“...As workers at the libraries on campus, we are all aware of the resources which are so familiar to us. By making a more concerted effort to spread this infomation, students would become more competent with one of the University’s main websites. This could be a great leadership opportunity for the student assistants across campus [libraries]. It is not very often that we as students get the chance to speak in front of a large group. If enacted, student assistants would gain valuable public speaking experience, something that employers are always searching for.”

Madelyn Houde, marine sciences major and winner of the James and Leslie Rutherford Library Student Assistant Scholarship, Fall 2015; Architecture & Fine Arts Library student assistant.

MORE STUDENT VOICESJessica Bergau, a University of Florida zoology and biomechanics major, recently founded a club named Generational Relief in Prosthetics (GRiP). GRiP designs and manufactures 3D printed assistive devices for children and adults throughout the nation with upper limb differences. Marston Science Library librarian Sara Russell Gonzalez is their faculty advisor. Jessica said, “GRiP is able to provide all devices free of cost thanks to a $2,000 grant from the Libraries.”

GRiP has teamed up with Hands To Love (H2L), a once a year camp at Camp Crystal Lake near Gainesville, to fit teenagers with 3D printed prosthetic devices, and to put on a 3D printing workshop for the teens at the Fall Teen Retreat.

GRiP members Jessica Bergau, right, and occupational therapy majors Emma Heaton and Hannah Taylor, manufac-ture 3D printed assistive devices in the 3D printing lab.

“I would like to point out the sociocultural aspects and implications of having access to such an awesome library system. The Libraries seamlessly allow access to

comprehensive online and live resources for research, as well as provide a safe and comfortable place to explore and continue to redefine my interersts as an academic.”

Tilman Monsanto, anthropology major

FALL 2015 Chapter One 3

By Rebecca Jefferson Head, Isser and Rae Price Library of Judaica A total of $477,056 has been raised as part of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Challenge Grant to build a $2 million endowment. Once built, the Jewish Heritage Endowment will produce an annual income to acquire and digitize hidden and endangered Jewish materials from Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean. The endowment will fund research projects related to this area and it will provide funds for ongoing public outreach and engagement.

Thanks to support from the University President, the Libraries’ NEH Challenge Grant project team has already begun this work. The Jewish Diaspora Collection (JDoC) website is now in place at http://ufdc.ufl.edu/judaica. A project to add 97 digital issues of rare Jewish Latin American newspapers is underway, and includes many issues of Di Presse from the 1920s to the 1950s.

A digital collection of “In My Lifetime” Holocaust prints produced by Gainesville artist, David Crown, will soon be online. In partnership with the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program, audio recordings

with members of the diminished El Salvadoran Jewish community have been transcribed and translated. Three oral history interviews with entrepreneurial Jewish Floridians have begun.

In addition, the Libraries have used the fund to purchase rare books from Latin America. These purchases include a deluxe presentation album from the Argentine Jewish community to the retiring director of the Immigration Authority, Dr. Juan Antonio Alsina (1852-1937). The album contains 1,052 legible autograph signatures of members of the Russian Jewish immigrant community living in Buenos Aires at the turn of the 20th century.

Rabbi B. C. Carillon’s. Refutation of “An Affectionate Address, to the Jews of Jamaica, on the great subject of Christianity...,” published in Jamaica in 1847, has been purchased. Special outreach events, including the musical and spoken word performance, “Composing A Heart and Other Jewish Immigrant Stories,” and the Antiques Roadshow style “Jewish Heritage Days” have resulted

in material donations to the Judaica Library, such as local cookbooks, artist’s books, family papers, memoires and photographs.

We are extremely grateful for the enthusiastic response of the community to this project, and to all the kind donors to the NEH Challenge Grant. We particularly thank Samuel and Charles Price for their major support, Stanley Tate for his generous contribution to the fund, and Judge Harvey Schlessinger and Mrs. Lois Schlessinger of Jacksonville for their four-year pledge and for naming a study alcove in our Judaica Suite in honor of their children and grandchildren.

