PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Term 4 is officially ending, with this newsletter the last of the year. Some of the highlights of 2019 include:

• the establishment of the Bush Tucker Garden, introduction of Gamilaroi language and the start of an Aboriginal Education Team

• the increase in Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) reward events and students participating in them

• overnight excursions running for every student in the school • increased community engagement at events such as NAIDOC Day and both

Athletic and Swimming Carnivals • the P&C running a BBQ before Presentation Night • new technology to support student learning, such as the Oculus Quest, desktops

and laptops • Growth Days taking place each term for K-12 to build students Growth Mindset,

resilience and understanding of different themes.

As I mentioned at Presentation Night, my substantive school requires me to return for 2020. I’m very disappointed not to continue at Binnaway next year, however, Ms Corbett as AP and Ms Fraser as HT will ensure there is continuity and stability. Mrs Thompson was appointed as our permanent School Administration Manager earlier in the term and will ensure teachers and students continue to be supported effectively. Other staffing changes include Ms Bunter finishing at the end of term, who has done a lot of great visual art lessons across K-10. Ms Lyddiard was here for two days last week and will be the new HSIE teacher. Next year we’re running Year 11 Work Studies in addition to the mandatory 7-10 History and Geography, so it is a great opportunity for students to be better prepared for life after school. Mrs Marsh will continue on K/1/2 in Term One and then we hope to have Mrs Hutchison return. Mr Sulter will be teaching three days a week next year, with Gamilaroi being taught as our mandatory Year 7 and 8 Language Other Than English (LOTE). Photos from our PBL Reward trip to Dubbo are included later in the newsletter. Spending time with our students to celebrate their success was very enjoyable. All students behaved well and were patient when technical issues delayed our time on the water slide. Older students stepped up to help the younger on the slide, demonstrating the Binnaway family spirit. Day-to-day we sometimes see students have an off day, as we all do occasionally, but we’re always very proud of them on excursions. I wish everyone a fantastic Christmas and a wonderful 2020. Andrew Glazebrook Relieving Principal

SECONDARY NEWS Last report for the 2019 academic school year. Our students travelled to Dubbo on Monday December 16th to attend the end of year PBL reward day. Hard to believe we are at this time of year again. We have had painters in the school over the past week – painting exteriors and classrooms. Our students are complaining about the smell of paint, but some of our classrooms are being given a much needed coat of paint, and the results will be appreciated long after the smell of fresh paint has gone. I would like to thank all teaching staff – both Primary and Secondary for their efforts to both teach the curriculum and manage the overall welfare of our students. Binnaway Central School is lucky to have such a dedicated group of teachers who go above and beyond what can be reasonably expected of them. I would also like to thank all casual teachers who have assisted us keep our classes operating during the absence of staff. Thank you also to all ancillary staff – grounds, cleaning, and Admin. A special thank you to Ainsley and Sarina for the work they do in the front office, and to Carol who takes far greater care of our school than her position warrants. Mr Andrew Glazebrook, our Relieving Principal, is returning to his school at the end of the year. Thank you to Andrew for his time spent in this role. Ms Maddy Bunter is leaving us also at the end of the year. Ms Bunter has continued to develop the skills of our students in the area of Visual Arts. I wish both well in their future positions. Ms Kate Lyddiard will be joining us next year to teach Stage 4 and 5 HSIE. Ms Lyddiard visited the school last Wednesday and Thursday to meet our staff and students. We look forward to having Ms Lyddiard on staff in 2020. Also joining the Secondary staff in 2020 will be Mr David Sulter. Mr Sulter is keen to develop Aboriginal education in the school, and is the elected Chairperson of our recently formed Aboriginal Education Team. Mr Sulter will be teaching Stage 4 students, including Gamilaroi language as our mandatory LOTE. Wednesday December 11th and Thursday December 12th the Secondary department conducted our Year 6 – 7 transition, and welcomed our current Year 6 students into the Secondary. Our three Year 6 students: Ebeni Thompson, Cory Surplice and Jasmine Baillie were able to sample a taste of what life in “big school” will be like in 2020.

We thank them for their efforts over the two days, and look forward to welcoming them into the Secondary department full-time from next year. We held our Presentation Evening last Thursday December 12th. Congratulations to all award winners. Thank you to all staff who attended on the evening and assisted and all staff who assisted with the preparation for the evening. A particular thank you to Sarina Schwarze from the Office who was my main support in preparing for the evening. Congratulations to Brendan Peters who will be our Secondary leader for 2020. Thank you to Claire Jones who was our Secondary leader for 2019. Year 8 student Marcus Nolan received a lot of Sporting Awards at our Presentation Evening at a school, state and national level. Marcus has just returned from the National titles in Perth where he gained a silver in the long jump, and a bronze in the 800 metres. Congratulations to Marcus, and thank you to mum Judy, and his family for supporting him in his endeavours. Wishing all our students and families a very safe and happy holiday. Have a great Christmas. We look forward to seeing all our students back on Wednesday January 29th 2020.

