Zaragoza is the capital of Aragón.

Its current name comes from the ancientRoman toponym, Caesaraugusta name givenin honor of Emperor Augustus in 14 BC.

Is located about 300 km from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao and Toulouse by making it an important junction.

On 12 October is the celebration of the Virgen del Pilar.

Aragón has great energy resources, andwith the development of newtechnologies and the optimusexploitation of available resources, Aragon produces almost twice theenergy output compared to its

consumption.

If the region consumed all the renewable energy it produces, arounda 70.6% of electricity consumption would be supplied by these.

Aragon has areas with greatwind resources. The Ebro Valley isthe best area in this sense, with a high speed wind known as “Cierzo”

In 2010, Aragon counted with72 wind farms and had a total of 1733 MW installed capacitywhich represent nearly 11% ofinstalled wind capacity in Spain.

BiofuelBiofuels are liquid fuelsproduced usingbiodegradable organicmaterial mainly fromenergy crops.

Vegetables species havea high content in oils or in sugars (sunflower, rape, corn, sugar cane…)andcan be trans formad intobiodiesel and bioethanol. Aragon has four of thisplants with a total capacity of 135000 tons ofvegetable oils.

In Aragon, 15% of theelectricity was generatedby coal power plants in 2009. The region has three thermal powerplants:

It´s the combinedproduction of electricityand thermal power by the same primary energysource. The region countswith an installed powercapacity of 566MW, 59% of which is in Zaragoza.

What is a geothermal plant?

• A geothermal plant is a place where we can produce electricitywith the heat of the interior of the earth.

• We can also use the heat of the earth to warm up a place like a house or a swimming pool.

1. The heated water goes fromthe geothermal reservoir tothe heat exchanger by theproduction well.

2. The heat is transmitted to thewater and it becomes in steam.

1. It’s an energy source that avoidthe dependence of the exterior.

Swimming Pool “Liceo Europa”

“Liceo Europa” is an educational centre for preschool, primary andsecondary education with two indoor swimming pools, thinking in thecompromise from the school to the renewable energies. In 2005 therewas a request of the School’s Direction to carry out and energy studyto analyse energy use in the school. The direction decided to build a

geothermal system to warm up the swimming pools.

Wastewater treatment plant of the Almozara

The plant collects wastewater from an area west of the city of Zaragoza.It is designed for a population equivalent of 100,000 inhabitants, with a daily flow of 34,560 m3.

The main objective of the actions undertaken in the wastewater treatment is the maximization of the potential of the biogas generated in anaerobic digestion to produce electricity, so as to reduce significantly the need to consume external power to the plant.
