The Morag Jones Memorial FundThis fund was established in 2011 in the will of Mrs MARGARET JONES in memory of her daughter Morag who was a postgraduate research student in the Department of Botany. The fund is to be used to fund field trips and expeditions with a botanical/conservation component.

Herbert Knapman Postgraduate Studentship in ScienceThis Studentship was established under the will of the late Miss EDITH KNAPMAN in memory of her brother Herbert Knapman, a former Registrar and Tutorial Secretary of the University. The Studentship is not open to persons following a course of study in the Institute of Education. Save as previously stated the Studentship is open to a man or woman holding an appropriate first degree qualification. The holder of the Studentship is required to follow a full-time course of directed research or instruction, ordinarily in preparation for a higher degree of the University of Reading, on a scientific topic. The Studentship is ordinarily tenable for three years, subject to annual renewal. The holder of the Studentship will not be permitted also to hold a comparable award. Selection for the Studentship will be made by the Committee on Postgraduate Research Studies in consultation with the Warden of St Patrick’s Hall. The value of the Studentship will be the same as for a University Postgraduate Studentship.

The David Malvern PrizeThis award was established in 2011 by family, friends and colleagues in memory of David Malvern, Professor in the Institute of Education. The fund will be used to increase the award for the best piece of reflective assessed work submitted by a member of staff completing the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice.

The Monck Memorial Postgraduate StudentshipThis Studentship was established in 1967 by the TRUSTEES OF THE MONCK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND (The Corporation of Reading) in conjunction with the University of Reading. The Studentship is open to a man or woman whose parents or guardians reside in Reading or Berkshire at the beginning of the course for which the grant is made. The holder of the Studentship is required to follow a full-time course of directed research or instruction, ordinarily in preparation for a higher degree of the University of Reading, in a subject within the purview of any of the Faculties. The Studentship is ordinarily tenable for three years, subject to annual renewal. The holder of the Studentship will not be permitted also to hold a comparable award. Selection for the Studentship will be made by the Committee on Postgraduate Research Studies of the University, taking into account (a) evidence of merit, and (b) any evidence of need. The recommendation for the award of the Studentship will be made by the Committee on Postgraduate Research Studies to the Trustees of the Scholarship Fund.

The value of the Studentship will be £2,975 per annum from the Trustees of the Scholarship Fund, and the Committee on Postgraduate Research Studies of the University together, with remission of the Composition Fee for the higher degree course to be pursued.

Wilkie Calvert Postgraduate StudentshipsThese Studentships, and the Wilkie Calvert Research Fellowship, were established in 1978 under the will of the late Miss PHYLLIS A. GARDNER in memory of Mr Wilkie Calvert, a Life Member of the University Court. Each Studentship is open to graduates of any University who have obtained a first degree. The holder of an award is required to follow a full-time course of directed research or instruction, ordinarily in preparation for a higher degree of the University of Reading. Each Studentship is normally tenable for up to three years and its value will be the same as for a University Postgraduate Studentship. Selection will be made by the Committee on Postgraduate Research Studies and preference may be given to applicants who are not eligible for other awards. Not more than two Studentships will be available at any one time.

P. W. Campbell Postgraduate ScholarshipThis Scholarship is open to a full-time postgraduate research student intending to study some aspect of European Government or politics (including international relations).

The Edith Margaret Elderfield ScholarshipThis scholarship was established under the will of Miss Edith Margaret Elderfield. The scholarship is intended to assist students who are British citizens wishing to embark on a professional career in the general area of Agricultural Economics to pursue postgraduate studies at the University. Each scholarship shall normally be tenable for one academic year only. Applications should be made to the Head of Agricultural and Food Economics.

II Other Scholarships and AwardsThe following is a list of other Scholarships and Awards, of which further details may be had from the Student Financial Support team or relevant department.

The Alan Wardman Travel Award – Classics, to be awarded to an outstanding student, maybe in the form of books or travel in the Mediterranean or Near East, for study purposes.

The Arthur Hosier Award – Faculty of Life Sciences (Variable value – travel).

Following approval from the Charity Commission the fund listed below has been combined with the Arthur Hosier Award.

The Botanical Bursary

The Brierley Fund – Agricultural Botany Travel Award.

The Blandfordia Bursaries – for undergraduates studying botany, to enable them to carry out field work, visit botanical institutions and attend conferences. (Up to 4 × £50 per annum).

The Clifford Norton Award – Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences (For promotion of graduate studies and research including assistance with travel) (c. £200).

Following approval from the Charity Commission the funds listed below have been combined with the Clifford Norton Award.

The Ernest Ridley Scholarship The Florence Horncastle Fund

The Doris Griffin Organ Scholarship – Music/St Giles Church for an undergraduate or postgraduate student. The Organ Scholar would be expected to assist in the musical activities of St Giles Church (£1000 per annum).

