Enrollment Management UpdateJuly 2014

On behalf of the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management, I want to express our sincere gratitude for the ode of faith the university leadership has entrusted in us to carry out one of our most important functions - to ensure that our valued students are successfully admitted, and meaningfully matriculate through their respective degree programs. The committed employees of our Division acted quickly to assess the effectiveness, efficiency, and accountability of existing divisional operations, and are actively engaged in an ongoing process to identify contemporary strategies to improve the productivity of our Enrollment Management units. The glimpse of our Pathway to Prominence Plan submitted today provides an abbreviated assessment of the unique challenges facing the Division, and articulates a pathway forward, derived from the shared input of our University’s stakeholders.

Of course, our work is not yet finished. In the coming weeks, I will work tirelessly to engage all members of the University Community to solidify our strategic approach to addressing our historic and modern challenges. Rest assured that we will not rest until we have a concrete plan to return Southern University to a Pathway to Prominence.

Thank you for your unwavering support, and we look forward to presenting a comprehensive proposal in the coming weeks.

Yours in the Gold and Blue,

Brandon K. Dumas, Ph.D.Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management

Where Do We Go From Here?

Interim leadership has led the Office of Admissions & Recruitment since the spring semester of 2013. Realizing the importance of having permanent leadership in place with a clearly articulated vision to guide our recruitment efforts, the position was posted on July 7, 2014 through July 16, 2014 for qualified applicants to apply. Since that time, the Office of Human Resources notified the Division’s leadership that the System President directed them to remove this vacancy announcement, among others deemed critical by Student Affairs & Enrollment Management, from the advertising website.Despite the abrupt removal of the posting, 17 applications have been received to date.

Previously, a search was conducted by the Office of Academic Affairs in November 2013 but for unknown reasons, a recommendation was never forwarded to the campus leadership for consideration after the work of the search committee culminated. A Search Committee has been reestablished. Since the removal of the advertisement, the Chair of the Search Committee has been instructed to advise individuals who express interest in applying to continue monitoring the website.

The composition of the Search Committee is below:

1. Mrs. Tracie A. Abraham – Chair (former Director of Admissions & Recruitment)2. Dr. Kingsley Esedo – Faculty Representative3. Mrs. Heather Freeman – Staff Representative4. Mr. Nicholas Harris – Student Representative5. Ms. Shonte Hogans – Departmental Representative

PERMANENT LEADERSHIP

TEMPORARY LEADERSHIP IN PLACE

Mr. Anthony T. Jackson, Asst. Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, and the preferred candidate in the most recent search process for Director of Admissions & Recruitment, has assumed responsibility for the day-to-day management of the department with no additional compensation until permanent leadership can be identified.

(Pathway to Prominence)

10 Pathway to Prominence

The last assessment by an external, independent entity was conducted in 2002 and led to creation of a newly formed Division of Enrollment Management at SUBR. We realize that since that time, draconian changes have affected the overall landscape of higher education globally. For those reasons, we will be reengaging Noel-Levitz to assess our current administrative and operational structure in hopes to receive recommendations that will guide us along the Pathway to Prominence as it relates to our student service and enrollment management functions.

A recognized leader in higher education consulting, Noel-Levitz is committed to helping institutions meet their goals for enrollment and student success. During their 40-year history, more than 3,000 campus clients throughout North America and beyond have invited Noel-Levitz to collaborate with them. Southern University and A&M College has partnered with Noel-Levitz in the past.

12 Pathway to Prominence

As we embark upon the process of completing the SACS Interim Report coupled with a desire to create a culture of assessment and data driven decision-making, this position is critical to ensure that we use themost relevant recruitment methods when allocating our limited resources and utilize the most efficient and effective recruitment methods that are consistent with best practices.

ENGAGING EXISTING UNIVERSITY PERSONNEL TO ASSUME ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES AS ASSESSMENT COORDINATOR FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS & ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT

We endeavor to assemble a team of individuals who collaboratively develop and implement integrated marketing communications for the offices within the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management. The team will consist of a collaborative team of professional and student marketers who strive for amazing solutions in order to clearly communicate events, opportunities, and promotions to the University community in an effort to enhance our recruitment and retention efforts.
