Study on woven finishing methods
in woven dyeing industries1 Introduction:
Finishing: Finishing is the general term for a multitude of
processes and treatments that a fabric may undergo after it has
been made (woven or knitted) and colored (dyed or printed). It is
the final processing of cloth.
Woven fabric: Weaving is the process of interlacement of two
sets of yarn to make a fabric. The threads which run lengthways
are called the warp and the threads which run across from side to
side are the weft or filling. Cloth is usually woven on a loom, a
device that holds the warp threads in place while filling threads
are woven through them. By this process which fabric is produced
is called woven fabric.
Relation between woven fabric and finishing: In Bangladesh
woven fabric is used widely. The finishing line after dyeing of
woven fabrics is easier than knit fabrics. Most fabrics will have
been subject to finishing treatment before being offered for sale.
Some fabrics may have two or more finishing treatments to make
them suitable for their intended end use.
2 Objective of Woven fabric finishing
Different finishes are done for different purposes. Mainly the
purposes of finishing are:
To improve the appearance of the fabrics
To fulfill the buyer requirement
To make the fabric more suitable for its intended end use
To give desire effect on the fabric
To improve aesthetic properties
To improve functional properties
3 Types of Woven fabric finishing
Most fabrics produced by weaving or knitting have to undergo
further processing before they are ready for sale. In finishing, the
fabric is subjected to mechanical and chemical treatment in which
its quality and appearance are improved and its commercial value
enhanced. Each type of fabric has its own particular finishing
operations.
3.1 Mechanical finishing
3.2 Chemical finishing
The finishing activities in different types of textile
manufacturing require a comprehensive range of chemicals which
are used for textile finishing purpose. Chemical finishes of textile
products primarily deals with the wide range of effects that
directly results from the action and reaction between the
chemicals and the textile finishing products.
Finishing, as the term implies, is the final step in fabric production. Hundreds of finishes can be applied to
textiles, and the methods of application are as varied as the finishes.
Cotton fabrics are probably finished in more different ways than any other type of fabrics. Some finishes change
the look and feel of the cotton fabric, while others add special characteristics such as durable press, water
repellency, flame resistance, shrinkage control and others. Several different finishes may be applied to a single
fabric.
