Annexure III

Best Practice-1

1 Title of the Practice Mentoring System / Counseling System for Students

2 Goal The mentor plays the role of a personal mentor for the student in all matters.

For the institute, the mentor is the first reference for all matters concerning

any specific student. The mentor guides the student at every step of their stay

at the institute to be successful at whatever the student takes up. The mentor

personally ensures that the student is aware of all the resources available to

the student during their course of study at the institute. The mentor is

available to counsel the student in any matter of concern apart from the

curriculum also.

3 The Context Students undergo various problems of stress. Statistics reveal increasing

number of suicides and dropouts. Mentoring is required for students to

achieve emotional stability and to promote clarity in thinking and decision

making for overall progress. The students then meet their mentors before

every internal assessment to update them on their progress in every course;

The students might also choose to meet their mentor more regularly for

advice regarding matters which may be extra- or co-curricular or otherwise.

In addition, the mentor might also choose to see any student with more

regularity when their academic performance concerns the mentor.

4 The Practice The practice is that of creating an efficient mentor-ward system. Each

teacher is assigned 15-20 students. They meet at least once a week to

discuss, clarify and primarily to share various problems which may be

personal, domestic, academic, etc. The teacher is equipped with all the

necessary information about his/her wards on a file. The teacher involves

local guardians and parents as well, whenever necessary.

5 Evidence of success Minimized dropouts through personal counseling. It is needless to say that a

mentor gets the job satisfaction. Evidence of success of the practice includes

better results in the examinations, more regular attendance, increased

participation in co-curricular activities, better discipline on campus and

respectful relationship between teachers and students.

6 Problems

Encountered

and Resources

Required

The depression that a small percentage of students went through was too

critical for us to handle. This practice requires well-committed teaching staff

who have the desire to help students beyond teaching hours.

7 Notes (Optional) Minimized dropouts through personal counselling, and helped students to

relieve all their tension and worries.

Page 41: Submitted to - nsrit.edu.innsrit.edu.in/admin/img/cms/IQAC-AQAR First Report... · 1.8 AQAR for the year (for example 2010-11) 1.9 Details of the previous year’s AQAR submitted

NADIMPALLI SATYANARAYANA RAJU INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Page 41

Annexure III

Best Practice-2

1 Title of the Practice Emphasis on practical skill stand value added courses and training to

students

2 Goal To learn by doing. To supplement curriculum knowledge through value-

added courses. To expose students to industry culture and practices

3 The Context This skill-based education can make the transition between academic

work environment and life easy. It is not only boosts students’

employment prospects but also the confidence level among students to

meet the real life challenges. However, the effectiveness of such

programs critically depends upon thorough understanding of industry

needs and skill requirements and developing programs, in collaboration

with the concerned industry sectors, in order to fill the gap.

4 The Practice Prepare a clear mapping of the curricular gaps with the proposed skill

development program. It created an excellent infrastructure in terms of

spacious labs, equipped with State-ofthe-art facilities constantly

renewing the obsolescence, trained faculty, created a culture by suitably

structuring curriculum and modifying time tables. The mini projects and

main projects have been strengthened by conducting hardware expo.

5 Evidence of success This additional input ensures that good numbers of students are placed in

various companies. Some students enrolled themselves into higher

education in prestigious institutions in India and abroad. Introduction of

emphasis on practical skills resulted in changes within the students by

increasing knowledge, developing skills and/or positively influencing

attitudes, values and judgment resulted in overall improvement in pass

percentage of academically weak students. Increased R&D capacity

resulting in significant improvement in research proposals.

6 Problems Encountered

and Resources required

Additional resources both in time and effort are needed. The resources

include experts with individual background necessary software and

hardware knowledge and above all judicious synchronization with the

existing academic curriculum.

7 Notes (Optional) This may help the young understand the societal problems better while

interacting with other students and teachers. Search for effective

technological solutions for the up-liftment in various aspects and the

programmes effectively, executes the concept-campus to community.
