ABSTRACT

Peni, Neni Er. 2016. Students’ Understanding on Narrative Text of the Tenth

Grade of SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus in Academic Year 2015/2016 Taught

Through Discovery Based-Learning. Skiripsi. English Education

Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Muria Kudus

University. Advisor: (1) Dr. H. A. Hilal Madjdi, M.pd, (2) Nuraeningsih,

To improve the quality of teaching and learning process, SMK PGRI 1

Mejobo Kudus has been applied the 2013 curriculum. Students are trained through

understanding on text presented by the 2013 curriculum. Narrative text is one kind

of texts that should be understood by the tenth grade students in senior high

school. But the fact, students’ understanding on narrative text is limited,

especially for the tenth grade students of SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus. According

to the characteristics of understanding, an appropriate way is teaching through

Discovery Based-Learning. Through Discovery Based-Learning is expected to

help students to analyze, identify, and understand on narrative text quickly way.

The objective of the research is to find out whether there is any significant

difference between students’ understanding on narrative text of the tenth grade of

SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus in academic year 2015/2016 before and after taught

through discovery based-learning.

To answer research question, the writer hold an experimental quantitative

research. The writer made an experimental quantitative research with one group

pre-test post-test. The writer got X TKJ 1 as a sample that consists of 37 students

by using cluster random sampling. The writer used written test of multiple choice

test consist of twenty five items to gather the data students understanding on

narrative text of the tenth grade of SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus in academic year

2015/2016 taught through discovery based-learning.

The writer carried out data analysis and tested the hypothesis. The mean

for the pre-test is 58.57 and SD is 9.137. While for the post-test the writer got the

data mean 80.01 with SD 7.98. For hypothesis testing the writer got t-obtained is

6.05 while t-critical is ± 2.042. It means that there is any significant difference

between students’ understanding on narrative text of the tenth grade of SMK

PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus in the academic year 2015/2016 before and after taught

through discovery based-learning. Then the writer concluded that discovery

based-learning is effective in students’ understanding on narrative text.

From the description above, the writer recommended some suggestions.

First, The English teacher should have full classroom control when they apply

Discovery Based-Learning in teaching process. They have to make sure all rules

in applying this method are done by the students. In the second, The English

teacher should explain the instructions clearly so that the process runs

appropriately.

ABSTRAK

Peni, Neni Er. 2016. Pemahaman tentang Teks Naratif di kelas X SMK PGRI 1

Mejobo Kudus Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016 Diajarkan Melalui Pembelajaran

Berbasis-Penemuan. Skiripsi. Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas

Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Muria Kudus. Pembimbing: (1)

Dr. H. A. Hilal Madjdi, M.pd, (2) Nuraeningsih, S.Pd, M.Pd.

Kata kunci: Kurikulum 2013, Teks Naratif, Pembelajaran Berbasis Penemuan

Untuk meningkatkan kualitas proses belajar mengajar, SMK PGRI 1

Mejobo Kudus telah menerapkan kurikulum 2013. Siswa dilatih melalui

Tetapi

kenyataannya, pemahaman siswa tentang teks naratif terbatas, terutama untuk

siswa kelas X SMK PGRI 1 Mejobo Kudus.

diajarkan melalui pembelajarn berbasis-penemuan.

Untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian, penulis mengadakan penelitian

kuantitatif eksperimental. Penulis membuat suatu penelitian kuantitatif

eksperimen dengan satu kelompok pre-test post-test. Penulis mengambil X TKJ 1

pemahaman siswa tentang narrative teks.

siswa. Kedua, guru Bahasa Inggris harus menjelaskan petunjuk jelas sehingga

proses berjalan tepat.
