(1)Sword and Chain

These are placed to form the Cross of Christ.

The chain represents the strong bond of Christian Unity.

It is made up of small links, just as love is made up of little, almost unnoticed thoughts and actions so our life as a school community is made up of daily action and deeds that together build a strong bond between us.

The fact that the chain is round the sword shows us that our actions and deeds (our love for each other) is rooted in Christ.

(2) Tower and Red Hand

The Tower with a Red Hand symbolises the first Irish Mother house of the St Louis Order in the town of Monaghan (it is also found on the crest of Monaghan town) in 1859.

From there the sisters travelled to England, Ghana, Nigeria, California and Brazil where they still have connections today.

(3) Fleur de Lis

The Fleur – de – Lys is a flower named ‘lily of the valley’ and is the emblem of the kings of France where the St Louis family originated.

It is believed an angel gave a lily to King Clovis I, France’s first Christian King, at his baptism.

It represents pure love which is paramount in combating Sectarianism.

(4) School Motto

Translated it means ‘may we all be one’

These words are taken from the last prayers of Christ written in the Gospel of St John. They are from ‘his last will and testament’, his final prayer for us.

Page 6: Studies... · Web viewIt is believed an angel gave a lily to King Clovis I, France’s first Christian King, at his baptism. It represents pure love which is paramount in combating

This shows how Christ wanted to reach out and embrace the whole world, no matter who they are.

We as a school community should treat others in the community in this way.

(5) ‘Dieu le Veult’

Translated from French is ‘God wills it’ or ‘May the will of God be done’!

What God commands through the Gospel is that we love one another.

This command gives us the courage to accept our life, our family, our culture and all our talents as gifts from God.

Both these mottoes teach us how we should treat others within our school community and the community whilst following the example set to us by Jesus as found in the scriptures.

Sacraments and Baptism

In the Catholic Church there are seven sacraments in total. They are:

Baptism Reconciliation (Confession)

Definition: A sacrament is a visible sign of an invisible gift

from God.

Page 7: Studies... · Web viewIt is believed an angel gave a lily to King Clovis I, France’s first Christian King, at his baptism. It represents pure love which is paramount in combating

Eucharist (Communion) Confirmation

Anointing of the Sick (Sacrament of the Sick)

Marriage Holy Orders

By the age of twelve most people in the Catholic Church have celebrated four of the seven sacraments!

The Rite of Baptism for Children

The following are the main moments of the celebration of Baptism.

(1) Welcome at the Door:

The priest welcomes everybody at the door of the Church. The parents give the baby’s name. The baby is welcomed. The priest asks the parents and godparents to help the baby to be a follower of Jesus. They make the sign of the cross on the baby’s forehead.

(2) The Word of God at the Ambo (Lectern)

All then listen to the scripture readings. In the Prayers of the Faithful, everyone prays for the baby and the baby’s parents.

(3) Preparing for Baptism

The Priest anoints the baby with blessed oil. He says a special prayer asking God to protect the baby.

The Meaning of Baptism

Baptism is a joyful occasion that celebrates God’s gift of new life and God’s love for us all. At Baptism we become followers of Jesus! As we grow older we get to know more about him! We learn what it means to live like Jesus – loving others and treating them with respect. Through Baptism we become members of the Church and part of the Body of Christ. At Baptism we receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit, who helps us to live like Jesus. He helps us to turn away from sin.

Baptism for Adults

Most Catholics are baptised as babies, but some people are baptised and become Catholics when they are adults. They spend about two years

preparing for Baptism. They may have a sponsor to help them. Adult Baptism is usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night, That is, the Saturday night before Easter Sunday. We also renew our own Baptismal promises at this mass.

As well as doing things for us, Baptism also asks something of us.

It asks us to be followers of Jesus in the way we live It asks us to show that we are members of the Church and part of the

Body of Christ in the way we treat others. It tells us to expect the Holy Spirit to guide us and it asks us to do as

the Holy Spirit suggests.

Things used in Baptism

Water:

Water brings life and growth. Baptism makes God’s gift of new life grow in us. Water also cleans. Baptism puts us in right relationship with God

White Garment:

We wear special clothes for special occasions. Special clothes are worn to show our new life as followers of Jesus and member of the Church.

