Happy New Year! I wish all our readers and their families a healthy and prosperous Year of Horse.

The Year of Snake has slipped away quietly as we enter the Year of Horse. According to Chinese Zodiac, the spirit of the horse represents the Chinese people’s ethos - making unremitting efforts to improve themselves. This spirit also represents our Department and staff’s work ethos. Over the past half year, the Department progressed steadily and admitted more than 570 full-time students into its programmes. With the concerted effort of our staff members, we have formulated and implemented various learning and teaching initiatives to provide all-round support to this new cohort of students. These initiatives include the implementation of Peer Mentorship Programme and Supplemental Instruction across all our higher diploma and foundation diploma programmes. Peer Mentorship Programme aims to help new students to transit from secondary to post-secondary

learning and enable them to adapt to our new learning environment. Senior students are trained as our new students’ instructors who will provide valuable advice to them on their learning problems and questions on campus matters. Furthermore, Supplemental Instruction, which is a well-established teaching method originated from the USA, involves senior students serving as instructors to provide learning support to modules which are found to be difficult among new students. From the preliminary feedback, these two initiatives have been well-received by our new students who find them useful to support their learning. Additionally, overseas and cross-border visits have been planned and arranged for them in order to widen their learning experiences outside Hong Kong and expose them to cultures and business practices in different countries.

The Department has launched a new Higher Diploma in Marketing Management in this academic year. To strengthen the learning facilities to support this new programme and also the existing Higher Diploma in Business Administration, the Marketing and Business Management Centre was inaugurated on 13 December by an opening ceremony officiated by Dr. Sam Wong, Chairman of New Territories General Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Patrick Yu, Deputy Chairman of Marketing Services Stream of the Centre. The Centre consists of a large multi-purpose function room which can be partitioned into a large workshop fully equipped with the latest business and ERP software and computing equipment, and a 12-person seminar room available for use by students for meetings and presentations. In future, the Department plans to establish a practice retail shop under the auspice of the Centre to allow students to put the marketing and business concepts into practice and to cultivate their entrepreneurship spirits and skills.

Externally, riding on the last year‘s success, the Department works with the Department of Business Administration in the Morrison Hill campus to continue our major service project - Moot Court Competition for Hong Kong Secondary School Students, which is organized jointly with the Rotary Club of New Territories and supported by the Education Bureau and Hong Kong Association for Business Education. The Competition aims to arouse secondary students’ interests in law, enhance their understanding of the rule of law as well as their critical thinking, creativity, speaking and team work skills. The Competition received very good response and attracted 46 schools (last year: 38) to participate, but due to our capacity constraint, only 30 schools by drawing lots were able to join the Competition. The final competition, joined by 4 winning teams from the preliminary competition conducted in December, will be held in late March in the High Court. Similar to that of previous years, the Department extends its support to the operation of the BAFS Mock Examination and Review Sessions organized by the Hong Kong Association for Business Education. The Mock Examination, participated by nearly 3,000 S6 students, was successfully completed on 30 December and two Review Sessions are to be conducted in early March.

In external competition, two groups of our business and accountancy students showed very good performance to obtain two awards in the ACCA Business Competition held in November – the First Runner Up Prize and a Judges Commendation Award. The Department would offer our congratulations to them on their achievement.

Internally, the Professional Mentorship Programme, which provides a platform for our higher diploma graduating students to learn from mentors recruited from business and professional sectors, commenced with an Opening Ceremony on 31 October. The Ceremony enjoyed a great success and high turnout and was attended by over 50 mentors and 130 final year students.

Finally, the continuous growth of our Department cannot be made without the support of our students, staff and various stakeholders. To express our heartfelt appreciation, I would like to thank specially the Rotary Club members, Hong Kong Association for Business Education, mentoring lawyers for the Moot Court Competition, and business and professional partners serving in our Professional Mentorship Programme. With your valuable support and contributions, our Department is able to grow together with its students and to extend our services to Hong Kong community through our projects.

Opening Ceremony of Professional Mentorship Programme 2013/14

Being one of the signature events of the Department, the Professional Mentorship Programme held its Opening Ceremony in the evening of 30 October 2013. The programme received great support from the Rotary Club of Kowloon Northeast (RCNE) and the IVE Legal and Administrative Studies Alumni Association with their members serving as professional mentors to our graduating students together with other mentors from professional and business sectors.

