and Steve Tonkinson.

I look forward to sharing these exciting, diverse, and beautiful works with you this season.

According to some, The Miraculous Mandarin embodies the unconquerable power of human aspiration and tells one of classical music’s most sordid tales through dramatic strings, an iconic waltz, and expressive winds. The evening’s concert also includes Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major - a work known for showcasing the many facets of the cello.

POPS SERIESWelcome to our 2019/20 Pops season at the CSO! And I have only two words: BERNADETTE PETERS! The multi-Tony and multi-Drama Desk Award winning singer, actress, dancer and flat-out brilliant entertainer leads the way with her clever, musical, nostalgic, sexy and often-hilarious symphony show. She’s one of a kind, and you will NOT want to miss the chance to see her live and on-stage at the Tivoli!

The rest of the season sparkles, too! Michael Cavanaugh, hand-picked by Billy Joel to play the lead in his musical, Movin’ Out!, is wonderful in the entire Rock and Roll Songbook, a specialist in the music of Billy Joel (of course), and a great pianist and vocalist, with an easy style and great energy. His show will delight the entire family.

Speaking of family, our Home for the Holidays pops is designed for children of all ages. And Big Band Fever may be the most inter-generational program we present. It’s the great American invention, swing! And the Tivoli is set up for dancing, so come along and dance, or just sit and enjoy the great legacy of such bands as Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and many more. Valerie Duke returns as our special guest vocalist.

Finally, it’s LIGHTS! CAMERA! POPS! - my tribute to music written for the movies. We start at the

beginning of the ‘Hollywood Sound” in the 1930s, with Gone With the Wind (Max Steiner) and

Captain Blood (Erich Wolfgang Korngold), through the 50s and 60s with Bridge on

the River Kwai (Kenneth Alford) and To Kill A Mockingbird (Elmer Bernstein), to

the present day, with James Horner, Michael Giacchino and (of course)

John Williams.

We hope you enjoy this season with the CSO, and we appreciate each of you for your support.
