Source: Census of India 2001 b) Details of the project focussing on field demonstration/extension oriented
activities with little R&D component, if needed.
The people of many villages who are under poverty line or weaker sections
are mostly rearing low performing desi birds in backyard system. They lay around 80-
100 eggs/bird/year, which is very meager to meet out their economic livelihood. If,
the rural SC/ST women and weaker sections are provided with high performing Desi
birds, they will get around 150-180 eggs/year from one bird. The backyard system of
rearing is also slowly changing to commercial method of bird rearing which earns
more money and gives more profit to the weaker sections. Hence, the people will be
educated and motivated to follow commercial method of Desi bird rearing for higher
income generation. In Erode, people are mainly focusing on desi bird rearing and
main constraint to them is non availability of sufficient breeder and hatcheries unit.
They are also lacking proper training and knowledge on these aspects.
c) Details indicating how the project will benefit the target population.
Erode district is known for everything and lands are highly fertile for
agriculture and livestock oriented programmes. The SC/ST Women in the age group
of above 40 are mostly illiterate. Most of them are engaged in paddy field work from
August to February. During summer, they look after other works such as building and
road construction, irrigation channel, repairing works, etc., Most of the dry land
available in this district are being occupied by textile companies and part of the
weaker community working in these companies. Income generation by working in
industry alone is not sufficient to maintain their children’s health and education. In the
current global trend without money nothing is possible. The ST women are mostly
living in Talavadi, Timbam, Aasanoor and burgur areas. Their economic and social
status also very poor. If they are provided with desi chicks, their income generation
level is enhanced which meet outs their expenses. Definitely, this project will be
useful and benefits the target populations.
d) Objectives (covering description of the problem and its solution).
1. To introduce high performing TANUVAS Nandhanam colour broiler II birds
among SC/ST women and weaker sections instead to replace the low
performers.
2. To vaccinate the birds aganist Ranikhet disease with pellet vaccine, produced
by Department of Veterinary Microbiology, Madras Veterinary College,
Chennai.
3. To train the farmers on scientific management of desi birds, since most of the
people are rearing the desi birds, without any technical guidance.
4. To improve the body weight gain of desi fowl by proper feeding regimen
prescribed by the book “NattuKozhi Ayirum” (Packages of practices
developed by VUTRC, Trichy, TANUVAS). This book will be issued to the
beneficiaries’ during training programme.
e) Details of the project implementation site (as far as possible should be in the vicinity of the targeted population and should not be concentrated at Pl's Institute). These projects will be implemented in length and breadth of entire Erode District,
which contains SC/ST population area. The operation will be made only in the thickly
populated SC/ST areas as mentioned.
f) Expertise available with proposed investigating group/institution for implementing project.
The Principle Investigator of the project is working as Assistant Professor in
Veterinary University Training and Research Centre, Erode. This institute belongs to
Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS). Right now two
experts mastering in Poultry Science (M.V.Sc.,-Poultry Science) and having wide
knowledge on poultry production and management is available. Expert team for
smooth conduct and completion of the project is also available at Veterinary College
and Research Institute, Namakkal and Madras Veterinary College, Chennai.
g) Infrastructure available including equipments at Pl’s Organisation.
The institute is fully equipped with facilities related to the project. Modernized
training hall with all facilities are available for giving training to the farmers. This
also includes hands on training, method demonstration, etc.,
For laboratory diagnosis of poultry diseases Microscope is also available. Centrifuge,
treatment facilities and other surgery related equipments are available. Infrastructure
related the scheme will also procure in future.
11. Work Plan
a. Methodology
• Under the Two stage random sampling technique will be adopted to choose
finite number of 520 SC/ST women beneficiaries.
• In the first stage 3 villages from each 14 developmental blocks through simple
random sampling.
• In the second stage 10 women beneficiaries from each of the chosen 52
villages will be selected through simple random sampling. ( List of Village-

19th month 36th month
12. Details of the involvement of SC/ST youth and/or weaker section in the project
along with training component so that technology transfer could be done effectively (enclose the list of villages & beneficiaries - SC/ST only). This programme will be first of its kind in this district.
We have to select the young, energetic and school dropout from SC/ST and
weaker section. The selected beneficiaries will be motivated through on campus,
off campus training programmes includes method demonstrations. After
completion of training, Commodity interest group (CIG) will be formed for
effective conduct and completion of the scheme. The training components will
be vaccination, deworming, marketing practices and sales promotion together
with the expertise in the field.
Village list is enclosed in separately. During processing of the project, beneficiaries
will be selected. (List of Villages- Annexure-II)
13. Details of raw materials/local resources needed in the project and/or available.
• Man power JRF, who will selected for this scheme will be utilized.
• Equipments
Available in VUTRC, Erode and equipments, which will purchased for
this scheme will be utilized.
In Erode district many Weekly sandies (Market) are available. This sandies will
be acted as a medium for purchase and sell the desi birds. Near to Erode district
Veterinary College and Research Institute is located. In College campus, one feed mill
is also available. Procurement of feed is easily possible from the station.