The Eugene Seah Prize – School of Construction Management and Engineering. Awarded to the best quantity surveying student on the basis of performance in the final year (amount variable).

The Dr N.S. Barron Fund for Applied Physical Sciences – Undergraduate and Postgraduate students of Computer Science, Cybernetics and Electronic Engineering and the School of Construction Management and Engineering (Bursaries towards fees and living costs for either a first degree or higher degree course in those subjects).

The Graham Robertson Travel Award – Faculty of Arts and Humanities (up to a maximum of £400).

The GVA Grimley Sponsorship Award – Two prizes of £1500 each: for the outstanding academic performance in the second year of the BSc Land Management course and the third year of the BSc Land Management/MSc Urban Planning Development.

The Jeanette Martin Prizes – (Two Prizes of £75 each).

The John Hayes Fund for Disabled Students – Disabled students, for needs relating to studies, equipment, etc.

The Knight Frank & Rutley Travel Award – Best performance in Part II BSc Land Management (£500 + piece of equipment).

The Lord Samuel of Wych Cross Award – Entrance scholarship for MSc in Land Management (£1,000).

The Marshal Papworth Scholarships Programme – Scholarships for students domiciled in developing countries, wishing to study on certain development degrees offered by the Graduate Institute of International Development & Applied Economics (GIIDAE). The programme will support four Scholarships per year. The Scholarships consist of full tuition fees and stipends for all scholars, covering living expenses according to the University’s minimum recommended requirement. Full details of eligibility criteria can be found online.

The Mercantile Credit Scholarships – Part 1 Accounting (Best performance). (£250)

The Michael Davidson Travel Award – BSc Land Management students who have completed Part II (£1,000).

The Mrs Meyer Sassoon Scholarships – Faculty of Life Sciences (Travel for study purposes) (Value variable).

The Music Scholarships – Awarded annually for ability in musical performance to be judged on the basis of auditions to be held at the University. The value of the Scholarships will be up to £800. Further information is available from the Director of Music.

The Nellie B. Eales Travel Award – Final year Zoology students. Award to facilitate travel to marine biological stations etc in the UK and overseas.

The Netherfield Award – Food Technology – Awarded to competition winner (Amount variable).

The Otway Cave Scholarship – Entrance scholarship for MSc in Land Management (variable).

The Prudential Scholarship – MPhil Environmental Planning and Development. The scholarship funds fees and living expenses for two years. The student will work with Reading Borough Council one day per week during the first year and two days per week during the second year.

The R. P. Austin Travelling Scholarship – Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science (assistance towards spending a vacation in Greece).

The Rosalind Laker Prize for Creative Writing – This annual award was established by Mrs Sue Keane and Mr Paul Ovstedal in 2013 in memory of their mother, Barbara Ovstedal, who wrote under the pen name Rosalind Laker. The prize is to recognise the best piece of creative writing produced by a final year undergraduate student in the School of Literature & Languages..

The Sainsbury Scholarships – Food Biosciences (2 × £250) (1 × £500).

The Stanley Howard Hodgkin Scholarship – Used to support postgraduate scholarships in Agriculture and Horticulture.

The Sue Morgan Memorial Trust Fund – Agricultural and Food Economics, (1 × £500 to students from Africa studying Agricultural and Food Economics who are suffering financial hardship).

The Vice-Chancellor’s Bursary Fund – Three awards are made annually to support undergraduates of ability and potential with a proven need for financial assistance that cannot be met by other sources.

The West Exhibition – Faculty of Science (£5.25 and expenses to attend the British Association Conference or elsewhere at the discretion of the Faculty Board).

The William Haynes Scholarship – Awarded to the undergraduate with the highest tariff score on entry to the University (1 x £1000 for year one).

III Awards from Scholarship EndowmentsThe income from the following endowments previously used for Entrance Scholarships for Degree Courses is now available for awards to undergraduates to assist them during their courses and to assist postgraduate students:The Robert John Brooke Gill Scholarship The S. B. Stevens Scholarships Awards are made each year at the beginning of the Summer Term by the University Executive Board.

The Andrew Britton Award – For the best performance in Film Studies by a student of Film & Drama. (Amount variable).

The Barnard Education Prize – PGCE, Best student of the year (£70 in books).

The Barnard Music Prize – Best undergraduate student(s) in teacher training with a music specialism (Both PGCE and BAEd).

The Blandy’s Prize – Awarded for the best performance in Law Part 2 Writing Credits (£200). (Students based in Reading).

The Bovis Construction Award – BSc course in Building Construction Management (£50).

The Boyes Turner Prize – Awarded for the best performance in Law Writing Skills (£200). (Students based in Reading).

