TEACHINGTANDEM, Escuela Internacional has a highly qualified,enthusiastic and professional team of teachers, whoseobjective is to help you learn Spanish and discover theSpanish culture. Accordingly, we take a communicativeapproach to learning, with exceptionally qualified andmotivated teachers.

We employ only native speakers with an Universitydegree in Spanish studies and native speakers.

Our levels follow the “Instituto Cervantes” guidelines incombination with the “Common European Framework ofReference for Languages”.

TIMETABLE OF CLASSESMonday to Friday: from 9.00h - 12.15h for intensive courses.

There are also classes at different times in theafternoons (evening classes, exam preparation courses,one-to-one classes, group program etc.).

There is one coffee break from 10:15-10:30 during whichyou can buy tea and coffee from a coffee dispenser orgo out to a coffee shop. You have one teacher for all thelessons and you normally stay in the same classroom allmorning.

We then have fun eating andenjoying a glass of Spanish wine together.Wednesday: We take a walk through “Madrid de losAustria o de los Borbones” to soak up the city’sarchitecture and history.Thursday: We go to a concert, a play or a performancethat speaks to us of Spanish culture.Friday: We organize a party in a fashionable bar forSpanish students at TANDEM and then go on to anightclub together.Saturday or Sunday: We travel to nearby towns withan immense cultural and artistic heritage, such asToledo, Segovia, Ávila and El Escorial.

TANDEM, Escuela Internacional is a prestigious schoolwith a successful track record in teaching Spanish since1982. Our school is an independent company with itsown personality, which is innovative, experienced, andquality-oriented. In Madrid’s “Writers’ District”–the literary, cultural and intellectual centre of Madrid,where Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo and Góngoralived, where Tirso de Molina and Calderón de la Barcastaged their plays, where Quixote was conceived andborn. This was a meeting place for writers, actors andthe socialites of the Austrias district– the creativeforces behind the Spanish Golden Century.

THE METHODThe objective of all TANDEM’s teachers is to ensure thathis or her student is able to communicate effectively inSpanish.

And for this to happen, they pay attention to some veryimportant aspects: firstly, a well-prepared class withclear objectives with special emphasis on the differentlanguage skills. Secondly, they take into account theemotional dimension of learning and positive feedback,which allows the student to free his or her creativepotential. And, thirdly, they take a student-orientedapproach, recognizing that each person has a differentway of learning.

The classes are organized into small groups with amaximum of 10 students per class, and held in largeand luminous classrooms equipped with the mostmodern audio-visual resources.

The first day we organize an introduction to TANDEM’sleisure cultural program and an orientation to thepossibilities Madrid offers during leisure time. You can find information of the cultural program on the bulletin board. The person in charge of the culturalprogram will answer your questions and will also buy the tickets for the theatre or any other eventsorganized by TANDEM.

CULTURAL PROGRAMOn the other side we organize lots of socialactivities every week such us:

BY TRAIN: The Cercanías local train network expandswith a new route connecting Príncipe Pío station toBarajas Airport Terminal 4 station through the new C-1line. Trains depart every half hour and ticket prices areavailable on thislink. AVE ticket holders can travel fromthe train station to the airport free of charge.

BY TAXI: To take a taxi, you need to go to theappropriate taxi rank. No attention should be paid to theunofficial taxi drivers offering their services from withinthe terminals. The taxi driver should set the taxi meterrunning at the start of the journey. The fare from Barajasairport to the centre of Madrid is generally between 30and 40 euros.

Single tickets are purchased on the bus (have changeready, only 5 EUR banknotes are accepted) and the 10-trip ticket is available at official tobacco shops (Estancos)at some newsagents as well as the Metro ticket office.

WEATHERMost of the Autonomous Region of Madrid has acontinental climate with temperatures that range from32º F (0º Celsius), or slightly lower in the winter, to up to104º F (40º C) in the summertime. Yet, the temperaturesin the northern mountainous area of the region are muchcolder than those mentioned above in the winter andmilder in the summer.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

The goal of this Program is to improve your knowledgeof Spanish through an internship in a company inMadrid. Students will be placed in companies accordingto their abilities, interests and field of study and/orprofessional experience. COURSES TO PREPARE SPANISH EXAMS

DELE EXAMS“A real challenge” The official exams ofthe Instituto Cervantes are the mosteffective and universal way to certifyyour knowledge. In addition, preparingthese exams is a personal and motivating challenge thatoffers great satisfaction to language students. Our Spanish school is an examining centre for the D.E.L.E. exams in Madrid.

