Definitions Used for the Classification SystemThe classification system project employed a broad definition of AT so as to avoid omitting

devices or services that might be beneficial to persons with disabilities. These definitions, as

specified in the legislation, are noted below.

Assistive Technology Device. Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether

acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or

customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve

functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities (20

U.S.C. 33, ?1401 (25)).

Assistive Technology Service. Any service that directly assists an individual with a

disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an

assistive technology device. This includes:

0Evaluating the needs of an individual with a disability,

1Purchasing, leasing or otherwise providing for the acquisition of AT devices,

2Selecting, designing, fitting, customizing, adapting, applying, maintaining, repairing, or replacing AT devices,

3Coordinating and using other therapies, interventions, or services with AT devices,

4Training or technical assistance for an individual with disabilities or family of an individual with disabilities, and

5Training technical assistance for professionals, employers, and others who provider services to, employ, or are otherwise substantially involved in the lives of persons with disabilities (20 U.S.C. 33, ?1401 (26)).

Conventions Used in the Tabular ListThe National Classification System for Assistive Technology Devices and Services uses

certain abbreviations, punctuation, symbols, and other conventions, which need to be clearly

understood.

Punctuation

[ ] Brackets are used to enclose synonyms, alternative wordings, or explanatory phrases.

( ) Parentheses are used to enclose supplementary words which may be present or absent in the statement of a device or service without affecting the code number to which it is assigned.

{ } Braces are used to enclose a series or terms, each of which is modified by the statement appearing at the right of the brace.

Bold: Bold typeface is used for all codes and titles in the tabular list.

Italics: Italicized typeface is used for all exclusion notes and to identify those rubrics, which are not to be used for classification of devices and services.
