    Studs or shoulder studs can be used in all types of aviation applications. Shoulder studs can either be welded toa flat surface or to the inside or outside of an angle. They are also used asmountings for panels and hardware when a standoff shoulder is necessary. Thelength you will see listed of a shoulder stud is the length of the stud before it iswelded. Studs with diameters of half an inch and lower will be about an eighth ofan inch shorter when welded. Those with diameters of 5/8 and will beapproximately 3/16 shorter after welding.

    The studs are generally made out of low carbon steel but are also available instainless steel that can be welded. The material that the studs is made of dependson the range of temperature that the service will be in.     They are often used with bronze sleeve bearings and are used as guides in blanking and forming presses, and in punch and die operations. S bolts usually have a cylinder shaped head, a cylindrical shoulder, and a threadedsection. They have a small area in the middle of the threads and shoulder which is undercut to allow for a tightfit against the mating surface. S bolts are used along with nuts and tapped holes. The shoulder part is theenlarged and unthreaded part of the screw, which is the basis of the nominal size. The size of the shoulderranges between 0.002 and 0.004 of the nominal size. A half inch shoulder bolt will have a shoulder diameterof 0.498 maximum.

    Since studs have a hex socket, they should be tightened with a hex driver. When the size is 1 and under, thehex socket will be half the should er diameter. For sizes of 1 to 2, the hex socket is a little larger than half.Since the s bolt is internally wrenched, clearance around the wrench head is not needed for the bolt to beinstalled. S bolts are standardly finished with a plain steel finish so there is no inclination to rust.
