To implement keeping the ‘Green patient’ for home the next day in Receiving ward. Anticipated Benefit To help ensure appropriate patients remain in the right clinical areas as well as supporting good decision making for identification of patients who are appropriate for boarding out of speciality. Implementation & Approach [Improvement & Engagement approaches used] Ensure all staff are educated on, and accept the concept Explain what we are trying to achieve and that the concept is directly linked to Ward view Encourage staff to link the concept to Ward view, EDD and Colour coding Medical Illustration to provide a poster which mimics Ward view, links the colouring with EDD and explains the meaning behind Red, Amber, Green classification of patients. Outcome [Outcomes and evidence of impact of improvement on 6EAs, overall 4 hour performance or specific flow group(s)] In ECU if the coordinator in charge thinks ‘keep the Greens’ these patients stay overnight and are discharged home early the next day thereby creating capacity and enabling patient flow. Currently implementing a two-week cycle of educating Ward 7&8 staff on the concept of Red, Amber, Green classification i.e. Green - patients stay in Ward Amber - patients have a plan in place however need some more intervention before discharge, therefore suitable for boarding Red – complex needs who require the specific skill set of that speciality to stay in Ward Initial indications suggest that patients are leaving the wards earlier in the day Key Lessons Learned Case Study Submission

EA3: Patient Rather than Bed Management - OperationalPerformance

Please describe the project in 250 WordsAimTo implement the Red, Amber and Green patient classification traffic light system in Wards 7&8. To implement keeping the ‘Green patient’ for home the next day in Receiving ward.Anticipated Benefit To help ensure appropriate patients remain in the right clinical areas as well as supporting good decision making for identification of patients who are appropriate for boarding out of speciality.Implementation & Approach [Improvement & Engagement approaches used]

Ensure all staff are educated on, and accept the concept Explain what we are trying to achieve and that the concept is directly linked to Ward

view Encourage staff to link the concept to Ward view, EDD and Colour coding Medical Illustration to provide a poster which mimics Ward view, links the colouring

with EDD and explains the meaning behind Red, Amber, Green classification of patients.

Outcome [Outcomes and evidence of impact of improvement on 6EAs, overall 4 hour performance or specific flow group(s)]In ECU if the coordinator in charge thinks ‘keep the Greens’ these patients stay overnight and are discharged home early the next day thereby creating capacity and enabling patient flow.

Currently implementing a two-week cycle of educating Ward 7&8 staff on the concept of Red, Amber, Green classification i.e.

Green - patients stay in Ward Amber - patients have a plan in place however need some more intervention before

discharge, therefore suitable for boarding Red – complex needs who require the specific skill set of that speciality to stay in

Ward

Initial indications suggest that patients are leaving the wards earlier in the dayKey Lessons Learned

Can’t always board the Amber patients due to clinical condition. A plan needs to be put in place for when there are no suitable Amber patients to

board. Success depends on the thinking process of the coordinator in charge More education regarding this concept needs to be carried out with the night

management.