If you wish to contribute to the Florida/Latin American/Caribbean Jewish Heritage Fund, please contact Gail Burton at (352) 273-2505 or [email protected]. To learn more about the JDoC project, please contact Rebecca Jefferson at (352) 273-2865 or [email protected].

The libraries of the University of Florida form the largest information resource system in the state of Florida and include seven libraries. Six are in the system known as the George A. Smathers Libraries, and one (Legal Information Center) is attached to the law school’s administrative unit. Over the past 100 years, faculty and librarians have built hundreds of specialized collections, now totaling more than six million volumes, printed in practically every written language by publishers throughout the world.

The George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida include specialized collections in science, architecture, art, history, languages, music and health sciences. The collections cover all areas of contemporary knowledge, from agriculture to zoology and from philosophy to history. The libraries serve all of the university’s faculty and students, but each has a special mission to be the primary support of specific colleges and degree programs. The libraries support the very best educational, research and service performance by university faculty and students, using the latest online technology and time-honored methods of collection and preservation.

For more information on giving to the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida contact the Office of Development at (352) 273-2505.

The 1953 mural painted by artist and UF professor Hollis Holbrook on the north wall of the historic Smathers Library Grand Reading Room recently underwent conservation treatment that removed 60 years of grime. Painted in egg tempera, “History of Learning in Florida,” was designed specifically for the space and is in harmony with its surroundings. This conservation will allow the mural to last for future generations of visitors.

Page 7: STUDENT VOICES - George A. Smathers Libraries · information resource system in the state of Florida and include seven libraries. Six are in the system known as the George A. Smathers

Thank you for your support of the George A. Smathers Libraries. Students, faculty and other library users benefit directly from your gift to the Libraries. Gifts like yours enable us to purchase new technologies that students in the 21st century rely on for their studies. These include digital academic journals, books and primary resources, online educational videos and large monitors in group study rooms for collaborative projects.

In addition, our subject specialists are able to purchase a wide variety of research materials including science books, classic literature, Judaica books and rare historical children’s books. They collect and transcribe historically valuable oral histories, and digitize important material from our collections to be made available online.

The University of Florida Libraries are changing. Two million of our over six million books have already moved to climate controlled auxiliary and interim library facilities five miles away. This allows us to transform library spaces, while retaining valuable, but relatively low use, books and journals. With fewer books in the buildings, are we still a library?

The answer is YES because libraries are more than books. They are about collecting, preserving and providing access to information in whatever form it may take. In the past, we did this by using primarily print collections, card catalogs, and of course everyone’s favorite: microfilm and microfiche. Now everyone can connect to the online catalog and many databases, electronic journals and e-books. More people come to the library, but they come to study, collaborate, create, get help and be inspired – and some continue to check out books!

So we are reimagining library spaces and services. There will still be skilled librarians and library staff to help students, faculty and other users find what they need. Our users will still have access to everything they do now – and more. There is already and will continue to be more technology: 3D scanners and printers, sophisticated software, printers and plotters, ipads and cameras; studios for digital projects and mobile application development; and more power outlets for the technology that travels everywhere with the students. Our students will have more study spaces and more sunshine as we relocate books and remove shelving. We are gradually transforming

libraries built in the 60s, 70s and 80s into 21st century research libraries.

Libraries evolve. We anticipate changes in technology, research and teaching, and more importantly we anticipate students’ changing needs. We still will be libraries, but research libraries of the future.

You can help your libraries continue to fulfill the needs of the students, faculty, staff and researchers at the University of Florida. Become a Friend or renew your membership today. You can use the form on page 11 or log on to our website (http://cms.uflib.ufl.edu/giving) to give online or discover the many ways in which you can support the Smathers Libraries. Thank you for your past support. We look forward to your continued support in the coming year.

As always, I invite you to visit the Libraries and please contact me at (352) 273-2505 or [email protected] if you would like to schedule a tour.
