2005 Quinones Q 0910 Studies on the Chemistry of 2-(2-Oxo-3-phenylpropyl)-benzaldehydes: Novel Total Synthesis of 3-Phenylnaphthalen-2-ols and 2-Hydroxy-3-phenyl-1,4-naph- thoquinones. — The title aldehydes (VI) undergo intramolecular aldol condensation under basic conditions to give naphthols (VII). Oxidation of the latter compounds re- sults in a novel, efficient synthesis of 1,2-naphthoquinones (VIII), which are efficiently transformed into 1,4-naphthoquinones (IX). In addition, treatment of aldehyde (VIa) under Jones conditions affords acid (X) and isochromenone (XI).
