Sean Williams 2/27/2014

2/5/2014 2/27/2014

Morrison Hershfield has reviewed this submittal substitution request with the following comments:

Both the proposed Grace Perm-A-Barrier VPO and the Henry AirBloc 33 product specified are a vapor permeableacrylic membranes applied as an acrylic emulsion.

The Grace membrane dries to 45 mils whereas the Henry AirBloc 33 has a dry thickness of min. 55 mils. Thinnermembranes typically have lower puncture resistance and less ability to self-seal around fasteners, which mayincrease the risk of water penetration.

Grace Perm-A-Barrier VPO has a water vapor permeance of 11.2 perms per ASTM E96 procedure B (water methodat 73.4 deg F) while Henry AirBloc 33 tests to 11.6 perms per ASTM E96 procedure E (dessicant method at 100 degF). Neither test method replicates real-world condition, but they are both accepted methods.

Tested elongation for Grace VPO is 300% while Henry AirBloc 33 is 200%. Tested tensile strength for Grace VPO is300 psi while Henry AirBloc 33 is125 psi.

Both products have similar application temperature requirements and similar coverage rates.

Grace Perma-A-Barrier Aluminum Flashing is the proposed metal-faced self-adhered membrane (SAM) in lieu ofHenry Foilskin. The Grace product is 40 mils and has a minimum puncture rating of 80 lbf as opposed to Henry's 40mils and 40 lbf. The tensile strength of the Grace membrane tested at 600 psi as opposed to the Henry Blueskin at900 psi; however, the Grace film tensile strength tested at 4000 psi as opposed to the Henry Blueskin at 2812 psi. The minimum puncture force for the Grace product was also higher at 80 lbf as opposed to 40 lbf.

No data was submitted for the Grace Perm-A-Barrier VPS self-adhered vapor permeable membrane; this product isassumed to be a substitution for the Henry Blueskin Breather product (see recommendation below).

In MH's opinion the Grace Perm-A-Barrier VPO and accessories is an acceptable system substitution with theunderstanding that thinner membranes typically have lower puncture resistance and less ability to self-seal aroundfasteners. Installing the products per the manufacturer's installation instructions should mitigate this potentially higherrisk of water penetration.

RECOMMENDATION:1. Verify and submit comparable data sheets for the vapor permeable product.2. Accept substitution request; however, Architect to review and approve for conformance with design intent.

InstallationSafetyRefer to product label and Material SafetyData Sheet before use. All users shouldacquaint themselves with this informationprior to working with the material. Carefullyread detailed precaution statements on theproduct labels and MSDS before use.MSDSs can be obtained from our web siteat graceconstruction.com or by contacting ustoll free at 866-333-3SBM (3726).Surface PreparationAll surfaces must be sound and free fromspalled areas, loose aggregate, loose nails orscrews, sharp protrusions or other matter thatwill hinder the adhesion or regularity of themembrane installation. The surface must alsobe free from frost, dirt, grease, oil or other

contaminants. Clean loose dust and dirt fromthe surface by brushing or wiping with aclean, dry cloth.Concrete and Other MonolithicCementitious SurfacesSurface irregularities greater than 1/4 in.(6 mm) across and/or 1/8 in. (3 mm) in depthshould be pre-treated with Bituthene LiquidMembrane or repaired with a lean mortar mixor nonshrinking grout. Remove concrete formlines and any high spots greater than 1/8 in.(3 mm) in height to ensure uniform surface. On highly dusty or porous substrates it maybe necessary to apply a scratch coat of Perm-A-Barrier VPO prior to spraying to fullthickness.Perm-A-Barrier VPO may be applied to green(minimum 3 day cure time) concrete or overdamp to-touch surfaces Remove any visiblewater prior to application.Concrete Masonry Units (CMU)The CMU surface should be smooth and freefrom projections. Strike all mortar joints fulland flush to the face of the concrete block.Fill all voids and holes, particularly at themortar joints, with a lean mortar mix ornonshrinking grout. Alternatively, a pargecoat (typically one part cement to three partssand) may be used over the entire surface.Exterior Sheathing PanelsPerm-A-Barrier VPO may be applied directlyto exterior sheathing panels such as exteriordrywall, plywood and oriented strand board(OSB) and glass faced wall boards, for furtherinformation refer to Technical Letter 2,Substrate Preparation for Application ofPerm-A-Barrier Products to Glass-Mat FacedGypsum Sheathing. To avoid deflection at thepanel joints, fasten corners and edges withappropriate screws. Fasteners should bedriven flush with the panel surface (notcounter sunk) and into the framing system inaccordance with the manufacturers recom-mendations. Tape the sheathing board buttjoints using either reinforced or mesh-stylewallboard tape, min. 2 in. (50 mm) wide (i.e.FibaTape® brand products). When using mesh-style wallboard tape, ensure that all holes in the tape are filled withPerm-A-Barrier VPO. Gaps greater than ¼ in.(6 mm) should be filled with a compatiblesealant, allowing sufficient time for thesealant to fully cure before application ofthe tape and Perm-A-Barrier VPO. Refer toTechnical Letter # 13 for compatible sealantsand caulks. Alley 111

