Directed by Anthony Maras | Australia | In English | 122 mins | MA15+WORLD PREMIERE: TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Award-winning Australian director Anthony Maras and co-writer John Collee (Master and Commander), explore the dramatic real-life events that occurred inMumbai’s upscale Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in 2008. The film takes us into every corner of the grand hotel as it follows the relentless advance of the cold-blooded terrorists, and the painful decisions that traumatised staff and patrons were forced to make as they struggled to survive the three-day siege. Topline performances round out this gripping docu-drama including Academy nominee Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire) and Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name). Maras’s featuredebut resonates with a quiet compassion that cleverly handles class complexity and the impact of a fateful event across all races in equal measure.

“A film of quiet compassion and sober heroism.” – SCREEN INTERNATIONAL

Special filmmaker guest will join us for a Q&A following the screening.

The unbelievable-but-true tale of three strangers who discover they’re identical triplets separated at birth, with one of the most surprising twists you’ll ever encounter. Bobby, Eddy and David didn’t just look alike; they shared mannerisms and a matching taste in women. The teenage trio’s astonishing story hits the news headlines, and life for the triplets turns into a media circus—with trips to Studio 54 and even a movie cameo. Meanwhile, investigative journalist Lawrence Wright uncovers a secret story, which turns out to have sinister implications for the three men. This totally engrossing documentary, a hit on the festival circuit, is truly stranger-than-fiction—no spoilers here, you just have to see it to believe it!

“The knockout documentary Three Identical Strangers begins as a goofy, believe-it-or-not tabloid story”

Directed by Paweł Pawlikowski | Poland, UK, France | In Polish and French with English subtitles | 84 mins | M

WINNER: BEST DIRECTOR PRIZE, CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2018

NOMINATED: BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM, BEST DIRECTOR, ACADEMY AWARDS 2019

The tempestuous love story of two musicians who meet in the ruins of post-war Poland: based on the stormy relationship of Pawlikowski’s own parents. Wiktor and Zula are hopelessly mismatched and yet fatefully drawn to each other. Set against the background of the Cold War in 1950s Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, the couple are separated by politics, character flaws and twists of fate—an impossible love story in impossible times. Brilliantly acted and visually stunning in black and white, Cold War is one of the best films of the year.

“A thrilling exploration of romantic disappointment with a killer soundtrack.”

SAT 16 MAR 5:00 PM

Directed by Benedikt Erlingsson | France, Iceland, Ukraine | In Icelandic with English subtitles | 100 mins | 15+

WINNER: CANNES CRITICS’ WEEK AWARD, CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2018

SELECTED: SFF 2018

Halla, a warm-hearted choir leader, lives a seemingly idyllic life in the beautiful Icelandic Highlands, but secretly she’s a passionate, hardcore environmental activist. Armed with her bow and arrow, deftly wielded, Halla sabotages the industry that threatens her beloved landscape. As she embarks on her boldest sabotage plan yet, the stakes are raised when she finds out that she is on the verge of realising a long-cherished dream. Director Erlingsson (Of Horses and Men) takes a wildly daring approach, bringing musical, comedic and social justice elements together in a visually lush feature. This gloriously funny film is sure to be one of the year’s most memorable.

“Offbeat, poignant and visually exquisite.”

– THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

SAT 16 MAR 8:00 PM

Directed by Hirokazu Kore-Eda | Japan | In Japanese with English subtitles | 121 mins | M

WINNER: PALME D’OR, CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2018

NOMINATED: BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM, ACADEMY AWARDS 2019

Hirokazu Kore-Eda’s (After Life, Nobody Knows) latest masterpiece is about an impoverished group of affectionate misfits who commit petty crimes to survive. Following one of their regular, carefully choreographed shoplifting sessions, the Fagin-like Osamu and his young accomplice come across a little girl shivering in the cold. Initially reluctant, the ‘family’ takes the girl in when they discover the neglect she’s suffered. In each other and in their simple life they find comfort and happiness. A film built on beautifully observed and richly resonant moments, Shoplifters is at once delightful, funny and heartbreaking, and the deserving winner of the biggest prize in world cinema.

