Students enrolled into the program must:• havean80percentattendancerecordoftraining
sessionsandactivitiesovertheperiodoftheprogram• takepartinthepracticalandtheoryassessment
processand• bedeemedcompetentbytheprogramcoordinator.
AllequipmentassociatedwiththeprogramisprovidedbytheNSWRFS.StudentsparticipatingintheprogramwillbeoutfittedwithNSWRFSpersonalprotectiveclothingandequipmentwhichisreturnedatthecompletionoftheprogram.
Delivery the programWhiletheprogramisdeliveredbyNSWRFSmemberstheschoolisrequiredtosupporttheprogrambyprovidingsupervisionduringtrainingsessions.

About the NSW Rural Fire ServiceTheNSWRuralFireService(NSWRFS)istheworld’slargestvolunteerfireservice–ourorganisationhasmorethan70,000hardworking,professionalanddedicatedvolunteersincommunitiesrightacrossNewSouthWales.
Volunteershavebeenprotectinglocalcommunitiesfrombushandgrassfiresformorethan100years.Today,ourvolunteersperformawidevarietyofrolesandattendarangeofemergencieslikebushandgrassfires,houseandstructurefires,roadaccidentsaswellasprovideassistanceatothereventslikefloods,stormsandsearches.
Wealsoaimtoreducetheimpactofbushfiresbyreducinghazardsandeducatingthecommunityaboutfirepreventionandprecautions.
The Secondary Schools Cadet Program TheNSWRFSSecondarySchoolsCadetProgramisagreatwayforstudentstolearnnewskillswhichwilllastthemalifetime.TheprogramprovidesYear9and10studentswithaninsightintofiresafetyandpreventionwhilstdevelopingpracticallifeskillsandageneralappreciationofcommunityserviceandvolunteerism.
Theaimoftheprogramisto:• DevelopaninterestintheNSWRFSanditstraditions• Providecadetswithaknowledgeoffiresafetyand
preparedness• Developthequalitiesofleadership,self-discipline,self-
reliance,initiativeandteamwork• EncouragecadetstocontinueserviceintheNSWRFSor
othercommunityserviceorganisations• ProvidetrainingthatcancontributetoNSWRFSfirefighter
andotherspecialisttraining.
Thesequalificationscanbeusedinlaterlife,whetherit’sforworkorforjoiningavolunteerruralfirebrigade.
TheSecondarySchoolsCadetProgramcanbelinkedtoNSWPersonalDevelopment,HealthandPhysicalEducation(PDHPE)Years7-10Syllabus.

Program overviewThemajorityoftheprogramisbasedonpracticalactivitieshowevertheremaybesometheoryinvolved.Weencourageourmemberstotailortheprogramtosuittheirlocalcommunity.Typically,theprogramwillrunovera10weekperiodwith1–2hoursofinstructionperweek.Belowisanexampleofa10weekSecondarySchoolsCadetProgram.
Week:1. OverviewoftheNSWRFSandfirebehaviour2. StructureoftheNSWRFS,vehiclesandfamiliarisation3. NSWRFSrankandbushfirefightingequipment4. Emergencyservicesinthelocalcommunity5. Bushfiresurvivalplanandemergencydrills6. Casualtyassistance7. Practicalscenarios8. Brigadevisitsandextinguishers9. Practicalscenariosandrevision10. Finaltheoryandpracticalassessmentandpresentationof
certificates.
TheprogramisprimarilycoordinatedanddeliveredbyNSWRFSvolunteersandthereforetheavailabilityofthesepersonnelwilldetermineboththeclasssizeandwhentheprogramcanbeheld.
Usuallyclasssizesarearound15-20students;ideallyclasseswillbeheldmidweekintheafternoon(1.00pmto3.00pmforexample).
Duringtheprogramstudentswillbedividedintoteamsoffivetosixstudents,wheretheywilldevelopleadershipandteamworkskills.