PRIMARY NEWS Well here we are at the end of another school year! Your children have grown and completed another year of their schooling and we have had the joy of being a part of sharing in that.

Ebeni Thompson, Jasmine Baillie and Cory Surplice have now finished their primary school years and will begin their high school journey in 2020. Our K-6 faculty acknowledged their milestone with our disco on Tuesday night and there were laughs and tears as we watched the photos reflecting our Year 6’s years of school. It has been an absolute pleasure working with them these past 2.5 years and I look forward to watching them succeed in high school.

Our annual school presentation night was also a warming showcase of our students’ achievements throughout the year and I know parents and teachers alike smile, applaud and get a little glisten in their eye as we reward their efforts. Thank you to all the parents and family members that attended this evening to share in this joy. I would also like to thank the P&C for the family BBQ that was run prior to the presentation, it created a wonderful opportunity for students, families and staff to come together.

We also got to thank our students for their positive behaviour shown throughout the year with the PBL Rewards trip to Dubbo Aquatic Centre on Monday. The K-6 staff were very proud (and not surprised) that all of K-6 students were eligible for this event. A great day was had by all and I feel very confident in assuming that all students came home rather tired and were keen for an early night!

Today we finished the school year with a pool party, which is always well received by our students. Teaching is just like parenting in that it is by no means rainbows and sparkles everyday but overall it brings us joy, satisfaction and great pride in the little people whose journey we have the privilege of being a part of.

We wish our students and their families a safe and joyous Christmas, bringing in 2020 surrounded by the love of family, laughter, good health.

From Ms Corbett, Miss Hunter, Mrs Hutchison, Mrs Marsh and Miss Mel. Ms Denise Corbett Assistant Principal

Marcus Nolan: A Champion From The Bush

Marcus Nolan is a 15 year old boy from Neilrex, regional NSW who is an exceptional athlete. When asked what he considers to be his best achievements he responded: “Athletics – long jump and 800 metres.” This was BEFORE Marcus’ recent return from the Nationals in Perth where he gained a silver medal in the long jump and a bronze medal in the 8oo metres. Marcus does his training after school in the gym in Binnaway while mum Judy works. Training is an activity where Marcus has family support. There is no professional trainer involved, no professional equipment used, just Marcus, his mum Judy, Auntie Sarah, brothers Albert and Kevin. Marcus described how his mum Judy drives him 3 kilometres out of Neilrex so he has the road to himself to run on. He also goes to the river with his dog to run on the sand to build strength in his legs. His brother Albert has shown him how to train – to jog, then sprint. Marcus trains by himself, is not part of an athletics club, so the only time he gets to compete is at school, State and then Nationals. Marcus is a talented swimmer, as well as cross-country runner and athlete. To train for swimming, Marcus goes to Binnaway Pool every day where he swims four laps. His auntie, Sarah Clarke who was a good swimmer when she was younger, teaches him his strokes and about pace. To train for cross-country Marcus runs up the hills at Neilrex, and goes to the gym. He focuses on building up his strength and muscles. His brother Albert sometimes trains with him. When Marcus was younger, and in Primary School, big brother Albert would run with him in his cross-country events as his guide – Marcus says he is now too fast for Albert to run with him like this. Marcus says he wants to keep competing in all three sports: swimming, cross-country and athletics. His ambition is to compete in athletics in the Para Olympics. He says: “I want to try and get gold – real gold.” Marcus’ ambition stems from when he saw a real medal in Tamworth when he was ten. Marcus receives support from Binnaway Central School, Binnaway Central School P&C Association, the community and his family. Marcus acknowledges and wants to thank his family: mum Judy, brothers Albert and Kevin (who showed him how to use weights at Gunnedah gym) and his auntie Sarah. Marcus also thanks Mr Black from Binnaway Central School for helping him with entries to go to Nationals. When he leaves school Marcus wishes to work in the mines in Gunnedah with big brother Kevin. Marcus hopes to work underground and earn good money. Marcus says he has always enjoyed swimming and running from an early age but he had never thought of going to Nationals. He was surprised the first time he went to Nationals. He has made friends at the different championships and enjoys meeting up with them. Marcus’ ambition for 2020 is to be the 1500 metre National Champion in 2020 – an ambition that is as modest and unassuming as Marcus is himself.