14. Justification for implementation of the project with full details as to how the target population will be involved.
In Erode district people under below poverty line are slowly changing their life
style and also the chicken consuming pattern. People want to consume desi bird meat
(In Tamil-Nattu kozhi kari) than commercial broiler meat. Numbers of commercial
desi bird farming systems are increased slowly. This is the evidence that people are
changing their meat consuming pattern. This type of change in behavioural pattern
will be utilized to improve the economic status of the SC/ST rural women and weaker
sections. The sufficient number of parent stock to meet out the demand of desi chicks
are not there. The SC/ST population is economically still below the margin level. By
doing this project the desi chicks will be supplied to the SC/ST peoples through this
project and definitely they will earn more money. Hence, Issue of the desi chicks to
SC/ST rural women and weaker section is justifiable one.
Through VUTRC, Erode has been extending training to the villages in animal
husbandry, poultry and goat farming. The present venture will be a new venture to
provide alternate employment to the SC/ST and weaker sections.
15. Indicate whether the project will help in maintaining environmental/ecological
balances.
Definitely this project will maintain the ecological balance. Droppings from the
desi birds are very good resource for agricultural and other fields. From the field it is
easily possible to get paddy and vegetables for human consumption. Grains such as
maize and pearl millet from these fields are used to prefer the concentrate feed meant
for desi birds. This project will not impose environmental issues.
16. Details of employment/revenue generation through the project in long term/development of entrepreneurship (indicate the additional income per annum through this project per beneficiary/family). SC/ST rural women and weaker section will maintain the desi chicks for longer
period and in turn they will get additional income along with regular job. In addition,
in long term, definitely they will get more chicks from parents. The interested group
will maintain the commercial desi bird farm. For example, they will maintain 1500
chicks for 90 days in commercial desi farm, they will get Rs. 30,000/- profit from
that batch. The demand from the public is on higher side where the situation is yet to
be fulfilled. Only by the VUTRC by taking up initiatives such as establishing a model
unit, conducting training programmes regularly in this unit, and allowing the
participants to involve themselves in marketing the products by direct contact with the
public.
17. Techno-economic viability of the project and its self-sustainability. Standards: Chick cost - Rs. 28 to 30 Desi birds marketing age- 90 to 100 days Mash Feed requirement for commercial farm- 4 Kg/bird Mash requirement for backyard systems- 2 Kg/bird Mortality rate - < 5% Labour required for initial 2 weeks- 2 /10,000 birds Labour required after 2 weeks- 1 /10,000 birds. Economic viability for 20 desi chicks: Chick cost ([email protected]) - Rs. 560 Mash Feed requirement (20X2XRs.16) - Rs. 640 Labour cost - Rs. 0 Night shelter cost - Rs. 200 Medicine cost - Rs. 100 Total expenses - Rs. 1500 Sales (19 [email protected]) - Rs. 2850 Total profit - Rs.2850- 1500= Rs.1,350 Self-sustainable:
• Training programme to the beneficiaries at free of cost • Giving the technical guidance to beneficiaries at free of cost • Training to the beneficiaries for marketing opportunities • Establishing linkage between consumers to have a sustainable market
continuously

ANNUXURE-I
PROJECT SUMMARY Erode district is known for farming activites and lands are highly fertile for
agriculture and livestock oriented programmes. The people of many villages who are
under poverty line or weaker sections are mostly rearing low performing desi birds in
backyard system. They lay around 40-60 eggs/bird/year and body weight is also very
low, which is very meager to meet out their economic livelihood. If, the rural SC/ST
women and weaker sections are provided with high performing Desi birds, after adopt
different feeding techniques to that birds, they will get around 80-100 eggs/year from
one bird. The backyard system of desi bird rearing is also slowly changing to
commercial method of bird rearing which earns more money and gives more profit to
the weaker sections. Hence, the people will be educated and motivated to follow
commercial method of Desi bird rearing for higher income generation. In Erode,
people are mainly focusing on desi bird rearing and main constraint to them is non
availability of sufficient breeder and hatcheries unit. They are also lacking proper
training and knowledge on these aspects.
In Erode district people are slowly changing their life style and also the
chicken consuming pattern. People want to consume desi bird meat (In Tamil-Nattu
kozhi kari) than commercial broiler meat. Number of commercial desi bird farming
systems is increasing slowly. This is the evidence that people are changing their meat
consuming pattern and consequently desi dird meat fetches premium price in retail
market. This type of change in behavioural pattern will be utilized to improve the
economic status of the SC/ST rural women and weaker sections. Because, Most of the
SC/ST Women are engaged in paddy field work from August to February. During
summer, they look after other works such as building and road construction, irrigation
channel, repairing works, etc., Most of the dry land available in this district are being
occupied by textile companies and part of the weaker community working in these
companies. Income generation by working in industry alone is not sufficient to
maintain their children’s health and education. The ST women are mostly living in
Talavadi, Timbam, Aasanoor and burgur areas. Their economic and social status also
very poor. If they are provided with desi chicks, their income generation level is
enhanced which meet outs their expenses. Through this project the upgraded desi
chicks will be supplied to the SC/ST rural women, such as educated,
unemployed, young and energetic, definitely they will earn more money.
