Welcome to Mines-Nantes – Graduate School of Engineering – France.
Mines-Nantes is a “Grande Ecole” a public institution, in a Group of Graduate Schools of Engineering and Management “Institut Mines-Télécom”, representing the elite of the higher education system in France. Graduates from the Grandes Ecoles are responsible for technological achievements that have made France one of the major industrial countries of the world.
Mines-Nantes has a small intake with a highly selective admission procedure. Close links have been established with industries. Such cooperation involves the participation of industrialists in teaching, in projects, in internships: which are a required for all the students.
You will be trained for tomorrow and beyond, immediately operational, but also able to continue deve-loping, to extend your areas of responsibility. We offer, in addition to scientific and technical courses, a strong emphasis on management skills.
This is an institution open to the world, with 60 partners across all five continents; we run exchanges for students, research students and lecturers, and you will live and study in an international campus.
Our teaching and learning style will encourage you to take up research; we have dynamic research facilities, highly regarded in their fields. We have extensive human and material resources, our origi-nal teaching and learning structure is actively reviewed and enriched by the results.
Ranking among the top 15% of Graduate Schools of engineering in the nation, the Mines-Nantes offers a full range of expertise in environmental, energy engineering, nuclear engineering, computer science and industrial systems engineering.

Mines-Nantes also offers discount on the tuition fees to MSc students met during education fairs abroad, and to MSc students with excellent application file. Mines-Nantes has developed partnerships with many universities worldwide: Double-Degree agreements (DD), Credit transfer possibilities and scientific research cooperation.
Accomodation in campus
Students admitted into our institute can get an individual room in our student’s residence on the campus. This residence is called in French «Maison Des Elèves» or MDE. We recommend this solution; the rooms are convenient, furnished and cheap.
1-person studios (studette), 18 m2 and furnished with : • Bathroom with shower, toilet and washbasin • Kitchenette with electric stove, fridge, sink,
electrical outlets• Bedroom with single bed, a (very) large desk, chair,
bedside table, shelves, wardrobe, table, stool, network connection
A few couple rooms are also available (T1 bis). The standard size is 30 m2, including a living room and a separate bedroom.
facIlITIEsThere is a LAN network in all the flats of the “Maison des Elèves”. This LAN includes a permanent network connection through a firewall.Each flat has a telephone line but it is necessary to take a line rental. If you plan to bring a telephone with you, make sure it is adapted to French standards.The “Maison des Eleves” also puts at the students’ disposal 4 washing machines, 4 tumble dryers and 2 bicycle sheds.

Student Facilities
scHool lIbRaRy (cDI)The library subscribes to more than 80 academic journals, newspapers, specialized magazines. The library holds more than 13,000 “paper” books, as well as some e-books ; theses, congress proceedings, research reports, multimedia documents, dictionaries and reference books, most of them in French but many in English.
The resources cover the school’s main fields of teaching and research:• Computer science• Physics • Subatomic physics and associated technologies• Environmental and Energy Engineering• Automatic Control, Logistics, Production Engineering• Mathematics• Social sciences, Management• Etc…
Students can borrow 4 books for 14 days, 3 periodicals and 1 DVD for 7 days.
The KOHA online library catalogue, online databases and electronic resources are also available and will help you with your research work.

