Ideology center

Our school develops its education, according to the educationalstyle of the Salesians and its founder Don Bosco.

• Help students to live fully their aspirations through reason, kindness, and religion.

• Create an educational environment where young people are theprotagonists of educational action by the spirit of family, daily work, the invitation to creativity and the atmosphere of joy and celebrationthat characterizes us.

• The familiarity and respect between educators and students.

• The proposal of Christian commitment to the world and society

Aragón is located at the heartof the northeast quarter of Spainregions with highet economicactivity, which are Madrid, Cataluña,País Vasco andValencia.

This location alows a reductionin cost and time in thetransportation of raw materialsand final products.

Socio-economic impact of the energy sector in Aragón

One of the main social impacts of the renewable energy in Aragón in the growth in employment. Nowadays, there are more energycompanies.

These companies dealing in a wide variety of activities, from thedesing and manufacturing of components to the exploitation andmaintenance of the power plants. Aming to support, Spanish PublicAdministration promoted the Renewable Energy Plan andAragonese Energy Plan.

Energy production in Aragón

Aragón has great energy resources, andwith the development of newtechnologies and the optimusexploitation of available resources, Aragon produces almost twice theenergy output compared to its

consumption.

If the region consumed all the renewable energy it produces, arounda 70.6% of electricity consumption would be supplied by these.

Wind energy

Aragon has areas with greatwind resources. The Ebro Valley isthe best area in this sense, with a high speed wind known as “Cierzo”

In 2010, Aragon counted with72 wind farms and had a total of 1733 MW installed capacitywhich represent nearly 11% ofinstalled wind capacity in Spain.

Solar energy

Aragon has one of thegreatest rates of solar radiation of 1400 KWh/m2 year Andover 2500 hours ofsunshine per year.

There are two types ofsolar plants:

•Solar thermal

•Photovoltaic (PV)

Page 58: Students Presentation Second Meeting Comenius

Solar thermal

It´s normally used fordomestic hot water andheating in the industrial, residential, commercial andservices sectors.

Solar thermal systems tendto be rather small and wecan find many of themspread throughout theRegion.

Biogas in Aragón Biogas is produced by thefermentation of organicmatter from urban solidwaste, livestock waste andmunicipal waste.

Its explotation isconsidered an alternativeto waste managementtrough the energyvalorisation avoidingpollution and enviromentalimpact.

Aragón has one of theseplants since 2009, it has a procesing capacity around

450000 Tm/year

BiofuelBiofuels are liquid fuelsproduced usingbiodegradable organicmaterial mainly fromenergy crops.

Vegetables species havea high content in oils or in sugars (sunflower, rape, corn, sugar cane…)andcan be trans formad intobiodiesel and bioethanol. Aragon has four of thisplants with a total capacity of 135000 tons ofvegetable oils.

Coal-fired thermal plants

In Aragon, 15% of theelectricity was generatedby coal power plants in 2009. The region has three thermal powerplants:

One in Andorra (1101MW) and two in Teruel, Escucha powerplant (160MW) andEscatrón power plant(80MW)

Combined cycle powerplants represented 25% of the total powercapacity in 2010 inAragón.

Generation of combinedcycles plants in 2009 was6472395MWh, of which62% was produced by the Castelnou Plant.

Combined heat and Power Plant

It´s the combinedproduction of electricityand thermal power by the same primary energysource. The region countswith an installed powercapacity of 566MW, 59% of which is in Zaragoza.

Natural gas is the mostcommon fuel in theseplants, nearly the 90% ofthe primary energyconsumption.

What is a geothermal plant?

• A geothermal plant is a place where we can produce electricitywith the heat of the interior of the earth.

• We can also use the heat of the earth to warm up a place like a house or a swimming pool.

Page 68: Students Presentation Second Meeting Comenius

1. The heated water goes fromthe geothermal reservoir tothe heat exchanger by theproduction well.

2. The heat is transmitted to thewater and it becomes in steam.

3. The steam moves the turbineand generate electricity.

4. The steam becomes in waterin the condensator to repeatthe process.

How does it works?

Page 69: Students Presentation Second Meeting Comenius

7,8,9 March 2012

Advantages

1. It’s an energy source that avoidthe dependence of the exterior.

2. It produces less waste that petroland coal.

3. It has very low costs.

4. It doesn’t produces noisy.

5. Geothermal resources are biggerthan petrol, coal, natural gas anduranium, all together.

6. It hasn’t international prices, it has only local prices.

7. We need less terrain to build a geothermal plant.

8. It doesn’t produces much CO2.

1. In certain cases it produces sulfuric acid that can be verydangerous.

2. It can contaminate close waterwith arsenic or ammonia.

3. It produces thermal pollution.

4. It spoils the lanscapes.

5. The geothermal energy can’t be transportated (like a primaryenergy).

6. It can be used only in certainplaces.

“Liceo Europa” is an educational centre for preschool, primary andsecondary education with two indoor swimming pools, thinking in thecompromise from the school to the renewable energies. In 2005 therewas a request of the School’s Direction to carry out and energy studyto analyse energy use in the school. The direction decided to build a

geothermal system to warm up the swimming pools.

Energy production from biomass is the energy valorisation of renewable organic material ( food industries, agriculture and any natural or artificial transformation of it) as energy source to obtain heat and/or electricity.

Biomass energy

Page 74: Students Presentation Second Meeting Comenius

Second meeting Comenius EEQCODE: 2011-1-ES1-COM06-34249

7,8,9 March 2012

1. Biomass collection is prepared for conversion into liquid fuel.

2. This fuel is burned and heated water.

3. It produces high pressure steam turbine that drives this in turn drives the generator to produce electricity.

4. The electrical energy is carried by power lines

5. The heat produced by the steam is transmitted in the form of hot water.

How does it works?

Page 75: Students Presentation Second Meeting Comenius

Second meeting Comenius EEQCODE: 2011-1-ES1-COM06-34249

7,8,9 March 2012

1. Reduction of CO2 emissions2. It does not emit pollutants or

nitrogen sulforados or just solid particles.

3. When using other activities such as waste biomass, this translates into a reduction of waste recycling.

4. It may cause an increase in rural economic

5. It reduces dependence on external fuel supplies.

DisadvantagesAdvantages

1. It has a higher cost of production compared to energy to fossil fuels.

2. Low energy efficiency of fuels derived from biomass compared with fossil fuels.

3. seasonal production4. The raw material is a low energy

density which means much volume occupied and therefore it may have problems with transport and storage.

5. Packaging or processing need to use.

Wastewater treatment plant of the Almozara

The plant collects wastewater from an area west of the city of Zaragoza. It is designed for a population equivalent of 100,000 inhabitants, with a daily flow of 34,560 m3.

The main objective of the actions undertaken in the wastewater treatment is the maximization of the potential of the biogas generated in anaerobic digestion to produce electricity, so as to reduce significantly the need to consume external power to the plant.

1. It's clean, it doesn´t pollute the air or water

2. They don´t require, but use a renewable form of energy by nature free

3. It can often be combined with other benefits such as irrigation, flood protection, water supply, roads, navigation and even protection of the land and tourism

1. Capital costs per kilowatt installed are often very high

2. The sitting of a hydroelectric station could be costly and expensive

3. The construction usually takes a long time
