YEAR 9: CURRICULUM OVERVIEW (Feb - Mar 2016) 1 Subject Topics to be covered Key Learning Unit 3 – Customized shoe Students will Research a number of contemporary graphic artists and designers. Experiment with colour and pattern in response to your inspirational research. Create a range of design ideas, developing the ideas into a detailed patterned final outcome. Pre-exposure homework Students can: 1. Using the internet research the ‘Converse’ brand or unusual patterned trainer designs. 2. Research ‘Street art’ and ‘Graffiti’ style images and text, exploring the work of a range of inspiring artists or one specific artist they find exciting. Imaginative Writing Following on from the unit in which students explore 19 th century fiction, students focus on developing their own writing skills in this unit. Students explore different ways to structure narratives, how to vary sentence structures and lengths for effect as well as using adventurous vocabulary and punctuation to shape their writing. The purpose of this imaginative writing is to engage the reader. Additionally, students focus on the technical aspects of language and practise how to spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately. Pre-exposure homework 1. Try writing your own short stories modelled on the work you looked at last term. 2. Collect an anthology of imaginative writing that you particularly like (from a range of modern and more classic texts). Jamie’s Home Cooking Skills: Rise to the Challenge To continue to develop students skills to prepare delicious and nutritious home cooked food. The end of term practical assessment will involve the skill of making shortcrust pastry, designing a snack food suitable for a packed lunch. Students will continue to develop their ability to plan and prepare main meals by focussing on desserts, creating dishes using the ‘creaming method’. Subject Topics to be covered

Key Learning

Unit 3 – Customized shoe

Students will Research a number of contemporary graphic artists and designers. Experiment with colour and pattern in response to your inspirational research. Create a range of design ideas, developing the ideas into a detailed patterned final outcome.

Pre-exposure homework

Feuds and Families

Students will continue to study this topic discussing their future plans in terms of family and relationships. They will make progress with grammar, writing and speaking in particular

Pre-exposure homework

1. Students should use www.languagesonline.org.uk to research how to do the future tense

2. Students should look up and learn 10 verbs in a dictionary to talk about what they are going to do in the future eg. to marry, to travel, to work etc.

Development

Why are some countries rich and other countries poor? Why is the continent of Africa so poor? What is fair-trade and how can it help development?

Pre-exposure homework

1. Find out about a developing country – what is the size of the population, the birth rate etc. – produce a fact-file for that country

2. What is Fair trade – make a list of all the fair trade products you can buy.

School, subject likes and dislikes, telling the time and consolidation of opinion phrases and justifications.

Students will explore the topic of school and will discuss their subject preferences. Students will also look at the cultural differences between the German and English school systems. In addition students will be introduced to more sophisticated opinion phrases as well as learning how to tell the time in German.

Pre-exposure homework

1. Do some online research about the German school system and make a list of similarities and differences to the English system.

2. Go online to klar.co.uk (username: ponthigh, password: pontlangs) and click on school, Schulfächer, Schuluniform and Schulregeln. Make a list of new vocabulary in German and in English.

Causes of WWII Holocaust

Key learning focuses on causes of World War Two, building on the work completed on the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party. The significance of the Holocaust and if it should be regarded as unique will also be explored. Extended writing and source analysis skills are developed via GCSE style practice questions. Students will consider different sources, learning to recognise and develop and understanding of key skills like historical interpretation.

Pre-exposure homework

1. Undertake independent research on the causes of World War Two. Can you prioritise and rank them in some sort of order?

2. Exact definitions of the word Holocaust vary, but a common theme is that of destruction or slaughter on a mass scale, especially caused by fire. Reflect on this definition- how accurate do you think it is?

Main project of the course. Using film music develop listening skills the vocab needed to understand how music is made. 4 key elements covered Bass, Chords, Tune, instruments. Students then using a picture stimulus create their own pieces starting with a tune, then adding chords and a bass. Pieces are recorded then assessed.

Students will have their first opportunity to decide for themselves which activities pathway best suits them. They may choose either a games pathway and look to apply decisions so that they can outwit their opponents or a dance pathway so that they extend the range of their communication of ideas and emotion. C1: Air & Water New GCSE (9-1)

• How can we treat disease?

• How has the Earth’s atmosphere changed over time, and why?

B2 Ask at home and create a list of vaccinations you have already had. Search for ‘From Jenner to Wakefield’ on Youtube; whilst watching the lecture make a list of reasons for and against vaccination. C1 Browse the website www.airquality.co.uk. Read the pages on air pollution and then using the air pollution forecast compare the index score in the North East to the predicted value for the midlands (Birmingham) and south east (London). Are you surprised by the results?

Students will be encouraged to use various prepositions and reflexive verbs in the present tense. They should now be used to adding detail to their work using connectives and should aim to include subordinate clauses such as ‘donde’ (where) and ‘que’( which) to add more sophistication to their independent work