The Boyes Turner Prize – Awarded for the best performance by a Part 2 student in EU Law (£200). (Students based in Reading).

The Boyes Turner Prize – Awarded for the best performance by a Part F student in EU Law (£200).

The BSc (Estate Management) Club Prize – Awarded for the highest mean mark achieved by a Part III student on the Property Markets and Management package of the BSc in Land Management. (£30 in books/equipment).

The Building Magazine Prize – Construction Management and Engineering (£20 in books and one year’s subscription to Building Magazine).

The Carter Memorial Prize – Fine Art (£50).

The Chapman & Hall Book Prize (Engineering) – The student in Part II in the BEng in Electronic Engineering who achieves the best project mark. (Six books from current list).

The Chapman & Hall Book Prize – Applied Statistics, best dissertation on the MSc in Biometry (£120 in books).

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants Prize – Economics – Awarded for the best performance of an Accounting and Economics student in second year work. (£100).

The Chartered Institute of Marketing Prize – Agricultural and Food Economics (A cheque for £150) to be awarded each year to the student who attains the best overall performance in the final year of the BSc Food Marketing and Business Economics Course. The prize is provided by the Food, Drink and Agricultural Group (FDA) of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), which is charged under its affiliation to the CIM, to interact to mutual benefit with the academic world.

The Clarkslegal Prize – Awarded for the best performance in Part 2 Equity and Trust Law (£250). (Students based in Reading).

The Clarkslegal Prize – Awarded for the best performance in Part 2 Constitutional and Administrative Law (£250). (Students based in Reading).

The College of Law Pro Bono Prize – Awarded for the best performance in Part F Pro Bono Law (£200).

The Construction Management and Economics Prize – The best undergraduate dissertation in the area of Construction Management or Economics (one year’s subscription to the Journal).

The Corex Prize – PRIS; best dissertation on MSc course in Sedimentology and its applications – (1 x £100 and mounted ammonite)

The Early English Text Society’s Prize – English (one publication of the Society).

The Ede and Ravenscroft Tercentenary Award – All Faculties, student who gains the best performance in Part I Examination (5 x £200).

The Edward Guggenheim Memorial Prize – Chemistry (£40 in books).

The Elaine Care Prize – German Studies (£25).

The Environment Agency Prize – Best performance on MSc in Contaminated Land and Groundwater: Investigation and Remediation (£250).

The F.P. Pickering Memorial Prizes – German Studies and GCMS (value variable, two per annum).

The GEC Avionics Award in Optics – Physics (£150).

The GEM Prizes – BEng Building Services Engineering Design and Management course, two prizes, for the best overall performance in the final year (1 × £750 and a set of CIBSE Guides), and for the student with the best final year project (1 × £500 and a set of CIBSE Guides).

The George Reynolds Prize – Cybernetics, Part 1 (nature of prize variable).

The GlaxoSmithKline Prize – Food Biosciences and Chemistry, Course in Chemistry and Food Science, student considered to have performed best in Terms 4–6 of the course (1 × £500 to the student and 1 × £500 to the School concerned to assist with the cost of final year projects).

The GlaxoSmithKline Statistics Prize – Applied Statistics, best coursework performance on the MSc in Biometry (£300).

The GVA Grimley Prize for Building Surveying – Three prizes of £500 each to the best three Building Surveying students in Part II.

The HBG Prize at Part III (Quantity Surveying or Building Construction and Management) – One prize of £100 for the best Major Project in Part III for students studying the Quantity Surveying or Building Construction and Management degrees (or pathways in the Construction Management and Surveying degree).

The Helen Ekins Memorial Prizes – Agriculture and Horticulture, women students (£50 in books).

The Horticultural Research Association Prize – Horticulture and Landscape. (£100).

The John H. Dunning Prize – Economics (£100).

The John Roberts Prize for Professional Achievement – for the student with the best achievement on completion of the Certificate/Diploma course in Careers Guidance in Higher Education. (£50).

The Jones Lang Lasalle Fund Provide for all or part of a postgraduate excellence scholarship and an international postgraduate scholarship in Real Estate. Hardship Awards Provide for a doctoral studentsip to fund research into Real Estate if an exceptional candidate comes forward.

The KPMG Peat Marwick Prize – Accounting, second year undergraduate students (£50).

The Land Securities Trillium Prize – Real Estate and Planning. Awarded to the final year undergraduate who achieves the highest average mark over the full course of the Corporate Real Estate module in the Land Management or Investment and Finance in Property Degree (£500).

The Law School Prize – Awarded for the best overall performance in Part 1 of the Law Degree (£60). (Students based in Reading).

The Lee Swee Seng Prize – Awarded for the best performance in Part 2 International Law (RM400). (Students based in Malaysia).

Legacy Fund for Student Support – To provide financial support to students where needed. This award is available to all students of the University of Reading.
