students of the worldStudents of the World began as an idea conceived by a college student in 1999. The premise was that the next generation of American leaders would be citizens of the United States but also must be students of the world.
What is a student of the world? Someone who is curious about other cultures and compassionate enough to explore them first hand. A person who listens to the stories of others and returns home to share what she has learned. With these motives in
mind, a team of ten Duke students journeyed to Kitezh, Russia to learn from and document a unique orphan community near Moscow that combines features of an orphanage with foster care. They returned home with black and white photographs, hand-written journals chronicling their experiences and an incredible story to tell. Over 250 students, 45 organizations and 24 countries later, SOW is now a national movement.
Our purpose is to shine a light on progress happening all over the world. To focus the lens on those individuals and organizations who are fighting on the front lines of human rights and social justice. To capture stories of solutions, hope and lives changed - from solar lanterns in India, to financial inclusion in Kosovo, rehabilitation programs in Northern Uganda, sustainable housing in New Orleans, and programs of conflict resolution in Israel & the West Bank. We envision a generation of Americans who have the desire to know, the power to see, and the will to use their creative capacity to spark awareness of and activism for their global community.
We work closely with our creative student teams to produce powerful multimedia content that includes short films, vignettes, photo stories, audio slideshows, written articles, graphic animation and more. With more than 11 years of experience, a full range of professional equipment and the best post-production partners in Austin, we are able to produce professional quality media that is unique, powerful and engaging.

what we doStudents of the World (SOW) connects the creative capacity of college students with organizations around the globe, using digital storytelling to capture the work they do and the lives they change. We produce powerful documentary-style media that educates, enagages and highlights stories of positive change.
HIGH QUALITY MULTIMEDIA
We work closely with our creative student teams to produce powerful multimedia content that includes short films, vignettes, photo stories, audio slideshows, written articles and more. With more than 10 years of experience, a full range of professional equipment and the best post-production partners in Austin, we are able to produce professional quality media that is unique, powerful and engaging.
We recruit teams of college students that are highly skilled in filmmaking, editing, photography, journalism, graphic design and new media management. We are currently operating at the University of Michigan, the University of Texas, the University of North Carolina, Duke University, Boston University, the University of Virginia and Harvard University.

Students of the World is founded in 1999 at Duke University. The inaugural trip is to Kitezh, Russia, where the Duke team documented the Kitezh Children’s Eco Village, an innovative grass-roots community created for foster families of orphan children.
Duke SOW presents their work at the Duke University Center for Documentary Studies, exhibits their photographs on campus and speaks to elementary classrooms about issues regarding Russian orphans.

Texas SOW travels to Guatemala to work with Mayalan to study the indigenous Mayan population, human rights abuses, and the aftereffects of the 36-year civil war that ended in 1996.
Michigan SOW debuts “Nation Positive,” a touring multimedia exhibition based on their time in South Africa, at 4731 Gallery in Detroit.
The fourth SOW chapter is founded at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A joint SOW team from Duke and UNC engages in an investigative comparison of governmental and private responses to HIV/AIDS in China.
SOW makes a two-year commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI).

The Duke team holds joint discussions and display their photography on campus. The India team also holds a lecture event on campus, cosponsored by the Kenan Institute for Ethics and the Department of Economics.
SOW expands to Brown University and Columbia University.
Texas SOW documents Playing For Peace, a program that uses basketball to foster tolerance between Jewish and Arab youth within Israel and the West Bank.
Short films from all five trips are screened at the Clinton Global Initiative annual summit in New York City. SOW photography is also utilized at the event.
SOW begins its first domestic project, studying the Broadmoor Improvement Association’s efforts to rebuild the Broadmoor neighborhood in New Orleans.
Columbia SOW travels to Tanzania to document Africare’s holistic program, COPE, which helps orphaned and vulnerable children. Their short film was screened at Africare’s annual gala event in Washington, D.C.
New SOW chapters are founded at The University of Texas and the University of Michigan. New SOW Member of the Texas/Michigan team travel to Gulu, Uganda to document the conflict and its effect on AIDS in the region. They begin to work on a feature length documentary, “The Children’s War” which as of Fall 2008 is in the final stages of post-production.

The Students of the World Summit: (Re)engage for Good brought Students of the World Alumni, current team members, supporters and partners to Austin for a weekend that included a Friday evening discussion at the Livestrong Headquarters, and panels focusing on leveraging the power of social media for good and understanding global change with leaders in the field of social documentaries, international health care, and the non-profit sector.
The Saturday evening Gala was the largest, most successful Students of the World event held to date. The evening included speeches from special guests Dr. Paul Farmer, founder of Partners in Health and United Nations Deputy Special Envoy for Haiti, and Cheryl Mills, Counselor and Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

My experience in the SOW program defined my undergraduate experience, and ignited my passion to use documentary media to foster positive change in the world.

The SOW staff consists of three full-time employees, whose collective travel experience ranges from Jordan to Tanzania to Cambodia. During the summer, the SOW office brings on part-time employees and consultants, who are often SOW alumni, to contribute creatively to our projects.
Grounded in its collaborative beginnings, SOW values our partnerships above all else - our partnerships with students, clients and our post-production partners. Our best-in-class partner organizations provide exposure and guidance to our students while contributing directly to our projects. Our long-standing relationships during post -production include the following: Pony Sound, Tequila Mockingbird Music House, 1080 Inc. and GSD&M’s Idea City Advertising.
