NID’s new Curriculum documents.

Recently, the curriculum for all the 17 PG disciplines and 8 UG disciplines at NID has gone through major revision. The new curriculum has been implemented from the last academic year. Each document, for each discipline has details of the flow chart of the entire program and course abstract papers, categorised semester-wise. The documents need to be made accessible in print and on the web medium (intranet).

Safe Traffic

road rage. wrong side. three on two (wheelers). sans-helmet. rash driving. honk-honk-honk. spitting out of car windows. The unsafe (and often illegal) behaviour of motorists across the city is not something new. We have all experienced this, or contributed to the chaos at some point of time. You can bind your own book

Hand book binding is both a science and an art. Since the last decade, NID’s print labs has spearheaded the dissemination of this technique and skill through workshops and demonstration sessions. These have been restricted to students of NID. A need is felt to create a system (illustrated manual, ready-reckoner) on binding in general and hand book binding in specific, to share this with a larger audience

Find your way

The heritage campus (as the paldi campus is known) of NID has a building which offers a certain modularity in it’s function. The current signage and wayfinding systems is dated and not befitting the stature of a premier design institute. The need is felt to re-examine it from a perspective of inclusive design and modularity.

NID-Design-NID-what?

Design as a profession has gained acceptance in the Indian mindset of late. Despite being half a century old, NID banks on the Young Designers & admissions info to spread information about itself and design as a profession. A comprehensive informative material on promoting NID as an institute and design in general for the generic audience is the need of the hour.

Document - disseminate

The foundation programme at NID is the core of undergraduate studies, and one of the most sought after courses id Space, Form & Structure (SFS). This course is a mix of theoretical concepts, it’s applications and skills. Being taught by groups of different faculty members in the last several years, it is felt that the course structure & methodology needs to be documented for wider dissemination, creating a repository of assignments and a resource for design teachers.

A self help hand-book for girls with puberty related issues

Studio I - Project proposal

I had been a volunteer counselor at my native place, Jamshedpur, for the past 3 years, in two schools, Sacred Heart Convent School and Valley View School. Based on my close interactions with the resident counselors of these two schools, I realised that the counselors often had a problem in diversifying their counselling session material

to other students who were shy of approaching them. These counseling sessions usually happened via word of mouth and there was no literature available in a format that could be helpful to other students as well. The counselors felt that if something tangible was created which not only translated their literature and experiences but

was also be easily accessible to all students who could not approach them, that would make their effort more successful. In their experiences over the past years, these counselors have observed that most of the students who approached them were girls and needed advice regarding puberty related issues.

1. Project introduction

My project aims at creating a tangible output which translates the informal literature present with school counselors and effectively addresses puberty related problems in school going girls.

2. Problem statement

A tangible output needs to be created which communicates their experiential literature to students who cannot seek their help.

It needs to be easily comprehendible and accessible so that girls who are undergoing issues with growing up

3. Need/Relevancecan understand the physiological and emotional changes which are taking place, and the combined effect on their everyday life.

If a self help hand-book with authentic information is developed, the source being an experienced

counselor who has spent many years tackling such issues and not some random internet website or advice from peers, this might address the the students’ need.

The scope of my project looks at how graphic design can intervene for presenting informal and experiential content into an easily comprehendible format.

It looks into the complexities of puberty related issues and the

4. Scope of projectvarious ways in which its solutions can be presented.

The scope looks at developing a good visual language in terms of the format, illustrations, typography and colors that the target group can easily relate to.

It looks at providing a practical tangible output which is cost effective and can be easily accessible to all students.

IntroductionDuring the letterpress era, moveable type was composed by hand for each page. Cast metal sorts were composited into words and lines of text and tightly bound together to make up a page image called a

forme, with all letter faces exactly the same height to form an even surface of type. The forme was mounted in a press, inked, and an impression made on paper.

With the advances in printing technology, mass production in more than one colour became easier. Today, a large amount of flexographic printing is used which is a similar process which uses rubber plates.

Setting type by hand has become less common with the invention of the photopolymer plate.

Why Letterpress? The biggest reason that I want to work on letterpress is because it offers a hands-on immediacy that other

methods can’t offer. The whole process feeds the senses: the coldness and weight of metal type; the rhythm of printing machines cycling quietly; the smell of oil and ink and the great sense of seeing a wonderful

printed page. The time taken can induce a concentration which excludes the immediate world.

While exploring the technique, I want to concentrate on hand composing the hot metal type to understand typographic details. Eventually, practising with composing characters, the final deliverable to be printed shall

be decided. It will involve either concrete poetry or typographic expression of famous speeches or quota-tions by great scholars and thinkers.

PROJECT/01PROPOSALThe School

Diary ProjectIntroduction_A school diary is the most significant means of communication between the teachers and parents. It also, often takes up the role of promoting the values that the school projects. The user demographic it caters to, is a wide and varied one, including the teacher(s) parents and the children.

Need/Target_Since the school diary/almanac targets a wide range of users, decisions about choice of graphic elements and the physical structure of the book need to be versatile. Only a few of the schools have a track record of responding to user feedback and making amendments in the structure and content presented. Though the users become acquainted with the diary because of everyday use, there remain issues with the way they interact with information and/because of the way it is presented in the diary. A constant use of the book means that it has to stand a lot of wear and tear, and it usually ends up dog-eared and torn. The layout, often carried out at the printer's, doesn't take into consideration these finer aspects. This also means inconsistency in terms of the visual language of the school's communication. The school committees are often not involved with the printing process and stand a chance of overlooking constraints and possibilities.

Scope of Work_❉ Rethinking the physical structure based on research.❉ Layout and structuring the content based on user needs.❉ Looking at the school diary as a brand communication medium for the school.

WHAT IS RGB?RGB is a National Level, Inter-college, Design fest, organised by the students of National Institute of Design, every two years. The purpose of RGB, is bring students and pro-fessionals from various backgrounds relat-ing to design to a common platform and enable the spirit of learning, while cultivat-ing tangible and intangible outputsfrom it.

The festival is to be held on the 2nd, 3 a and 4th of October 2009. For the Fest the RGB team requires a series of Graphic Design inputs in terms of branding and identity.

WHAT IS THE INTENT OF RGB 09?The intent of RGB 09 is to look at design in a newer, unconventional perspective. Thereare four underlying purposes to RGB 09:• Learning and understanding design• Understanding the essence of NID• Inculcating the spirit of sharing• Having fun in work and play alike• Evolving from the previous fest• Developing a greater degree of focus• Developing a mature intent• Better management of the fest• Relooking at design through events and processes• Learning through the emerging confluence of people• Creating a network of these people

MOTIVATIONThrough this project I would be able to understand and grasp the elements that convert an identity to a full fledged brand-ing project.

The Project would challenge my skills and decisions as a Graphic Designer, as each of my desicions would reflect in the final
