Dear Parents and Students Enclosed is information about subjects and areas of study offered at Ipswich Grammar School in Year 8 2022. Each subject has a synopsis describing the course content, units of study, some assessments and general information. English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Health and Physical Education are compulsory subjects. Each student must also choose one (1) subject from two (2) of the below curriculum areas, plus two (2) reserve subjects, which they will study for the entire school year. The 2 subjects chosen must be from different subject areas.

We will endeavour to accommodate students with their elective subject choices, however, due to staff availability, class sizes and physical resources, it may not always be possible.

Students are encouraged to consider the following when making their choices.

Chinese

Learning additional languages helps develop cognitive growth, communication skills and intercultural understandings. The study of Chinese expands career options and employability in a range of fields, and opens up new perspectives for students, not only in relation to other cultures and languages, but also to their own language and cultural practices. Students will learn to introduce themselves and talk about their likes and dislikes, their family, friends and hobbies. In addition to studying the language, students will engage in a variety of cultural activities such as watching Chinese films, trying Chinese food and participating in a range of traditional Chinese celebrations. Opportunities to participate in various speech and language competitions will also be offered to students.

Digital Arts

Digital Art concentrates on learning about digital technologies and how they may be used to create artworks on digital platforms: printing, displaying online, game engines, virtual reality, and video streaming. Unit 1 introduces students to digital photography, enhancing photos with traditional principles of design, lighting, digital colour correction, and compositional principles. Unit 2 introduces Adobe Photoshop photo editing and compositional skills to create surreal images. Unit 3 is about 3D modelling and texturing using Autodesk Maya 3D. The models can be 3D printed or exported to game engine. Unit 4 is about planning, filming, and editing a short video clip.

Drama Clowning around is devoted to all things comedy. Theatresport assesses participation with improvisation games, often with unpredictable and hilarious results. Further assessment sees students adopt rainbow wigs, red noses and oversized bow-ties while perfecting characterisation, communication and comic narrative for a final performance to the IGS Preps. The second half of the year is devoted to the art of Acting. Students study a range of realism texts that explore themes relevant to Year 8 students, such as friendship, bullying, family and the consequence of choices made. Assessment evaluates rehearsing and performing scripted plays as a group, in addition with performing individual monologues and soliloquies.

German The Year 8 German course aims to build on the Year 7 unit of study and prepare students for the upcoming ATAR unit. This course is open to anyone who is interested in German or Germany, or who had success in Year 7 German and is looking to choose German as an ATAR subject. In studying a range of different topics, students will learn to use German in more sophisticated ways, as well as learning about culture and the country itself. Learning German opens a range of possibilities for all students, and is also a high-level ATAR subject. Please note that if you wish to do German in the Senior years, you must also choose it in Year 8.

Industrial Technology and Design

Industrial Technology and Design (ITD) is a practical subject that engages students in design and manufacturing skills within a workshop environment. Students will learn to safely manipulate a variety of materials while working with a range of workshop tools. They will be required to complete workbooks and design folios, where they will gain further understanding of the processes they are engaged in and learn to graphically communicate ideas and critically evaluate their own work. The specific projects will vary; however, throughout the course students will gain manufacturing skills using a variety of materials including timber, metal and plastic.

Japanese

Students will expand on the basics of Japanese language studied in Year 8. They learn how to read, write, speak and listen to Japanese within a variety of contexts and topics, ranging from telling time and making plans, discussing things around the house, school life, seasons, going shopping, and describing the world around them. Students learn how to start using more sophisticated language and expand their vocabulary. They also learn about a range of aspects of Japanese culture within these topics through readings, classroom seminars and discussion, as well as hands-on experiences and role-play activities. The Year 9 Japanese course also aims to prepare students for further Japanese studies.

Music Students will survey the origins of program music by looking at how it is used to communicate meaning alongside animation. Throughout the year students will also learn to compose their own animation music and workshop ideas in a group setting by creating their own soundtrack to a Silent Film in Semester 2. In Unit 4 we study the use of music in clips and new media by designing a short-form video. Students develop numeracy, literacy, aural musicianship, and instrumental skills in conjunction with a suite of software experiences during the course.

STEM STEM is an elective subject that harnesses the knowledge and skills from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths to solve problems in project-based learning activities. Students are presented with challenges that are hands on and authentic, often derived from real-world problems. They will utilise a variety of technologies including Computer Aided Design (CAD), 3D printing, electronics, and robotics equipment as they engage in the design, construction, and testing of prototypes that address a given problem.

Visual Arts By making, responding and displaying artworks, students appreciate the role of Visual Art in past and present traditions. Visual Art equips students for a future of unlimited possibilities as they construct transferable communication skills and the capacity for global thinking. Unit 1 takes inspiration from Australian artist Howard Arkley through the creation of two illustrations that focus on landscape and suburbia. Unit 2 encourages students to form their own unique view of cultural themes by examining examples of Pop Art from the 20th and 21st centuries. 2 and 3 Dimensional projects include mediums of painting, drawing and sculpture. Tessellations in Print explores the covering of a plane using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps. In mathematics, tessellations can be generalized to higher dimensions and a variety of geometries. Dry-point etching is taught as a printmaking process to achieve variations in depth and contrast. In Unit 4, The Art of Realism introduces students to natural forms in real life and landscapes. Fine motor skills are developed and applied with drawing and illustration.