With great honour, the Opening Ceremony was officiated by Mr. Eugene Yau, Assistant Governor of Area 6 of Rotary District 3450 and Mr. Jimmy Chiang, President of RCNE.

After the opening address by Mr. Kwan Wing Cheong, Principal of IVE (Tuen Mun), and the speeches by the officiating guests, the Programme was kicked off with a badge-wearing ceremony led by the Principal, followed by an interactive session whereby our student mentees were introduced to mentors from different professional and business sectors who could share their experiences and insights with the mentees under a relaxed environment. The sharing session enabled our student mentees to learn from the mentors and developed them to think critically and independently. The rich working experience of the mentors inspired our mentees deeply. Both enjoyed the sharing very much. The evening was full of laughter.

The event ended with a closing remark from Mr. David Tam, Head of BA (TM) and the masters of ceremony announcing the upcoming events of the Programme which included an Interim Gathering and Enhancement Activity, a Mentees’ Reflection Competition and a Closing Ceremony cum Graduation Dinner.

Winning through Developing a Business Proposal that Meets the Needs of the Elderly

Heartening news was brought by two teams of Higher Diploma students of BA (TM) on 30 November 2013. The teams participated in the “ACCA Hong Kong Business Competition 2013” (Sub-degree Category) which featured the theme of developing “A Sustainable Business Model in Serving the Elderly in Hong Kong”. They had to compete with about 300 participating teams from various sub-degree institutes. Our team of students of Higher Diploma in Business Administration succeeded in entering to the final competition and won the 1st Runner-up Award by their innovative and sustainable idea of “Silver Cane – a fitness centre with elderly trainers and customers”. At the same time, another team of students of Higher Diploma in Accountancy won the Judges Commendation Award in the competition. As expressed by the winners, they were delighted to participate in open competitions, not because of the award they got, but the sense of satisfaction for being recognized by professionals and able to broaden their horizons.

Linkage with Secondary SchoolsMoot Court Competition for Hong Kong Secondary School Students 2013-14

Winnie Woo

With the continued support from the Rotary Club of New Territories and the backing of the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Association for Business Education (HKABE), the competition targeted at secondary 3 to 5 students of 460 secondary schools in Hong Kong is re-launched in this academic year. The objectives of the competition are to enhance the secondary students’ awareness in rule of law and creativeness, and to strengthen their analytical and debating skills.

Apart from producing a short film based on the provided facts of a case, the participants, through role play of judges, prosecutor, witness, defending lawyers and jury, will perform the real-life court drama in front of a judging panel of legal professionals.

Prominent legal, education and society leaders including Mr. Huen Wong (Former Chairman of the Law Society of Hong Kong), Mr. Duffy Wong (Chairman of Quality Education Fund Steering Committee), the Hon. Paul Tse (Legislative Councillor), Mr. Anthony Hung (Past District Governor of Rotary International District 3450) and Mr. Henry Tong (Former President of Pok Hoi Hospital) continued their support as members of the Advisory Committee to provide advice and guidance to this competition.

About 263 students and teachers attended the briefing held simultaneously in both Tuen Mun and Morrison Hill campuses among which 152 joined the Tuen Mun workshop. The remaining ones participated at the Morrison Hill campus in the morning of 26 October 2013. During the briefing, the students were provided with the outline of the competition rules, details of the case for the preliminary competition and a brief introduction to litigation procedures.

A total of 17 legal professional mentors were introduced to the teams for further guidance on the competition. Apart from meeting with the mentors and enjoying refreshments together, the students also drew lots on their competition dates and time during the workshop.

The preliminary competition was held full day on 7 and 14 December 2013 in both Tuen Mun and Morrison Hill campuses.

As the competition rules had been changed for the final competition, the four teams that scored the highest in the preliminary competition were to be invited to attend another briefing workshop on 18 January 2014 to receive the vigorous and intense training for preparation of their final competition on 15 and 22 March 2014 at the High Court.

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education BAFS Mock Examination and Review Sessions

Tony Lim

With the support by BA (TM), the event was successfully organized by the Hong Kong Association of Business Education. The collaboration was different from that of last year as both the Mock Examination and the Review Sessions were now held in the halls of the assigned secondary schools instead of IVE campuses.

