  • Aaron Siskind Activity This assignment requires you to focus on the small details of the space you’re most familiar with – your home! Take three photos in the style of Aaron Siskind, and edit them to be black-and-white high contrast shots. Your challenge is to develop imagery that documents the everyday in an unusual way. Aaron Siskind was an American photographer who shot abstract black -and-white images, which focused on nature, architecture and human form.

    largely known for detailed photographs of weathered city walls, graffiti, and other found textural surfaces. -

    Siskind’s photos emphasize the flatness of the picture plane.

    his approach to picture making - with close-up framing, as well as emphasis on texture, line, and visual rhymes - created abstract images of the real world.

    production To Capture your images, use whatever type of camera you have available – cellphone, DSLR, Point-And-Shoot, iPad … The Media Arts Department cannot provide equipment loans at this time, so use whatever you have available & be creative.

    REMEMBER TO Think about composition, texture, fragmentation & angles.

    *TIP: TO ACHIEVE A HIGH CONTRAST B&W IMAGE, HAVE A RANGE OF TONAL VALUEs IN THE COLOURS that You're PHOTOGRAPHING. IF YOU CAPTURE ALL SIMILAR COLOURS IN THE SAME TONE, THE FINAL IMAGE WILL lack tonal variation.

    Post-production For editing, USE THE applications THAT ARE pre- installed on your phone & computer. IF YOU ALREADY OWN PROFESSIONAL SOFTWARE (ADOBE PHOTOSHOP OR LIGHTROOM), YOU CAN USE THAT INSTEAD BUT IT’S NOT NECESSARY FOR THIS TYPE OF EDITING.

    After completing images, WRITE A ONE PARAGRAPH REFLECTION ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AND YOUR photos.

  • Aaaron Siskind Extension Activity If you want to delve deeper into Siskind’s work and enjoy the visual journaling process, develop a page/spread about his photography. You can include your opinion, a description of the artist/genre/photographs, quotes … As always, your final assignment should demonstrate your critical and creative thinking.

    You can complete this assignment digitally using a word processing application (Microsoft Word, Pages, Google Docs...) or use a free graphic design platform ( Canvas- https://www.canva.com) to create a moodboard/photo collage.

    OR Create a physical copy using your visual journal (only if you already have it at home) or on loose leaf paper. To submit, photograph your assignment.