WHAT ARE THE DELE DIPLOMAS?The D.E.L.E. («Diploma de Español como LenguaExtranjera / Diploma of Spanish as a foreign language»)diplomas issued by the Ministry of Education andScience are acknowledged internationally by privatecompanies, Chambers of commerce and public andprivate institutions.

COURSES FOR PREPARING DELEThere are four types of courses for preparing eachof the exams and consequently, four types of diplomascan be obtained: A1, Certificado Inicial (Initial Certificate)(CIE), Diploma intermedio (Intermediate Diploma) (DIE)and the Diploma Superior (Superior Diploma) (DSE). TANDEM MADRID can prepare all levels, all year long.

DATESDELE course dates vary from year to year, depending onthe date of the exam established by the SpanishMinistry of Education and Science. For practicalreasons, most students take this exam in Spain,although it is also possible to take abroad. The examfee is established every year by the Instituto Cervantesand by each examining centre. The deadline for enrollingis usually one month before the exam date. Our courses includes 1 month of the DELE ONLINEcourse (20 hours).

IMMERSION SEMINAR IN MADRIDMade to measure. From 1 week our team will customise a programme forthe participant and will enable him/her to effectivelycommunicate in Spanish, improving communication inthe professional environment. TANDEM offers a professional accommodationservice. The accommodation you choose will play animportant part in your experience and we are here toguide and help you choose the best option.

There are several accommodation options to choosefrom, all of which are carefully selected, continuouslychecked, and located close to the school.

RULES FOR THE STUDENTS• It is necessary that you tell your host family and shared

flat at least 2 days before arrival the approximate arrivaltime. If the student does not communicate the arrivaltime and due to this cause he does not find the owne,there will not be refunds if the student takes a room in ahotel, hostal or other accommodation.

• On arrival you will receive the keys, so you will be ableto enter and leave the house whenever you want.

• We kindly ask you to be discrete when entering andleaving the house. If you stay away for the night, pleasetell your host family so they do not worry about you. Incase of shared flats it is not compulsory to do that.

• In case that you booked halfboard, this consists inbreakfast and dinner. If you should not be able to takethe dinner for any reasons, please tell the host family inadvance, so they don’t have any unnecessary work. Incase of accommodation with a family, it is forbidden touse the kitchen.

• You are not allowed to bring friends to the flat unlessyou get the explicit permission of the familiy. Anyway,visitors have to leave before 21h.

• The student is responsible for the cleaning of his room.

• It is not allowed to make phone calls, only to receive them.

• The student has the right to have a shower once a dayand to wash his clothes once a week (ironing will bedone by the student himself). If it is necessary the student can handwash his clothes anytime he wants to.

• Any change of the dates or the meals that the studentwants to make, must be communicated to the secretaryof the school first. The school will communicate thechanges to the family.

• If there will be any problem with the housing,please communicate to the secretary of the schoolimmediately which will communicate the problemto the accommodation department so we will find a solution quickly.

We place great effort in finding specialaccommodation that will make your stay in Spainworthwhile and memorable.

We hope that the care that your host family places intheir work will help you understand a lot aboutSpanish culture and will help you to experience itfirst hand. If, however, you have questions orconcerns regarding you accommodation, please donot hesitate to contact the Housing Coordinators.

Please keep in mind as well, that it takes about oneweek to adapt to the household and that you shouldtry to be as flexible as is comfortable and possible for you.

MINIMUM AGEMinimum age to enroll in the school is 16.For students under 18, the school needs that a legalrepresentative or legal guardian of the minor acceptsthe terms and conditions of the school.