coMPuTER facIlITIEsThe campus and the student’s residence are very well equipped computer-wise Mines-Nantes has placed at the students’ disposal six rooms with PC computers (Unix and Windows). You can also use the wireless access of the school from the student’s residence.
cafETERIa aND REsTauRaNTA cafeteria is at your disposal in the main building of the school. You can relax and have a coffee or a drink with your friends during breaks, and also buy yourself a snack or a sandwich for lunch.
The restaurant offers a wide range of international dishes. It is located between the main building and the MDE. Most of the students have lunch there because it is convenient and cheap: about 3 euros for one complete meal including starter, main dish and dessert. It is also possible for students to choose a vegan, vegetarian or ecocitizen food option (products from sustainable agriculture and fair trade).
facIlITIEs foR DIsablED sTuDENTsThe school building:The school building is equipped with some special facilities for disabled students:an access ramp at the entrance of the main building, automatic doors, adapted elevator which enables disabled students to have access to the classrooms.
The student’s residence:The school residence provides four rooms which conform with the housing regulations for disabled people: two single rooms “Studettes” (18 m2) and two double rooms for couples “T1bis” (30 m2) are available. They are situated on the ground floor. The doors and showers are larger and the flats are equipped with an access handrail as well as handholds.
Disabled students have also a reserved car parking space at the entrance of the residence.
sPoRTs facIlITIEsOur school provides all students with outstanding opportunities to practice lots of sports (athletics, badminton, dancing, football, working out, handball, rugby, tennis…).
Mines-Nantes has a well-equipped sports centre at your disposal:• The gymnasium which offers you the chance to try
out badminton (9 pitches), tennis (1 pitch), table tennis (8 tables), volleyball (3 pitches), basket ball (2 pitches), hand ball (1 pitch) and indoor football (1 pitch).
• A bodybuilding and cardiovascular exercise room with 32 training machines
• A tatami for martial arts and gymnastics• 1 outdoor football and rugby pitch • 4 outdoor tennis courts
All these facilities are situated in the campus. You can either train, compete or choose to do sports in your free time. The different sports activities and the procedures to enrol will be explained to you in full detail during the Orientation Days.
The footpath along the “Erdre” river is an ideal setting for jogging. Make the most of this opportunity!

The “Welcome company”
This team of students is in charge of welcoming new foreign students and helping them integrate by organising events all year long: international dinners and parties, sport competitions, conversation groups, etc.
These events are great opportunities to meet new friends, to be involved in the local cultural life, to share your own culture, and to improve your French language skills!

other associations and clubs
Since they are trained to elaborate projects, students are strongly encouraged to organise and take part in leisure activities, sporting events, business ventures and to support public initiatives.
Therefore there are numerous associations at Mines-Nantes set up and run by students.
The bDE (Bureau Des Elèves/Students’ Union) is an association run by students, and dealing with after-school activities. For instance it helps student teams find sponsors for their projects, or provide logistic support for some events. http://www.bde-emn.fr
Moreover the BDE supports all kinds of clubs at the students’ request:
The “association sportive” (AS/The sports club) This association edits the school’s sports magazine, and organises sporting events and competitions with other schools, etc.
“MiND” - This association constitutes the students’ own company. It is run by ten students from Mines-Nantes and recruits volunteers to carry out projects requested by business companies. These projects are quite varied, ranging from the creation of web sites and databases to translations, company visits… As a matter of fact MiND provides good opportunities for students eager for professional experience. And there are many more clubs for those interested in Circus acrobatics, Drama, Music, Art, Robotics, Photography, Cooking…etc. Foreign students are welcome to join all these associations and clubs!

› What is the ranking of the Mines-Nantes?Mines-Nantes belongs to the “Mines-Telecom” Institute which is the biggest group for Engineering studies and research in France. France is known as a major industrial country and the French “Grandes Ecoles” (Graduate School of Engineering) are famous for the top level quality of education. Mines-Nantes is ranked in the top 10% of the graduate engineering schools.
› should I speak french to study at Mines-Nantes?
Mines-Nantes provides MSc entirely taught in English. There is no pre-requisite in French language to study into those programs. Of course, we recommend students to learn the basics of French before leaving their country in order to feel more comfortable while arriving in France. Mines-Nantes offers intensive French language and culture classes at the beginning of each MS semester, and also French language classes on a weekly basis during the whole MSc program.
Please note that Mines-Nantes also provides a French Summer School for the students who would like to learn French during July and August.
› Does Mines-Nantes offer scholarships?Scholarships are sometimes offered but it depends on your curriculum, the country and university of origin. In
any case we advise you contact the French Embassy in your country and the Government of your country of origin in order to check whether scholarships are available.
› How many students study at Mines-Nantes?There are about 1000 students studying at Mines-Nantes. This is the particularity of French “Grande Ecoles”: only the best students are selected to study in this very privileged Engineering institute. We guarantee the quality of education thanks to students in small-size group and a large number of Professors. The ratio student/Professor is around 9. This is one of the world lowest ratio!
› How many international students are there at Mines-Nantes?
International students represent about 33% of Mines-Nantes students. They come from our university partners, but also from many different countries. Students and Professors come from over 40 different countries ! Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Ghana, Hungary, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Thailand, etc.