Work Placement & Work Experience

From the 1st December to the 6th December I went to Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo for my work placement. I worked at the Zoofari Lodge restaurant which caters for visitors that are staying at the zoo as well as conference groups. Some of the duties which I carried out include; preparing breakfasts, roasted vegetable trays, making batters for crocodile fillets, preparing cheese and corn damper rolls, making buffalo meatballs, cleaning up dishes and preparation areas. The work was much more hands on than I had thought. I was thinking that I would mostly be doing the cleaning but in reality I was happy to be doing lots of the food preparation and cooking. Usually when I arrived at work at 12.30pm I would prepare roast vegetable trays which were used for dinner service. Then I would prepare buffalo meatballs, fried crocodile fillets and damper rolls for dinner service and also for breakfast the next day. I did a lot of cleaning of the food preparation areas after each dish. At the end of my shift I would clean out the deep fryer, wash the dishes and mop the floors, it was a long day! Some of the skills that I’ve learned at Binnaway Central School include knife skills and cleaning up. These skills enabled me to cut the vegetables for roasting quickly and efficiently. Having a knowledge of kitchen cleaning routines also helped me maintain a clean work space. One of the skills I had to learn while in the restaurant was to operate the commercial dish washer and also to batter foods properly. Once I had learned these skills I was able to keep the kitchen clean and help out with the deep fried food. Parts of the job that I enjoyed the most was working with very friendly and easy going kitchen staff. Working with “Nana” (the head chef) was great and I really appreciated her help and guidance. I also appreciated the respect she showed me. I also enjoyed working in a very busy environment where the shift seemed to go very quickly. The only part of the job which I didn’t enjoy was the change in my daily routine. At home I usually go to bed early. Thank you to Ms Wilson for organising and taking us, and Graeme for his support. Brendan Peters Work experience at Maquarie Regional Library This past week I did work experience at the Maquarie Regional Library. There was more work than I anticipated. I had to cover books, laminate posters and carry boxes of books and much more. A typical day at the library would be: get there at 9am, tidy the library, cover some books, stack some shelves and leave work at 5pm. Working at the library meant a lot of carrying of books and just working with books in general. I found working at the library kind of boring and I don’t really see myself working at one later in life. Tom Baillie

Work experience at Priceline

I did work experience at Priceline pharmacy in Dubbo. At Priceline I did unders and wrote tickets and redid shelves. I liked working there. The thing I liked the most was doing the tickets because it was the easiest, and the thing I disliked the most was the unders because you always have to be on your knees. A typical day was go to work at 9 then do unders and unpack stock and clean some shelves and finish at 5pm. Morgan McCaw Name of Place Worked at: Binnaway Central School – General Assistant (GA) Typical Work: Maintenance of school grounds, gardens and buildings Duties carried out: Plant propagation, hedge trimming, removal and replacement of hand towel holders, clean out supply store, maintenance of sprinkler system, weeded and mulched gardens, inflated sports balls, changed school sign. Before I started the position I imagined myself mowing the playground on the ride-on but I wasn’t allowed to use it for safety reasons. A typical day as the GA starts at 8am by putting the flags up at the children’s crossing then turning on the sprinklers to water gardens. The next step is to check the GA book in the office to see if there are any maintenance jobs that have been identified such as flickering light globes or any problems with doors. If there are no other jobs in need of doing then gardening jobs can be done such as mowing the grounds or weeding gardens. The skills I already had that were used are using branch loppers, using a shovel and good work ethic. Some things I learned that I didn’t know before are trimming hedges to shape, drilling holes in brick walls, attaching something to a brick wall using masonry plugs and growing plants from cuttings. I really enjoyed being outdoors working and I found working with plants to be interesting. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I was allowed to use the ride-on and other power equipment. I’m not sure if I would like to do a job like this after I leave school because there are other things I would like to try first to see how much I like them such as working in the mines or some form of driving job like a courier. I learned that I am best suited to an outdoor job. I would like to thank Shane and Ron for looking after me and teaching me a few things over the week. Dylan Peters

My Trip To Perth

by Marcus Nolan 10/12/19

I went to the Australian Athletics Championships in Perth. I flew with the NSW team on the plane to Perth. When I was up there I was watching the

movies. They gave the NSW team food and drink. I had curried chicken and it was the best

food I've ever had.

My two events were on Friday night the 6th December. I went ok. I got a silver and bronze

medal. In the long jump I jumped 4.98m.

That is my personal best. I got the silver medal. I got a bronze medal for the 800 metres.

I liked watching other athletes before my running came up. Mum and Aunty Sara came

to watch me. They felt proud.

I thought Perth was a nice city. Mum and Aunty Sara picked me up on Saturday morning.

They took me to inside skydiving. The wind pushed me up and it felt nice and cool. After

we finished skydiving we went to ten pin bowling. Then we did some shopping.

On the flight back I was watching the clouds and fell asleep. When I woke up and opened

the window it was dark as. I saw all the Sydney city lights.