Coverage RatesPerm-A-Barrier VPO is typically applied at aminimum thickness of 90 mils wet. The theo-retical coverage rate (not including waste) at athickness of 90 mils is approximately18 ft2/gal to reach a 45 mil dry thickness.Coverage may vary depending on applicationtechnique and may be reduced over rough anduneven substrates. The applicator goal shouldbe a continuous membrane at a thickness of90 mils wet, adjust coverage rate accordingly.DryingPerm-A-Barrier VPO is dry to touch and canbe overcoated within 4 hours under normalconditions (50% R.H, 68°F). Perm-A-BarrierVPO dries through in 24 hours at normalconditions (50% R.H, 68°F). Drying and skin-ning times may vary depending ontemperature, humidity and surface conditions.Application of Insulation and FinishesPerm-A-Barrier VPO is not suitable forpermanent weather exposure. Insulationboards may be installed after Perm-A-BarrierVPO has fully cured. If the insulation cannotbe applied within 6 months of the Perm-A-Barrier VPO application, some form oftemporary protection (such as tarpaulins)should be used to protect the product from theeffects of sunlight. Installation of insulationboards can be accomplished by using compat-ible mechanical fasteners or, solvent freeinsulation adhesive.CleaningTools and equipment are most effectivelycleaned using a damp cloth and removingmaterial as soon as possible to prevent curingon tools and equipment. For short shutdownperiods, material can remain in the lines andequipment. Material should not be left in thelines for any period of time if temperaturesare expected to drop below 40°F (4°C). Forlong-term storage, thoroughly flush the entiresystem with water and then purge with Procor®Flushing Oil. Good preventative maintenancewill lengthen the life of the pumps.Storage and HandlingPerm-A-Barrier VPO is available in 55 gallondrums and 5 gallon pails. Perm-A-BarrierVPO should be stored under cover in originalsealed containers above 40°F (4°C) andbelow 100°F (38°C).The shelf life is 9 months in unopened containers.Store opened containers with plastic protec-tive liner covering the material.

DetailingDetailing should be completed prior to apply-ing the full coverage of Perm-A-Barrier VPO.The field application should completely coverthe detail areas to provide a continuousmembrane. For a complete description and instructionson individual details, consult the separatedetail sheets found on our web site atgraceconstruction.com.Transitions to beams, columns, window anddoorframes, etc. should be made with a strip ofPerm-A-Barrier Detail Membrane, Perm-A-Barrier Aluminum Flashing or Perm-A-Barrier Wall Flashing. Only Perm-A-BarrierWall Flashing can be used for through wallflashing applications or under masonry units.Optimum adhesion will be achieved when themembrane or flashing is lapped onto thecured Perm-A-Barrier VPO. As soon as thePerm-A-Barrier VPO is cured (approximately24 hrs after application at 50% R.H, 68°F), itis ready to accept the tape.Gaps around penetrations should be caulkedwith a compatible sealant. Consult TechnicalLetter 13, Adhesion Compatibility of Perm-A-Barrier VP LT and VPO with Sealants andCaulks or contact your Grace ConstructionProducts representative.Membrane ApplicationPerm-A-Barrier VPO can be installed througha spray application. Perm-A-Barrier VPOmay be applied by roller or brush, howeverspray application is the preferred method. Ifapplying Perm-A-Barrier VPO by roller orbrush, multiple material passes may be neces-sary to ensure that the required wet thicknessis achieved.Contact Grace for further details of localapplicators, application techniques and sprayequipment.Application Temperature—In sprayapplications, Perm-A-Barrier VPO may beapplied at temperatures as low as 40°F (4°C).Perm-A-Barrier VPO is not recommended foruse when cold and/or damp conditions existfor prolonged periods. Perm-A-Barrier VPOis a water-based material. As with all water-based materials, it is subject to freezing attemperatures below 32°F (0°C).Thickness ControlApplication thickness is controlled in verticalapplications by marking the area and spot-checking the thickness with a wet filmthickness gauge. Swipe marks on the surfaceof the Perm-A-Barrier VPO are acceptable aslong as the minimum thickness is maintained.