Student Visa
Non-European students need to apply for a visa to study in France.
The Student’s visa is a long-stay visa and allow students to stay on the French territory during one year and to travel in the Schengen Area without any additional visa. After the first year, students continuing their studies at Mines-Nantes have to apply for a residence permit (in French: carte de séjour). Our international service helps students with this administrative process.
a Please register at campusfrance in your country several months before leaving your country in order to apply for student visa. Campusfrance will provide you with information about higher education in France and will be the starting point for the visa process.
For those who have no Campusfrance office in their country, please contact directly the French Embassy or Consulate in your country.
We will also contact the relevant Campusfrance office/Embassy in your country to confirm your admission into one of our programs.

you are strongly recommended to keep copies of all your official documents, to provide at least some evidence of your identity if the originals are lost or stolen.
We also recommend to prepare some euros in cash for the first expenses you will have to do when you arrive to france/Nantes (Eg: taxi, food, deposit, etc). you can also withdraw euros from aTM machines at Paris airport.

ExTENsIoN of youR sTay IN fRaNcEAfter their studies at Mines-Nantes, students can apply for a temporary residence permit, called “APS” (in French: Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour). This permit allow students to stay 6 extra months in France in order to find a job. Students have to apply for APS at least 4 months before the student permit expires, at the “Prefecture” of the city they live.
Once employment has been found, the permit becomes a full-time work permit, as long as the type of employment and the salary correspond to the degree obtained.

We recommend the students to get to Mines-Nantes 2 to 3 days before the beginning of the program and during the working hours (Monday to Friday- from 9 am to 4 pm) to get the keys of your room easily.
We will take care of the administrative issues for all the international students during the Welcome week (Orientation Days).
coMINg To NaNTEs by PlaNEIf you come from outside Europe, you will probably have to transit through Paris.
There are 2 airports in Paris: Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly. Here is the link of Paris airports website, information in English: http://www.aeroportsdeparis.fr/ADP/en-GB/Passagers/home
You can take a plane to Nantes from these 2 airports, the flight takes about 1 hour.
Luggage weight : Don’t forget to check with the airline how heavy you are entitled to take with you. Most of the companies just allow 20 kg per person, then you have to pay for each extra kilo.
coMINg To NaNTEs by TRaIN
There is a train station just under Paris CDG airport. After landing at CDG airport, you just have to follow the direction “TGV” (high speed train). Be careful, the airport is huge, you could need up to 45 minutes to walk from your arrival gate to the TGV train station. The Paris CDG-Nantes journey takes about 3 hours.
fINDINg youR Way To THE caMPus fRoM NaNTEs aIRPoRT • you can take one of the taxis which are waiting
outside the airport, this is the easiest solution. It takes half an hour to one hour, depending on the traffic. The rate should be between 40 and 70 e.
• you can take the bus: first the airport shuttle to the city Center (stop at “Commerce”). Then you walk about 200 metres to reach the Chronobus station at “Place du Cirque”. Finally you take Chrononbus C6 from this station to “Chantrerie” (which is the final stop of C6). The whole journey takes about 1 hour and a half, but the price shouldn’t exceed 10 €.
fINDINg youR Way To THE caMPus fRoM THE TRaIN sTaTIoN
• you can take a taxi from Nantes train station, North exit. The ride takes about 20 minutes to Mines-Nantes and the price should be around 25 e.
To check the train schedule and book a ticket: http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ (translated in many languages). Please note that tickets bought online and in advance are cheaper but they are non-refundable most of the time.
In case you plan to spend a few days in Paris before coming to Nantes, you can take the train from Paris city center, at Paris Montparnasse train station. The journey takes only 2 hours to Nantes.

• you can take the Tram line 1 from the train station North exit, towards “Beaujoire” and stop at “Beaujoire”. Finally, take bus 75 or Chronobus C6 and stop at “Chantrerie”. It takes about 1 hour, but you only have to buy one ticket (2 e maximum) valid for tramway and bus.
If you arrive at Nantes airport or train station between Monday and friday, 8 a.m to 4 p.m, we can go and pick you up there if you need. Please inform us of your arrival day and time, flight or coach number at least 5 days in advance so we can arrange a car from the school. This service is free but is only available for students who have booked a room in the campus and only during the working hours.
If you come to Mines-Nantes campus by yourself, the first building on the right is the main building. You can reach the MDE easily, by going down the road for about 400 metres.

