What kind of university is Sapienza?Sapienza is a large, comprehensive, public university with a long tradition and a very good international reputation in all major fields of study. As a public University, it is funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and talented international students can benefit from the opportunity of studying in a world-class research environment, paying very low tuition fees.

Where is the University located and when was it founded? The University is located in the heart of the capitalofItaly. Rome is a beautiful city with a long history and a vibrant life style, which are great attractions for tourists coming from around the world. As a part of Europe, Italy allows international students to travel and study across the Schengen Area, which includes 26 countries. Sapienza, which was founded in 1303, is the oldest University in Rome.

How do I apply for a programme at Sapienza? Our University provides over 250 Bachelors and Masters degrees, as well as 81 PhD Programmes. Besides the many courses in Italian, Sapienza also provides over 35 programmes that are held entirely in English (which require an on-line pre-selection process). Please take a look at our brochures or download information from our website (www.uniroma1.it – “Course Catalogue” or “International Area”).

What language is needed to apply for a programme? Are there any other requirements? If you are interested in applying to one of our programmes, either in Italian or in English, your language level should be the B2 Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (upper intermediate). Our international programmes in English require different academic backgrounds, based on the field of study. Please check the specific requirements for each programme or contact its academic coordinator. According to Italian law, students applying to a Bachelors Programme must have completed at least 12 years of school.

When can I apply for the next academic year and how many places are available?International programmes in English are run through an online pre-selection platform. Students can submit their applications from November until mid-April or mid-May (depending on the programme) every year. There is only one selection deadline and students are expected to be in Rome (after completing their pre-enrolment at the Italian consulate in their countries) by mid-September.

How expensive is it to study at Sapienza? Are scholarships available?Tuition fees are particularly convenient for all international students, thanks to public investments by the Ministry of Higher Education. The cost is 1000 euros per year. Additionally, there are various scholarships available at different levels: National (“Invest Your Talent in Italy”, MAECI Scholarship), Regional (LazioDISU) and University (“Don’t Miss Your Chance”). Once you are enrolled, you can apply for a range of merit-based scholarships (Erasmus+, on-campus jobs, etc.).

Are Rome and Italy safe?Italy is considered a safe country. International students normally have no problems. They feel at ease and appreciate the Italian style of life. Rome is one of the cradles of the western civilization. It hosts the Vatican City, which makes it a visiting place for catholic tourists, but millions of others are attracted by ruins of the Roman Empire and the beauties of the Renaissance and the Roman Baroque. Rome is home to many international communities and open to all religions and beliefs.