The BAFS (Business, Accounting and Financial Studies) Mock Examination was held on 31 December 2013 with an encouraging number of 2,808 participating students from 159 schools. The Mock Examination provided students with an option to choose either Accounting or Business Management Module, together with a choice of answering in English or Chinese. Participating students attempted the papers as if they were in a real examination setting.

Another major event, the Question Review and Analysis Sessions for the Accounting Module and the Business Management Module will be held respectively on 1 and 2 March 2014. From the feedback of previous years, students did comment that the event provided a good and timely way for them to practise the necessary skills for taking public examinations and facilitate their revision while the review sessions could provide useful feedback to them on their performance in the Mock Examination.

Alumni NewsIVE Legal and Administrative Studies Alumni Association Sharing Session for Final Year Students

The IVE Legal and Administrative Studies Alumni Association (LASAA) organized a sharing session for former graduates to share the experience in their work and further studies with final year students of Higher Diploma in Legal and Administrative Studies (HDLAS) and Higher Diploma in Law and Administration (HDLA) in the evening of 28 November 2013 at Tuen Mun campus. More than forty students attended the session.

Eight former graduates from different sectors were invited, including those working in the Department of Justice, in-house legal department, law firms and business companies as well as those studying top-up degrees in universities. Mr. Vic Tong, who has been working in the Department of Justice as a Law Clerk for some years, explained how he succeeded in entering into the legal department in the government. It is not easy but the prospects are good, as shared by Vic. Another graduate, Miss Jade Liu, who is now working as the Assistant Legal Manager in a listed company, shared how she succeeded in completing her law degree programme (LLB) as an external student of London University. Other graduates also shared their top-up degree experience and encouraged students to work hard. Above all, the chairman of LASAA, Mr. Joe Chan, talked about his practical experience in the commercial world. Their experience is valuable. It was no wonder why the students circled around each graduate after the sharing requesting for further chats with a lot of questions. The final year students found the session very fruitful and informative. It provided relevant and useful information for them to plan their future. It is expected that LASAA will continue to arrange this session to help final year students for their further study and future career planning.

Promotion and sale of souvenirs to tourists on Harbour Cruise Bauhinia is one of the many opportunities for industrial attachment for our students. Three teams of students of Higher Diploma in Business Administration and one team from Higher Diploma in Accountancy took part in the event from October to December 2013. The teams were given freedom to operate a small business of selling souvenirs to the tourists on the Harbour Cruise Bauhinia. During the ten-day period, students were responsible for the entire process of operating a retail business from stock replenishment, inventory control, promotion, sales to accounting. Remuneration would be given to team members at the end of the period as an incentive if sales target had been reached. Apart from grasping the opportunity of applying the skills of business operation to a real-life environment, students were also delighted that their communication and interpersonal skills were also sharpened when meeting tourists from different countries.

Visit to Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal at Hong Kong International Airport

A visit was arranged to the warehouse of Cathay Pacific (CX) Cargo Terminal at Hong Kong International Airport on 29 November 2013 as a learning activity for the module Supply Chain and Logistics. A total of 18 level 4 students of Higher Diploma in Business Administration participated in the event. Opened in 2012, the CX Cargo Terminal is one of the large-scale and representative supply chain and logistics facilities in Hong Kong. The visit was an eye-opening and real life learning experience on the operation of one of the largest warehouses in Hong Kong. The facilities observed included the import and export cargo operation, the material handling systems and the computerized central storage system, as well as the operation inside the central control room. We even had the chance to be guided into the airport restricted areas which are normally inaccessible by the general public. Students had the opportunity to watch by themselves the operation of a world-class air cargo handling terminal, which could not have been learned in classroom lectures. Students were overwhelmed by the scale of operation of the terminal and they greatly appreciated the knowledge and experience they had obtained.

Workshop on Social Manner in Cocktail Parties

A workshop on social manner in cocktail parties was organized on 11 December 2013 in collaboration with the Student Development Office. The objective of the workshop was to familiarize students with the etiquette in cocktail parties in business networking. In the workshop, the guest speaker Mrs. Maras Ying Ying Michelle from the hospitality industry introduced the do’s and don’ts in cocktail parties, covering how to dress up, how to wear name badge, how to shake hands, how to open a conversation, how to give name card, how to pick up food and how to behave, etc. After the talk, light refreshment was served so that the participants immediately had the opportunity to practise what they learnt in a simulated environment. It was then followed by the feedback and evaluation of the guest speaker.