ACCOMMODATIONS ARRIVALSAND DEPARTURESStudents have to inform the agent about their arrivaldetails: day, time, flight number, etc., at least 15 daysbefore the arrival date. This is very important for us toarrange that someone will be waiting for the student inthe apartment and provide him/her with the key whenthey arrive in Madrid.Students should arrive on Sunday before the beginningof the course.One week before the beginning of the course will sendyou their accommodation details (name, address...).Students have to check out before 12:00 pm on Saturday after the end of their course.Arriving and departing on different days to the onesexposed above is possible if paying an extra charge(extra nights might be possible at extra cost).

AIRPORT TRANSFERSOur school can also pick the students up at the airport. Ifthe student wants this service the agent has to book it 1week before his/her arrival.

INSURANCEOur students are insured by the school, inside the schoolthrough a third party and outside the school in theactivities organized by the school (trips, extra activitiesoutside the school...).Our students ARE NOT insured by the school againstillness, accident, theft, loss of personal effects, or anyother inconvenience. The school will not accept anyresponsibility for such occurrences.The student should check if his home country has anykind of medical arrangement with the Spanish SocialSecurity.The citizens of European Community should obtain theTSE (Sanitary European card). This is an individual cardto obtain assistance during a temporal period in any cityof European community or Switzerland. Non-European community citizens should have aninternational health insurance policy valid for Spain.

MEDICAL INSURANCEThe School offers the possibility of arranging a medicalinsurance for students at an extra cost.

CANCELLATION, POSTPONEMENTOR CURTAILMENT OF A COURSEThe minimum number of students per class is 3 and the maximum is 10 in morning groups. For extensivecourses, the minimum is 4 and the maximum is 12.

If a minimum number of students do not register for a group,TANDEM Madrid reserves the right to cancel the course up to6 days prior to the course start date. In such cases alsoTANDEM offers the possibility to the student to be place in asmaller group (2 students) and free registration on theInternet Online Spanish Course (AVE) or individual classes(INTENSIVE COURSE= 2 individual classes/day 1h 30minutes). Classes are given from Monday to Friday.

If cancellations are made 2 weeks or more prior to the coursestart date, TANDEM MADRID will refund the full cost of theprogramme (if full payment was made in advance), less thecourse deposit of 200€.

No refunds will be given for courses that are cancelled within15 days of the course start date.

For cancellation of courses that require the school’sconfirmation to apply for a grant / financial aid from thirdparties (visa, government, universities, etc.), the officialletter of rejection from the organisation awarding the grantwill be required in order to obtain a refund of the advancepayment (minus the deposit of 200€).

No cancellations will be accepted unless made in writing. For security reasons, cancellations cannot be made over the telephone.

Registrations are accepted on the assumption that thestudent will stay for the duration of the course specified inthe registration form. No refunds will be given for coursesor parts of courses that were not taken by the student dueto illness, early departure, delays in arrival, etc.

PUBLIC HOLIDAYSThere will be no lessons on public holidays. You can check dates on this manual.No compensation will be made for these days.

TIMETABLEThe School expects that all students will fulfill correctly allclass schedules, respecting thus the rest of students.Students will have to complete and send to us the leveltest at least one week before the start of the course.

Duration of class hours is 45 minutes.09:00 to 10:30 Intensive Course. 10:30 to 10:45 Break.10:45 to 12:15 Intensive Course.

FIRST DAY OF CLASSOn the first Monday of his/her course, the student willcome to the school at 8:45 am.Student will come to the school secretary where he/shewill be given the welcome pack and will be told theclass to attend depending of his/her group.

NOTE: We want to remind everyone that the first day ofclass everything is new for you and for us, so please KEEP CALM if you have any problems or complaintsregarding your accommodation, classes, etc. Once youfinish your lessons come to the secretary and we will try tosolve your questions and find solutions for your problems.

CERTIFICATESAll students who made a Spanish course in Our School will receive a School Certificate that follows the level system of the “InstitutoCervantes” and the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages”.

STUDENTS BEHAVIORThe school expects from the student that he/she followssome basic norms of behavior that affect the School andthe accommodations.

In case of any inappropriate or unacceptable behavior,the student may be required to leave immediately inwhich case no refund will be made. The School is theonly arbiter in such cases to decide what constitutesserious misconduct. In any case, ALL students will berequired to pay for any damages caused.