Page 10: Studies... · Web viewIt is believed an angel gave a lily to King Clovis I, France’s first Christian King, at his baptism. It represents pure love which is paramount in combating

Baptismal Candle:

This is lit from the Easter Candle which represents the Risen Lord. He brings light to our world by telling us of God’s love and teaching us to love one another.

Oil:

Before the Baptism the baby is anointed with blessed oil called oil of Catechumens. The priest prays that Christ will strengthen the baby with goodness. After the Baptism the baby is anointed with Chrism, sweet smelling, perfumed oil. This reminds everyone that God loves the baby.

Remembering Our Confirmation

The Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation are connected. During the sacrament of Confirmation we renew our Baptismal promises and are anointed with the same oil used in Baptism, Chrism.

The Rite of Confirmation takes place as follows:

The ceremony begins with singing and the Bishop enters the Church. The bishop presides over the ceremony, showing the importance of this sacrament within the Church.

The mass continues as normal with readings and the sermon. The Bishop then asks those being confirmed to stand for the renewal

of their Baptismal promises.

Page 11: Studies... · Web viewIt is believed an angel gave a lily to King Clovis I, France’s first Christian King, at his baptism. It represents pure love which is paramount in combating

The Bishop and the priests pray together and lay their hands over those being confirmed. Their prayer asks that the Holy Spirit is always with those being confirmed.

Those being confirmed then go to the Bishop with their sponsor to have the oil of Chrism put on them. This is the mark of the Holy Spirit in this sacrament.

The mass is then continued as normal to the celebration is finished.

Tensions in the Land of Jesus’ birth

Timeline of main events around the time of Jesus

63BC – Palestine conquered by Romans

40BC – Romans appointed Herod as King. Because he was not Jew, the Jewish people never accepted him. He was king at the time of the birth of Jesus. He died when Jesus was still a boy.

8 – 4BC – The Birth of Jesus

AD 1 – Death of Herod

AD 26 – Pontius Pilate made governor of the province of Judaea. After Herod’s death, his three sons ruled the country. They were

bad rulers.

AD 24/25 – Around this time Jesus began his ministry.

The Romans were not welcomed in Palestine. They made Jewish people pay taxes to them. The Zealots, who were a select group of ‘freedom fighters’, wanted to get rid of Roman rule. For them, God was Palestine’s only ruler.

The Land of Palestine at the time of Jesus

In the time of Jesus, Palestine consisted of three main regions: Galilee, Samaria and Judaea. Palestine had two lakes: the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. The River Jordan connected these two lakes. Palestine had one major city – Jerusalem. There were also several small villages and towns.

The people who lived in Samaria were called Samaritans. They were not Jewish. Jews could not go into this area as Jews did not trade or mix with Samaritans or people of other races.

The north of Palestine was very different from the south. Galilee, in the north, with its lake called the Sea of Galilee was a place of rich fertile plains and steep hills.

LAW

At home in Nazareth at the time of Jesus

Nazareth was the place where Mary and Joseph made their home and where Jesus grew up.

The typical house

There house would’ve been small- which was typical of an ordinary worker.

The four walls would have been made out of wood and stone, whitewashed inside and out.

The house would have had one or two small windows and a door.

The Inside- the Lower level

There was just one area, split into two levels The lower level was usually used as a stable- most villagers owned a goat

or two and a few hens Some owned a donkey and even a few sheep The animals went outside during the day and were brought back inside at

night to stop them being stolen.

The upper level

The upper level was where the family lived. Among the few pieces of furniture was a wooden chest which contained the family’s special things.

Alcoves and ledges around the walls held household utensils. Wineskins hung from large hooks. Large jars contained water, oil and grain. An oil lamp burned night and day because the Jews did not like darkness.

The rest of the house

At the side of the house, rough steps led up to the roof. The roof was flat so that it could be used for eating, sitting or even

sleeping on a warm night,

The Shema

Jesus at school- Bar Mitzvah

Move from being a child to being an adult.

Judaism says a boy is a “Bar mitzvah” when he turns 13 and a girl becomes a “bat mitzvah” when she turns 12.

The child is now responsible for what they do. If they do anything wrong, it is their fault and not their parents’.

“Hear O Israel, the Lord your God is one and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul

and with all your strength.”