Visit to Calbee by Marketing Management Students

Calbee Four Seas Co., Ltd. gave our students of Higher Diploma in Marketing Management (HDMM) an opportunity to visit their plant located at Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate on a warm and sunny day in December 2013. It took us quite some time to get there. However, we all found the trip wonderful, not only because of the comprehensive explanation given by Calbee staff members but also the chance of tasting freshly baked potato chips. Some interesting knowledge was acquired during the visit as, for example, the potato store room is dark, humid and warm in order to simulate the potato’s growing condition so that the potatoes can be kept fresh for a longer time there. Students were excited at the fresh potato chip trial session, especially in the hope that they would taste some special flavour chips. Eventually, they could try their favourite “Hot & Spicy” potato chips so that the tour ended up happily and the visitors were truly satisfied with the arrangement of the day.

In order to better understand what is really going on in court rooms, a visit to Tuen Mun Magistracy was arranged for Year 1 students of Higher Diploma in Law and Administration and Foundation Diploma students on 30 October 2013. We reached the court at 10:00 am and were received by Ms. Chan, the First Clerk. She explained to us the usual cases that would be heard in the Magistrates’ Courts, and outlined the functions of each court room in Tuen Mun Magistracy, such as types of cases to be heard and facilities to be found in each court room. She then arranged us to sit in a court room to hear the cases being tried, including trafficking in and possession of a dangerous drug, and claiming to be a member of a triad society. The students found the trials very interesting. In particular, they can see how some real cases are conducted in court rooms, which can be very different from what they normally see on the television.

Visit to Wholesale Market in Guangzhou

Thirty six students of Higher Diploma in Business Administration took part in the wholesale market visit to Guangzhou on 10 December 2013. The destination of the visit, Onelink International Plaza, is a well-known wholesale market for FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) and premium gifts in Guangzhou. There are also some other wholesale markets nearby.

The purposes of the visit were to widen the students’ vision in China’s wholesale and logistics industries and to help them solicit different product ideas to prepare for their forthcoming “Lunar New Year Fair Stall” projects in January 2014.

Supplemental Instruction Programme - Semester 1, 2013/14

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Programme is a platform for students to share their knowledge, experiences and techniques in learning a particular module. Senior students who have learnt a particular module before will act as instructors while students who are less skillful and confident in learning the same module as SI participants. Hence, while the SI programme can assist SI participants in handling a difficult module, it also enhances the learning of SI instructors as people can learn most when they teach someone else.

In semester 1, 2013/14, the common module Marketing in the year 1 Higher Diploma curricula was selected for the SI programme. Another module Accounting Fundamentals in the curriculum of Foundation Diploma was also chosen.

Two SI sessions were arranged for each module in November and December 2013. For the module Marketing, there were 48 instructors and 88 participants while for the module Accounting Fundamentals, a total of 30 instructors and 53 participants joined the event.

Apart from the structured SI sessions, students also organized informal study groups on their own. Regardless of the students’ difference in learning pace, the SI programme is helpful for learning and teaching, especially for those students who are positive in learning and participate actively.

Peer Mentorship Programme Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony of the Peer Mentorship Programme for 2013/14 was held on 25 September 2013. Under the programme, students of BA (TM) in the second year play the role of mentors to help new students (mentees) adapt to campus life. The opening ceremony marked the kick-off of the programme as well as the first meeting and interaction of mentors and mentees. In addition to the ice-breaking games and the group interaction, the mentors and mentees also enjoyed very much the inspiring speech on the impact of peer mentorship on personal growth given by the Senior Student Development Officer, Ms. Agnes Lam. Subsequent to the opening ceremony which has made the mentors and mentees know one another better, students can have informal gatherings on their own and join other campus activities together.

Led by class tutors, the students visited the China Import and Export Fair at Guangzhou, Shenzhen Industrial Product Museum, Tao Heung Museum of Food Culture and Wing Shing Optical Factory at Dongguan. The purposes of the tours were to widen the visions of the students in the Trade Fair, let them have a basic idea of local brand names and an understanding about the business operations and manufacturing systems in Dongguan and Shenzhen. Besides, there were seminars given and tour guides provided by the exhibitors or organizers. The students’ feedback was very positive and they thanked the receiving organizations for the arrangements.

Student Activities, Seminars and Visits