“A complex, subtle, mysterious film that builds to the most extraordinary surprise ending.”

– THE GUARDIAN

SUN 17 MARCH 11.00AM

Directed by Julian Schnabel | Switzerland, UK, France, USA, Ireland | French and English with English subtitles | 110 mins | PG

WINNER: GREEN DROP AWARD, VENICE FILM FESTIVAL 2018

NOMINATED: BEST ACTOR, ACADEMY AWARDS 2019 Academy heavy weights, director Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) and actor Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project, The Grand Budapest Hotel) come together to present an almost surreal view of the final months in the life of the extraordinarily talented yet tormented artist Vincent Van Gogh (Dafoe). With the tireless support of his brother (Rupert Friend, The Death of Stalin), and his relationship with fellow artist Gaugin (a stellar Oscar Isaac, X-Men), the film perfectly captures the needy complexities of this beleaguered genius.

“There have been plenty of films about the tortured Dutch artist, but none as evocative and affecting as Julian Schnabel’s latest, starring Willem Dafoe.”

– ROLLING STONE

SUN 17 MAR 1:30 PM

Directed by Gustav Möller | Denmark | In Danish with English subtitles | 85 mins | M

WINNER: WORLD CINEMA AUDIENCE AWARD, SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2018

SELECTED: BEST ACTOR, GOLDEN GLOBE 2019

A sympathetic ear and willingness to help is what you expect when you dial 000. That’s not what happens when Asger Holm (Jakob Cedergren) answers. “It’s your own fault, isn’t it?” he tells one caller. But this demoted cop with a bad attitude springs attentively to life after receiving a call from Iben, a distressed mother who claims she’s been kidnapped by her violent ex-husband. With a precision-tooled screenplay and flawless central performance, this Scandi crime drama, Möller’s mightily impressive first feature, delivers breath-quickening suspense without ever leaving the claustrophobic confines of Asger’s office.

SUN 17 MAR 4:30 PM

Directed by Alice Rohrwacher | Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany | In Italian with English subtitles | 125 mins | M

WINNER: BEST SCREENPLAY, CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2018

In her latest award-winning feature Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher (The Wonders) has created an extraordinarily beautiful and inventive fable that bends the rules of time and imagination. Newcomer Adriano Tardiolo gives an impressive performance as angelic innocent Lazzaro, a peasant who supports his fellow villagers in any way possible. The naive and hardworking youth unwittingly becomes a pawn to a rebellious young nobleman; tragedy and time-travel ensue. Balancing the fine line between fact and fable, contemporary and traditional, Rohrwacher’s feature weaves an enchanting yet mystical spell.

“Nothing much makes sense until a stunning mid-film pivot shakes time and space and snaps it all together, its world emerging from the disturbance as senseless again — but in a completely different, all too recognizable way.”

– VARIETY

SUN 17 MAR 7:30 PM

Directed by Nadine Labaki | Lebanon, USA | In Arabic and Amharic with English subtitles | 121 mins | M

WINNER: GRAND JURY PRIZE, CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2018

NOMINATED: BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM, ACADEMY AWARDS 2019

Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival 2018, Nadine Labaki’sfunny yet tough feature film tells the genuinely moving story of a troubled 12-year-old Lebanese boy. Zain is so incensed by his impoverished parents’ behaviour that he runs away from home. On Beirut’s streets, he encounters an Ethiopian refugee and her baby, and ends up babysitting the tiny child. After a series of mishaps and misdeeds, Zain ends up suing his parents for ‘giving him life’. The young non-professional actors, whose roles are not that far removed from their own lives, are outstanding in this must-see award winner.

“One of the best. Love the variety and high standard.”

“We look forward to the festival returning year after year.”

“Really enjoy the film festival even though I have to travel. Good excuse to stay in town. Please keep coming.”
