Study at St John’s – Flow Chart
University HSC For students intending to go to university and therefore require an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank). Students can research university courses to determine which subjects are recommended for their desired courses, and the previous year ATAR cut off for entry.
Students intending to attend university need to complete 12 units of Board Developed Courses (BDC) in Year 11 and at least 10 Board Developed Course units in Year 12.
Examples of careers requiring a university degree include: Teacher (Secondary or Primary School), Engineer , Nurse, Accountant, Psychologist, Physiotherapist, Scientist, ADFA careers, Veterinarian, Surveyor, Lawyer, Pilot, Chemist, Dentist, Doctor, Optometrist, Graphic Artist, Journalist, Musician, Paramedic, Town Planner, System Analyst, Architect, Builder.
Career HSC For students intending to complete the HSC and gain employability skills as part of their course of study and enhance entry to various career paths. The course of study can include Board Endorsed Courses which count towards the HSC but not the calculation of an ATAR for university entry. It may include a VET or EVET course. Examples of careers that may require non-university study, further training or an apprenticeship: Preschool Teacher, General Defence Force careers, Animal Attendant, Pilot, Accountant, Counselor, Graphic Artist, Retail Manager, Journalist, Massage Therapist, Musician, Ambulance Officer, Real Estate Agent, Information Technology Support Technician, Construction (e.g. carpenter, plumber and electrician), Office Worker, Hospitality Industry Worker, Sports Trainer, Hairdresser, Beautician, Mechanic, Metal Worker (e.g. welder/boilermaker), Farm Hand, Retail Worker.

Career Pathways
Below are some suggested patterns of study that can be used as a guide for various career and university pathways. Some points to note:
1. All students must choose one course in Religion: either Studies of Religion I, Studies of Religion II or Catholic Studies.
2. All students must choose one course from either English Standard, English Advanced or English Studies.
3. It is not possible to choose both English Advanced and English Standard.
University HSC Pathway
The pattern of study for this pathway is chosen from the general list of subjects that clearly meet the NESA criteria for attaining an ATAR (it may include only one VET Framework course). Students would follow this pattern of study to support entry to various career paths.
