specialists to manage beauty parlors, shops, and full-service

or specialized salons and to prepare for licensure as

professional salon owners and operators.

Planning of the salon requires a

great deal of thought, because once

you have put in so much money in

furnishing it, you can not change it

immediately or till it is ready to be

renovated.

Salon Planning Factors

For the accommodation, rectangular rooms are better than square rooms.

Open type of stations for hair and nail services, and closed type cabins for beauty services like facial and waxing are prepared.

Some salons are mainly for hair and other only for beauty and some salons known as full service salons.

Number of machines should be considered at the planning stage.

The number of workers should be considered along with their required field of work.

Partnership

Two or more people join up to setup of place and share the responsibilities, profits and loss.

Different ways:

• Both or all partners put up an equal share of finance and work

• One professional, and the other management expert get together to run a place. The finance can be decided mutually.

• One partner put up the finance and the premises and the other partner does the work. The profits are shared.

The resources and skill of two people can be put together and profit and losses are shared.

Franchise Salons

A franchise salon is operated by an individual, under the guidelines laid down by the parent company.

It helps to build up a business under the banner of a well known company.

The individual is expected to pay some cash down payment and a percentage on the sales.

The products are advertised by the parent company and are usually well known. The individual does not have to struggle to make herself known as soon as she set up business.

Corporation

It is set up under state laws and share of money are put up by various subscribers.

This type of ownership is not common in India, as yet.

This type of business has a big advantage in the availability of large sums of money and a business can be set up in a style.

The financers appoint a board of directors who run the business

In case of loss, individual losses are limited compared to the individual and partnership losses.

A manager is appointed for the salon who looks after the running business

Lease Ownership

Sometimes the owner wants a break, either because of

old age or requiring time for further training and puts up

a salon on lease hire.

The individual does not have to put the cash for setting

up the salon immediately.

For a professional who has just finished training or has

no standing as yet, this is a good way for setting up.

Lease should be carefully examined by the legal expert,

before it is signed.

Record KeepingFor the well managed salons, record play an important role.

If the owner wants to know about his business regarding

the profit or the loss, the cliental has increased or

decreased or how his salon is working, it is only from the

records.

This should be recorded everyday, income consist of charges for the services and sale made of products, expenses are of products and the material, as well as, wages and monthly bills.

Payments maybe made by cheques or by cash.

Both the records should be kept and checked every month to see if you are making an overall profit or loss.

It is worth checking if a particular service or department is making more or less profit.

Records always help in comparison to spend or control expenses in a right way.

Appointment Records

A regular register should be maintained for recording the appointments and cancellations.

If appointment has been made in advance, from more than a week, it is advisable to ring up the client to confirm the same.

It gives a margin for the client to arrive a little late or the service to go a little longer than expected.

Some operators make minute to minute appointments and are always late, which gives wrong impression and the later clients have to wait for their turns.

If the particular operator falls sick or is absent for unavoidable reason, it is necessary to call up the client and inform her about the problem, before she came and doesn’t frustration of not getting her desired operator.

Record cards for your regular clients are a very helpful aid in many ways-

• The client name

• The address

• Telephone number

• The services she asked for

• Charges made

• Results obtained

• Complaints/Suggestions

If the client does not like a particular product or service, you will be warned about not repeating it

Most of the salons are full-service salon which are offering a variety of services. On the other hand some salons are like that they offer either only hair or only beauty services.

Most salons have the following services :-

• Hair cutting and styling, both long and short hair

• Hair coloring and henna

• Puming and straightening

• Head massage, hair conditioning, hair spa

• Facials, manual and electrical

• Bleaching of hair and skin

• Eyebrow shaping ,threading and hair removal treatments

• Makeup services

There are two methods of working :-

• By appointment method-

this type of services enquire limited workers and limited space.

One can plan ahead and take on only as much as possible to work with.

Appointments are made in advance and there is a scope for planning and getting

the things ready in advance when required .

A telephone is a must for booking appointments and cancellation.

• First come first serve-

Open types of service station are provided for most hair service only. A few closed booths are kept for services that requires privacy like facial and waxing.

All equipments and material have to be kept ready at all the times because you cannot waste time in getting the things ready when there is a line of clients waiting.

A large waiting area should be provided for the clients and the people who accompany them.

The receptionist should keep the record in order of there arrival and guide them to the operator and the area of the particular service.

Clients should be informed about the approximate time they might have to wait.

Professional ethics as an employer, employee,

co-worker and operator

People working for an organization are the one who make it a success

or a failure. in a organization people have to work together and while

working together they will make it a successful business.

when all the members start thinking only of themselves there is a

tension in the atmosphere and clients may also get the sense of it.

if you were the owner of salon you should guide your employees to

work together and uphold the respect and values of the profession.

Some of the guidelines for the for proper behavior are given above.

1. As an employer

The workers you hire have only agreed to work for you on a wages.

You do not own them, if you treat them with respect and affection, consider there

problems in a human manner .they give you respect and are loyal to you.

Do not try and squeeze extra workout of your employees and pay them less.

If you do not like a particular trait behavior in your employer rather than shouting

at her, call her and discuss it with her in private.

Never shout or criticize the worker in front of clients ands other workers.

Encourage and arrange for further eruptional programme among your employees to

keep a good standard of work.

Do not cheat your clients by selling them bad stuff and services when people know

that you are honest and trustworthy they believe you.

Do not try to hold back on employee by force or dissatisfied worked is not good

for you and your business.

2. As an employee

To be able to work well you must have respect for the place and the employer you work

for.

You must be loyal to your employer.

If you find a problem or solution which can be improved and be helpful in improved and

be helpful in improving the service, go and suggest it to the employer and help to

improve it rather than just sitting back and criticizing it.

Do not discuss and criticize the salon and employer infront of clients.

You must uphold the prestige of the salon you are working for.

In case of difficult times and emergencies then you must put extra effort without

cribbing. It helps to develop the feeling of team work and the employer will always ne

grateful to you for helping her in the time of need .

3. As an co-worker

When a new worker joins in, take her in group rather than leaving her out as a stranger.

Everyone goes through this situation and you should remember how uncomfortable the

situation is from your own past experience.

Be friendly with the co-workers and try to work as a team rather than against each

other.

Do not carry tales to the employer and discuss one worker with the other.

Everyone comes from the different background and there are different levels of worker

in the salon.

Always work in a team and develop the feeling of one team then this type of atmosphere

is very peaceful and positive.

Do not discus your co-worker behavior with your clients.

Do not try to snatch away each other clients. If your co-worker asks you to help , then

without and hesitation you may do so.

4.As an operator

The first and foremost requirement of a good operator is that she should be qualified

and have the required amount of skill in the work she is doing, little or less knowledge

can be dangerous for your work.

As an operator you must be neat and clean in your personal habits and extent the habit

of keeping the place and implements clean.

Be punctual and try to keep the appointments you had taken.

Be well groomed and well dressed clients take you to the image of the work you are

going to produced.

Speak softly and listen the problems of other patiently.

Do not discuss your salary, you work problem and do not discuss your employer or co-

worker behavior with your clients.

To improve your skills and quality of your work you must in touch of new products and

with new trends.
