Published bi-weekly by Beeville Publishing Co.

Rob Zombie is well known for being the lead singer and songwriter of his ’90s Grammy nomi-nated heavy metal band “White Zombie.” Since the group disbanded in 1998, Zombie has kept busy.

He released a handful of albums under his own

name, including Hellbilly Deluxe, The Sinister Urge and Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor, amongst others. Perhaps his most interesting endeavor outside of the recording studio was film-making.

In 2003, he released

his film “House of 1,000 Corpses,” which he wrote and directed along with its 2005 sequel “The Devil’s Rejects.”

Zombie was also invited to take over the reigns of the “Halloween” franchise reboot with mixed suc-cess.

In 2012, he wrote and directed “Lords of Salem,” a film about a Massachusetts DJ (played by Zombie’s wife, Sheri Moon Zombie) who

receives a mysterious box containing an old vinyl record. When she plays it, she begins seeing witches from the town’s past who may be coming to carry out their revenge.

The film was only released in a few the-aters before showing up on DVD shelves, but that didn’t stop Zombie from turning the screenplay into a novel.

The novel, “Lords of Salem,” is described as offering a different expe-rience than the film. The book and film comple-ment each other.

The release of Zombie’s first novel garnered him another award, this one for opening on the New York Times Best Seller List, resting at number 35 the week it was released.

As Zombie embarks on his “Night of the Living Dreads” tour with Korn, he’s making a few stops at book stores to promote “Lords of Salem” along the way.

On Sunday, Nov. 17, he’ll appear at the Corpus Christi Barnes & Noble, 5129 Blanche D Moore Dr., from noon until 2 p.m.

to sign copies of his book. Later that night he’ll take the stage at Concrete Street Amphitheater to do what he does best.

The lines will surely be long, so come early and

be prepared to stand for a few hours.

The wait could be worth it, though. After all, how often do you get to meet a musician turned film-maker turned novelist?

Throughout the month of November, there are two separate events that occur to raise awareness for cancer: No-Shave November and Movember.

Movember, a mash-up of the words mustache and November, was cre-ated in 1999 by a group of men in South Australia. It began as a charity fundraising event. Since then, it’s become a nation-al phenomenon across the United States, and it’s a great excuse to grow out your best ’stache.

Could your boss really get mad if you told him/her that your whiskered facade was for charity?

The goal of Movember is to “change the face of men’s health,” and it aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments and, ultimately, reduce the number of preventable deaths.

There are now a ton of charities that you can join and donate to, and you can find them by visiting us.movember.com.

No-Shave November is a sort of hybrid offshoot of Movember and is run by the American Cancer Society. For No-Shave November, participants are encouraged not to shave for the entire month of November,

to grow awareness by embracing hair, which cancer patients often lose. They encourage you to donate to the organiza-tion any money that you would normally use for grooming.

The interesting part of No-Shave November is that women are also encouraged to partici-pate, undoubtedly send-ing groans throughout the male community, as women are asked not to shave their legs or under-arms.

While that may seem a bit, um, “unwomanly,” many females from across the globe do participate in the event.

Keep in mind, cancer knows no sex or race.

You can learn more about the rules and how to donate by visiting no-shavenovember.com.

Both events have Facebook pages and Instagram accounts where you can post your best (or worst) beard-ed or moustached masterpiece, so feel free to browse the Internet and find your place amongst the grizzled mass-es.

Kacey Musgraves grew up in the small town of Golden, Texas,

which is about 80 miles east of Dallas. It’s known for, of all things, sweet potatoes. They’re so popular there that every October they host a Sweet Potato Festival.

But after the whirlwind year Musgraves just had, she might soon be the town’s claim to fame.

You can catch Kacey Musgraves at Schroeder Hall, 12516 FM 622 in Goliad, Saturday, Nov.

23, with the doors opening at 7 p.m. and the music kicking off at 8 p.m.

Musgraves just recent-ly took home a BMI Country Award for her song “Merry Go ‘Round” and then went on to take the Country Music Award for New Artist of the Year a few days later. Readers can catch her in People magazine, mentioned in Rolling Stone magazine and a slew of others.

Not too shabby for a 24 year-old.

She wrote her first song before she graduated mid-

dle school called “Notice Me” and said, “I can’t help but wonder now what the hell a n i n e - y e a r - o l d would’ve had to write about!”

Her public singing debut came at her local church, and from there, she hit the local opry scene.

“In Texas, every few towns have an opry house,” M u s g r a v e s e x p l a i n e d . “Performers come up on stage and sing old country songs with a live band. I did that every weekend. It got me famil-iar with being in front of people and working with musicians.”

At age 12, she decided to pick up the mandolin and later began taking guitar les-sons from a local musician named John DeFoore, who would mold the young singer/songwriter into an expert at her craft.

“My homework every week would be to write a song. I’d bring it back to him the next week, and he would cri-

tique it.”“When I first started

writing my own songs, they were pretty bad,” Musgraves admits. “I hadn’t found my own voice yet. But it made me appreciate the creative process, and it made me better. I learned not to be scared to just throw an idea out there.

“I had no clue how use-ful this would be to me when I moved to Nashville and signed a publish-ing deal. My ‘homework’ was essentially the same: write songs, bring them in, put them on tape and then have them critiqued. It’s the exact same thing John had me do.”

She released her first album at the age of 18 with help from her par-ents and grandparents and headed to Austin. Soon after, she was cho-sen as a participant for the TV reality show “Nashville Star,” which ended up not really pan-ning out as she left the show in seventh place.

But it did introduce her to the city of Nashville and, before long, her bags were packed, and she was headed to Music City.

Musgraves sang on other artists’ demos to pay the bills as well as getting to know industry heavies and other singer/songwriters. She even had some major labels on her heels and booked a few sessions with some well-known producers. She quickly discovered that wasn’t her thing.

“What we did sounded like them, not me. It just wasn’t the right time yet. If you only get one shot to say something, it better be exactly what you want to say from the beginning, you know?”

So she began furiously writing and honing her sound. It was during this time that she met Luke Laird and Shane

McAnally, two like-mind-ed writers who would eventually become co-pro-ducers on her first major label release.

So Mercury records came calling and released her album Same Trailer Different Park which they all co-wrote together.

The album contains the award winning single “Merry Go ’Round.”

Musgraves has opened for a lot of coun-try heavyweights, from Kenny Chesney to Lady Antebellum to Willie him-self.

“I opened some shows for Willie Nelson in Texas.

“Down there, that’s like Jesus coming back, you know? It was amazing.”

And Musgraves takes it all in stride. She’s worked hard to get where she’s at but knows that there’s a bit more work to do to be where she needs to be. But that doesn’t affect her spirit one bit.

“I’m just stoked that I get to wake up every day and do what I really love.

“As long as it lasts, I’m grateful.”
