Subjective Safety

Most traffic collisions have the driver as the key determining factor.

In contrast, the elevated percentage of subjective safety paraded

by a significant number of drivers in numerous surveys conducted

does not always correspond to the reality.

To enable the transition from

subjective to objective safety,

drivers should have as a

cornerstone their knowledge,

experience, updated

information, and above all a

preventive driving attitude.

Subjective safety - An

attitude which leads us to

believe we are always safe

and in control of all dynamictraffic situations.

Knowledge and concrete application of traffic norms, vehicle

characteristics and control are vital elements. However, the

identification of adverse factors as well as the implementation of

adequate preventive measures while driving are the main determining

elements for your safety.

Do you consider yourself a driver with knowledge, skill, and

experience enough to control a motor vehicle in any giventraffic situation, foreseeable or not?

Do you have a thorough understanding of the features and

characteristics of your vehicle, thus affording you total control inany given situation?

Every automobile has distinct design and features that depend on its

intended purpose. Drivers must ensure a good working knowledge of

these characteristics. When operating a motor vehicle, it's important tobear in mind that technological advances and state-of-the-art devices do

not automatically denote an improvement in driving safety.

ZDo you regularly inspect your vehicle to ensure it is in a safe

operating order?

A periodic inspection of the vehicle's overall operating conditions is highly important for

your safety. This inspection will allow you to detect or anticipate potential problems that

may compromise your driving safety.

Tire condition and air pressure, operation of all lights, hydraulic fluid, lubricants, and cooling

level, windshield wiper and reservoir, safety features and general equipment all represent a

significant percentage of your subjective safety. This type of visual inspection does not

require more than 10 minutes a week.

[Do you plan your itinerary and route beforehand?

Unforeseen events and/or situations as well as not knowing the area you

are traveling through all foster driver distraction, stress and consequently

lack of safety behind the wheel. If you are traveling through unfamiliarareas enhance your level of attention and control your speed when

approaching potentially hazardous zones.

\

Do you contemplate how your physical and mental state may

influence your driving safety?

Drivers who are aware of their state of mind know that elements such as

lack of sleep, depression, euphoria or aggressiveness all contribute to the

occurrence of traffic accidents. If this takes place, use an alternativemeans of transportation and avoid driving whenever possible.

REMEMBER

A driver's behavior will determine her/his own safety. The

attitude embraced in traffic may be relatively safe orabsolutely dangerous. A driver's subjective safety is

conditional and capable of being changed and improved.

It is a matter of personal interest that directly or indirectly

benefits all roadway users.

Thanks for your commitment!