The Orientation days at Mines-nantes is a time dedicated to administrative issues, meetings with the Professors, presentations, etc, aiming at helping new students to integrate in their new living and study environment. Here are a few information about the Orientation Days program.

1. oPENINg a baNK accouNT IN fRaNcEWe recommend the international students to open a bank account in France. It will be more convenient for your everyday life here. If you don’t have a bank account valid in France, representatives of banks will come to the Campus during the Orientation Days to help you open a French bank account. To open a bank account, you need to provide:• A copy of your passport• A copy of your visa• A certificate of registration at the Ecole des Mines
de Nantes (supplied by Mines-Nantes)• A copy of your accommodation certificate (supplied
by the MDE if you have a room in the campus).
Your bank account will be opened 8 days after you provide the necessary documents.
2. REgIsTERINg foR HousEHolD INsuRaNcE You have to subscribe an insurance policy for your room to cover accidental damages caused by the tenant or by natural disasters: flooding, storms or earthquakes. The representatives from the bank mentioned above will provide you with insurance.

We organise a specific appointment with the head of the IT Department during the Orientation Days in order to open your computer account. You will be connected after a couple of days. This service is completely free. Individual computers are not supplied to students; you should bring your own if possible.

5. gETTINg youR sTuDENT caRD This card gives you access to the student restaurant, the school, the gymnasium and the library of Mines-Nantes.
You will use it for payments at the cafeteria and the restaurant on the campus. You can credit this card at the cafeteria to pay for your meals.
The student card also has a MoNEo payment system. you can use it for some daily life duties.

6. INITIaTINg THE ofII PRocEss Students from outside the European Union who come with a 1 year student visa, will have to bring the ofII form received from the french embassy at the same time as visa. Don’t forget this form in your home country! At your arrival in France, we will help you to send it back to the OFII with the copies of your
passport, visa and the entry stamp. Then, you will be scheduled a medical visit within 3 months, obligatory for all the students with visa. You will have to buy a 58 e fiscal stamp.
If your studies are longer than 1 year, you will have to apply for a residence permit (carte de séjour) before the one year visa expires.

7. PayINg THE DEPosIT Mines-Nantes will ask students who have a room at the MDE to pay a deposit called “caution Masse commune”. The price is equivalent to the price of a room at the MDE. This amount will be used as a guarantee for any damage caused during your period of studies. It will be refunded to you - minus any charge for damages if any - at the end of your studies at Mines-Nantes. The students will have to pay this deposit to Mrs Françoise MAURY in cash or by credit card (3rd floor-office A323- “Frais de scolarité”) during the Orientation Days.

› When should I arrive to Mines-Nantes?We recommend the student to get to Mines-Nantes 2-3 days before the beginning of the program. All the programs start with Orientation days during which you get all the information and assistance needed for administrative issues and to get used to your new study environment.
› Where should I stay if I arrive in the evening/night or during the week end?
If you arrive outside the working hours in the campus, you will not be able to pick up the keys of your room. In that case, you need to book a room in a hotel for the first night at least. You will find addresses of hotels located next to Nantes train station and Nantes airport in the section “Living in Nantes” of this booklet.
› How can I use my electrical appliances at the MDE?
The standard voltage throughout France is 220 Volts and we use a Type C plug. You may need an adapter to plug your appliances in your room. You can bring it from your home country or buy it in any supermarket here.
› Is it obligatory to subscribe to health insurance?All the students under 28 years old in France have to register to the student health insurance, it is compulsory. The students over 28 years old are also highly encouraged to subscribe to a health insurance (in France or in your country). The medical expenses are quite expensive in France, so it’s better to have an insurance.
› When can I travel outside france? (for students with visa)
After your arrival to France, you will have to wait for the medical visit and your appointment at the OFII. The OFII will put a stamp on your visa which will make it valid for one year. After this administrative appointment, you will be entitled to travel outside France. This process is quite long and can take up to 3 months, a period during which you can not leave France.
It’s worth waiting, the student visa you obtain allows you to travel over the 27 countries of the Schengen area without any other additional visa!
› When are the holidays for students?The student’s holidays depend on the program. Basically, students have 2 weeks holidays for Christmas and New Year. There is no break between semester 1 and 2. Usually there is one week holiday for Easter. MSc students have a long break during summer (about 1 month and a half in July and August).
› What happens if I don’t participate to the orientation Days?
The Orientation Days are very important because international students can receive the help needed for most of the administrative formalities. (After this dedicated time, the students have to do these formalities by themselves). It's also the opportunity to integrate into your new study and living environment and to get to know your new classmates.

