To Develop Positive Playtimes

ISSUE/SCENARIO ACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE

NEXT STEPS

The large space and large number of students was bewildering for some of our students at break/lunchtimes. MDSAa and school staff felt focused and supported activities would provide an environment where more children would feel confident to join and be more active.

• Money invested in play equipment: skipping ropes, spinning cones, ball and cups.

• Mrs Murie employed to support children with games.

• Y6 Leaders took responsibility for supporting skipping activities

• Playtime shed purchased to store equipment

• Anecdotal evidence of children cooperating and socializing better with each other – MDSAs reported fewer disputes amongst children

• Fewer first aid incidents at lunch break as activities more focused.

• Children developing cooperation skills – taking in turns and sharing.

Mrs Murie to attend a Change 4 Life Course 15th September. To run a Change 4 life Club one lunchtime a week for targeted children.Ensure equipment lost through wear and tear is replaced so impetus for active playtimes is not lost.BR to attend “Positive Playgrounds workshop at County Conference and disseminate information

NEXT STEPS

As a school we wanted to make the families of our pupils aware of what is available to them out of school hours, to increase their levels of activity and support time spent together as a family.

• Contact made with outside clubs to see who would be interested in supporting the week

• Timetable of activities arranged

• Parent letters sent out in advance so they could spend time off work to participate with their child.

• A full week of activities for all children took place

• 6 local clubs/coaches attended

• Over a third of parents attended

• Children have joined local TKD Club following this,

• Bowls club has extended its Open Day sessions to accommodate interest.

• Children’s awareness of British Sporting heroes was heightened.

• Host a similar week in 2016 – National School Sports Week

• Continue link with bowls club.

To develop children’s confidence and self esteem.

ISSUE/SCENARIO

ACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE

NEXT STEPS

• In Sept 2014 our school wanted to support children with their confidence and self esteem through in- school provision using our outdoor environment.

• In consultation with forest leaders, a site was developed at SJS - to enable the continued provision of forest school activities.

• Forest school leaders plan, teach and evaluate learning in the forest environment. Self –esteem and confidence is also monitored and progress is fed back to teachers.

• Equipment and children's’ tools to develop school site has been bought.

• Children are kept physically active in a variety of activities e.g. archery after making their own bows and arrows, cooking utensils with forest themes and a variety of construction opportunities.

• Children participating in the forest school have shown instant and marked improvement in confidence. One class teacher said, “I referred 3 children from my class to forest school who were finding mixing and working with others quite challenging. They were struggling to make new bonds with friends. Through forestry they have made new friends, discovered new skills and they come into class buzzing. “

• Continue to offer the forest school provision.

• Invest in further equipment to develop the provision further.