gEogRaPHyNantes is situated in the Western part of France, on the Loire estuary and is the administrative capital city of the Pays de la Loire region.
The city has a network of rivers, for example the Erdre and the Sèvre nantaise.
Nantes is the 6th biggest city in France (577 000 inhabitants).
It takes 2 hours to go from Nantes to Paris thanks to the TGV (high speed train) and it is 50 km from the Atlantic ocean. In fact you can easily go to the beaches of La Baule and Pornic by car or by train.
clIMaTENantes is characterised by a temperate oceanic climate because of its closeness to the seacoast.
The overall average temperature is 12°C. Winters are usually mild and rainy (on average 5°C). Summers are hot but not in an extreme way (on average 18.5°C).
HIsToRIcal aND culTuRal INHERITaNcEThe city of Nantes is strongly marked by its historical past and has always wished to protect and promote its historical districts.
The castle - the Château des Ducs de Bretagne - is the testimony of five centuries of medieval history. It was built between the 15th and the 18th centuries under King François II and his daughter Anne de Bretagne.
The medieval districts of Decré and Bouffay in the town centre date back to the 15th century.
The cathedral of Nantes was built between the 15th and 19th centuries.
The Passage Pommeray was inaugurated in 1843 and is considered as one of the most beautiful 19th century shopping arcades.
The Quai de la Fosse stands as a testimony to the city’s maritime past.
Daily Life
ShoppingShops are normally open from Monday to Saturday between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Shops are closed on Sundays.
aRouND THE caMPusA backery is located just next to the campus.
Saint-Joseph-de-Porterie is the nearest town where you will find the following facilities: convenience shops, a drugstore, a bakery, a post office, banks, doctors, newsagents, elementary schools. You can walk to this small town, it takes 20 minutes from the Maison Des Elèves or five minutes by bus.
There are also 2 supermarkets (Carrefour and Leclerc) located about 20 minutes by bus from the campus.

There are fourteen markets in Nantes where you will find fresh food products in season. Don’t miss the flower market at Commerce, the flea market of Viarme and the second-hand bookseller market on the Bourse Square either.

You will have your own letterbox at the “Maison Des Elèves” and you will also be able to send official letters for free from the reception desk of Mines-Nantes. These letters concern only your studies or internships. The nearest post office to the campus is located at Saint-Joseph-de-Porterie.
TransportationPublIc TRaNsPoRTs The TAN is the Transport Company of Nantes. The city of Nantes has an excellent network of local buses, chronobus and tramway services. The tramway network of Nantes is the longest in France!
A ticket enables you to travel for up to one hour and to any destination using several lines of bus and tramway. You can also get a monthly ticket or a one year ticket. Ask for details at an “Espace Transport”. One of them is situated in the town centre in the Brancas street, next to “Commerce” (Opening hours: Monday - Saturday: from 7.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m.).
You can also buy tickets from the ticket machines at most tramway stations.
There are fewer buses and tramways on sundays.

Another more original way of travelling in Nantes is with the Navibus… along the rivers! In fact you can travel on the Erdre and from the North to the South of the Loire and discover great views of Nantes. You will have access to the Navibus with your usual transport ticket, and you can even take your bicycle along with you.

Nantes Atlantique Airport is the first airport in the West of France and welcomes on average two million passengers every year.
The airport operates about twenty regular domestic flights and more than thirty regular European flights. European capital cities are therefore only two hours away from Nantes. Some direct flights for North Africa and Canada are also available.
The TAN Air shuttle operates a thirty-minute connection every hour between the city centre, the train station and the airport.

“Bicloo” is adapted to cover short distances. The price is cheap if you don’t exceed half an hour. Don’t use it if you plan to go for a day cycling!
